Amazed

Chapter 7

The blinking dot stopped at a private airfield south of Nashville.

State police surrounded the runway.

Federal agents blocked the highway.

A helicopter was already preparing to leave.

Officers ordered the pilot to shut down the engine.

The door opened.

Only the pilot was inside.

Travis had attached the tracker to his flight bag.

“He knew Mason took the phone,” Elena said.

“He wanted us here,” I replied.

The real escape was happening somewhere else.

Pike finally agreed to talk.

He demanded protection for himself and his family.

Hannah Reed refused to promise immunity.

“You helped terrorize a mother and child,” she told him. “You don’t walk away.”

Pike lowered his head.

“Then Travis will disappear.”

“He already has.”

“No. He needs money.”

Federal agents froze every account connected to Mercer Holdings.

Pike revealed a private reserve hidden through construction contracts.

Nearly two million dollars in cash was stored inside an old model home near Franklin.

A tactical team raided it.

The money was gone.

But they found food, false identification, and a photograph of Donna.

My mother was no longer at the safe house.

She had left thirty minutes earlier.

Rachel stared at her empty bedroom.

“She said she needed air.”

Two officers had been at the front entrance.

Neither saw her leave.

A rear camera showed Donna climbing over the garden fence and entering a sedan.

She was not forced.

She carried a suitcase.

Rachel’s face hardened.

“She went to Travis.”

I wanted to deny it.

Then Elena played a recovered voicemail from Donna’s prepaid phone.

Travis had called her before Mason’s abduction.

He told her Rachel would lose custody because of the investigation.

He promised to help Donna take Mason somewhere safe.

Donna had answered, “I’ll do whatever it takes.”

Rachel walked away.

Mason sat at the kitchen table, holding Daniel’s challenge coin.

“Grandma thinks Mom is bad,” he whispered.

“No,” I said. “Grandma is confused.”

“She always gets confused when Travis talks.”

There was no gentle way to disagree.

Rachel returned with Donna’s suitcase from the closet.

It looked full.

But when she opened it, we found only towels.

Donna had carried an empty suitcase to make the officers believe she planned to leave town.

She had gone willingly.

That did not mean she understood Travis’s real plan.

Mason pointed to one of the towels.

A red thread clung to it.

“Grandma knows the code too.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No. She watched Ben teach it to you, but she never remembered.”

“Maybe she remembered this time.”

Donna’s sedan was found near an interstate rest stop.

A witness saw her enter a black truck.

The truck traveled south.

Police issued an alert.

Two hours later, Donna called Rachel.

“Please don’t be angry.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m helping fix this.”

“Is Travis with you?”

“No.”

The hesitation exposed the lie.

Rachel put the call on speaker.

“Mom, listen carefully. Travis kidnapped Mason.”

“He said Pike did that.”

“Travis carried him out.”

“He said he rescued him from Pike.”

Mason looked at the phone.

“Grandma, he tied me to a chair.”

Donna began crying.

Travis’s voice sounded in the background.

“He’s confused.”

Mason stood.

“I’m not confused!”

The line went silent.

“Travis,” I said, “you’re surrounded by people who know the truth.”

“You keep saying that, Emily. Yet your mother came to me.”

“You lied to her.”

“I told her Rachel is unstable. She already believed that.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Travis continued.

“Donna understands Mason needs a stronger family.”

“You are not his family,” Rachel said.

“I was there when Ben wasn’t.”

“Ben was dead because of you.”

Travis laughed softly.

“You should ask your mother what Ben planned to do before he died.”

Donna whispered, “What does he mean?”

“Tell them,” Travis said.

Silence followed.

Then Donna spoke.

“Ben was going to leave Rachel.”

My sister stopped breathing.

“No.”

“He came to my house the week before the accident. He said he wanted you and Mason out of Nashville.”

“That isn’t leaving me.”

“I thought he meant without him.”

Travis seized the misunderstanding immediately.

“He was running from his crimes.”

“He was trying to protect us,” Rachel said.

“You don’t know that.”

“I read his letter.”

Travis became silent.

That was the moment he learned we had found the real evidence.

His voice lost its confidence.

“What letter?”

“The one you never found.”

Donna asked where it was.

Rachel ignored her.

“Mom, tell us where you are.”

“I can’t.”

“Travis is going to hurt you.”

“He needs my help.”

“He needs a hostage.”

Donna began sobbing.

The call ended.

Technicians traced it to a rural cell tower near Columbia.

Elena coordinated with local officers.

The search area covered nearly forty square miles.

Pike identified three properties previously owned by Mercer Holdings.

One was an abandoned farmhouse.

One was an equipment warehouse.

The third was a cabin beside an old quarry.

We divided resources.

I went with Elena to the farmhouse.

Rachel and Mason remained under federal protection.

This time, Rachel agreed.

She knelt in front of Mason before I left.

“No matter what happens, you stay with Agent Shaw.”

“What if Grandma needs me?”

“The adults will help Grandma.”

“What if they don’t understand the knots?”

Rachel pressed her forehead against his.

“Then we will teach them.”

The farmhouse was empty.

Fresh tire marks circled the barn.

Inside, we found Donna’s scarf.

A strip of red thread had been tied around it.

Three knots.

Mason’s code.

Building Three.

But there were no separate buildings on the property.

Elena called the warehouse team.

Their location had three structures.

Officers entered the third building.

It was empty except for a chair and a camera.

A recorded video began playing when they opened the door.

Donna appeared on the screen.

She read a statement accusing Rachel of neglect.

She claimed I had coached Mason to lie.

Her voice shook through every sentence.

Travis stood behind the camera.

At the end, Donna looked directly into the lens.

“Rachel, I did this because I love Mason.”

Then she raised one hand to wipe her tears.

A red thread was wrapped around her wrist.

It contained two knots.

“Building Two,” I said.

The warehouse team moved immediately.

The second building contained office space above a loading bay.

They found Donna locked inside a supply room.

Travis was gone.

Donna was physically unharmed.

But when Rachel arrived at the hospital, she refused to enter our mother’s room.

“She chose him.”

“She was manipulated,” I said.

“So was I.”

Rachel faced me.

“You didn’t forgive me quickly.”

Her words cut deep.

“You’re right.”

“I spent years hearing that I should have known better. Now Mom makes the same choice, and suddenly she’s only confused.”

“I was wrong to blame you.”

“That doesn’t erase it.”

“No.”

Rachel looked through the window.

Donna lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.

Mason entered alone.

He climbed beside his grandmother.

Donna turned away from him.

“I’m sorry.”

Mason placed Daniel’s challenge coin in her hand.

“This reminds you that you’re not alone.”

Donna began crying.

Mason did not hug her.

He simply sat there.

Trust had not returned.

But the door was open.

Pike’s information led investigators to years of hidden payments.

Colin agreed to cooperate after learning Travis intended to blame him for everything.

He claimed Travis had caused Ben’s fatal construction accident.

According to Colin, Travis damaged a safety control to frighten Ben.

The equipment failed more severely than expected.

Colin then falsified the scene report.

Pike pressured the company to settle.

“Can we prove it?” I asked.

Elena placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.

Inside was a small digital recorder.

“Donna took this from Travis’s truck.”

The recorder captured his conversation with her.

His words were clear.

Ben should have stopped when I warned him. Colin cleaned up the mess, and Pike buried it.

Donna had finally seen who Travis was.

She had also risked everything to preserve his confession.

Hannah prepared new charges.

Ben’s death was officially reopened as a homicide investigation.

That evening, Travis called me.

“You turned Colin against me.”

“You did that yourself.”

“You found Ben’s letter.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know he wasn’t innocent.”

“I know he tried to stop you.”

“He put his family in danger.”

“So did you.”

“I gave Rachel a home.”

“You made her home a prison.”

His breathing changed.

“You think this ends in court?”

“It ends with you behind bars.”

“No, Emily. It ends where it started.”

The line disconnected.

Seconds later, the hospital lost power.

Emergency lights flashed on.

An alarm sounded from Donna’s floor.

Elena and I ran upstairs.

Donna’s room was empty.

The window was open.

A red thread was tied to the handle.

This time, it had no knots.
