Amazed

Chapter 5

Rachel put the call on speaker.

Detective Ortiz motioned for everyone to stay quiet.

“I don’t have what you want,” Rachel said.

“You’re holding it.”

Rachel looked at the plastic bracelet still wrapped in an evidence sleeve.

“Why does this matter?”

“Because Daniel wrote something on it.”

Rachel turned the bracelet over.

Room 614 was written in blue ink.

Nothing else.

“That’s only his room number.”

“Look closer.”

Rachel held it beneath the hallway light.

Inside the loop, barely visible, were six tiny numbers.

Claire continued.

“Daniel hid the password before he lost consciousness.”

“The password to what?”

“You don’t need to know.”

“Four million dollars?”

Claire went silent.

Naomi gave Rachel a sharp nod.

Rachel continued.

“Daniel found the transfers. That’s why you poisoned him.”

“I didn’t poison anyone.”

“You kept him unconscious.”

“He was supposed to sign the documents and walk away.”

“What documents?”

“The ones that gave us what was ours.”

“Us?”

Claire’s voice hardened.

“Bring the bracelet to the lake house. One hour. No police.”

“That drive takes two hours.”

“Then you should hurry.”

The line went dead.

Ortiz immediately ordered units toward the property.

Rachel took Mia downstairs.

Dana was waiting.

This time, Mia refused to let go of Rachel.

Ortiz confronted Judith in the foyer.

“You knew where Daniel was.”

“I saw a video. That proves nothing.”

“You locked a four-year-old child in a room.”

“She was upset.”

“You are under arrest for child endangerment and obstruction.”

Judith’s composure shattered.

“You cannot arrest me in my own house!”

Ortiz read her rights.

Judith looked at Rachel.

“You have destroyed this family.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“No. I opened a locked door.”

Judith was led outside.

Dana agreed Mia could remain with Rachel while officers investigated.

Naomi drove.

Rachel sat in the passenger seat, studying the bracelet.

The six numbers were 110497.

“Daniel’s birthday?” Naomi asked.

“No. Claire’s.”

“Why would he use her birthday as a password?”

“Because she would never expect it.”

Naomi called Anna.

“Try the numbers on Daniel’s encrypted folder.”

They waited.

A minute later, Anna called back.

“It worked.”

“What’s inside?” Rachel asked.

“Audio recordings. Financial files. Scans of signed checks.”

“Send everything to Naomi and Detective Ortiz.”

“There’s also a video.”

“What video?”

“It’s Daniel. He recorded it the day he disappeared.”

Rachel’s chest tightened.

“Play it.”

Daniel’s voice came through the car speakers.

“If Rachel is watching this, then I failed to tell her the truth in time.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I discovered that my mother, my sister, and Grant Holloway have been stealing from the Mercer trust for at least six years. The money was supposed to support employee pensions and the children’s hospital foundation.”

Naomi’s grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“I confronted Grant. He told me the signatures were mine. They weren’t.”

Daniel paused in the recording.

“I should have gone to the police immediately. I didn’t, because Claire begged me to protect Mom. Claire said Mom started taking money after Dad died and planned to repay it. I wanted to believe her.”

Rachel whispered, “Daniel.”

“I moved the original records somewhere safe. Then Grant threatened Rachel and Mia. He showed me photographs of them leaving preschool and the grocery store. I agreed to meet him at the lake house.”

The recording crackled.

“If something happens to me, Grant is responsible. But Claire knows everything. She has always known.”

The video ended.

Rachel opened her eyes.

“Daniel knew they were following us.”

“And he didn’t tell you,” Naomi said gently.

“He tried to protect us by walking into their trap alone.”

Naomi did not answer.

They reached a roadblock ten miles from the lake house.

Ortiz met them there.

“Stay in the car.”

“Claire expects me.”

“She expects the bracelet.”

“If she sees police first, she may hurt Daniel.”

Ortiz looked toward the trees.

“We have officers approaching from the north.”

Rachel held out her hand.

“Give me ten minutes.”

“No.”

“Daniel may not have ten minutes.”

Naomi spoke quietly.

“Let her approach. Keep her wired.”

Ortiz swore under his breath.

Then he attached a small transmitter beneath Rachel’s collar.

“If you see a weapon, you get down. If I say leave, you leave.”

Rachel walked the final half mile alone.

The lake house appeared beyond the trees.

Its windows were dark.

Claire opened the front door.

“Where is Mia?”

“Safe.”

“The bracelet.”

“Daniel first.”

Claire stepped aside.

Rachel entered.

Grant stood near the fireplace.

Daniel lay on the narrow bed from the camera feed.

A portable monitor showed a weak but steady heartbeat.

His eyelids moved.

Rachel ran to him.

Grant blocked her.

“The bracelet.”

Rachel held it up.

“Tell me why you need the password.”

Grant smiled.

“Daniel copied files into an account that automatically sends them to federal investigators if he dies. The password can stop the transfer.”

Naomi already had the files.

Grant didn’t know.

“Then wake him and make him do it.”

“We tried.”

Claire looked away.

Rachel’s anger exploded.

“How long were you planning to keep your own brother unconscious?”

“He wasn’t supposed to collapse,” Claire snapped. “He fought Grant. He hit his head.”

Rachel looked at the bruise on Daniel’s forehead.

“You let everyone believe I poisoned him.”

“You were convenient.”

The cruelty of the answer stunned her.

Claire reached for the bracelet.

Rachel pulled it back.

“You put Mia in that pit because she found this.”

“She walked into the shed while I was moving Daniel’s things.”

“So you buried her?”

“It was shallow.”

“She is four!”

“I needed ten minutes to clear the shed.”

Rachel wanted to strike her.

Instead, she focused on Daniel.

His fingers moved.

Just once.

Grant stepped closer.

“Enough. Give me the bracelet.”

Rachel looked directly at him.

“You forged the divorce papers.”

“Daniel needed a reason to disappear.”

“And when he died, everyone would blame me.”

“That was the plan.”

Claire stared at Grant.

“You said Daniel wasn’t going to die.”

Grant’s face changed.

Rachel saw it.

So did Claire.

“You told me we would make him sign,” Claire said.

“He is a liability.”

“He’s my brother.”

“He recorded us.”

Claire stepped between Grant and the bed.

“No.”

Grant reached inside his jacket.

Rachel dropped.

The front windows shattered inward as officers fired nonlethal rounds through the glass.

Grant spun toward the noise.

Claire grabbed his arm.

A gun fell onto the rug.

Rachel lunged for Daniel and pulled the bed away.

Officers flooded the room.

Grant was forced to the floor.

Claire stood frozen.

Ortiz entered behind the tactical team.

“Claire Mercer, put your hands where I can see them.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then at Rachel.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn’t want this.”

Rachel knelt beside Daniel.

“You put my child in a pit.”

Claire slowly lifted her hands.

Paramedics rushed to the bed.

Dr. Cole had accompanied the team.

He checked Daniel’s breathing and pupils.

“Daniel,” Rachel whispered. “I’m here.”

His eyes opened a fraction.

His lips moved.

Rachel leaned close.

“The pit,” he breathed.

“What about it?”

“Underneath.”

His eyes closed again.

Rachel turned to Claire.

“What is under the pit?”

Claire’s face went white.

Grant lifted his head from the floor.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Rachel understood.

The financial files were not the only evidence Daniel had hidden.

Something was buried beneath the place where Claire had left Mia.

And whatever it was frightened all of them more than prison.
