Chapter 1

A Ragged Little Boy Ran Into My Wedding And Screamed, “Dad, Please Save Mom!”—Then I Saw My Groom’s Face
I was standing at the altar in a Nashville church when the back doors suddenly flew open.
A little boy, maybe seven years old, ran down the aisle.
His shirt was torn, his shoes were covered in mud, and tears were streaming down his face.
Everyone turned to stare.
Then he looked straight at my groom, Ethan.
“Dad!”
My smile disappeared.
The boy ran faster.
“Dad, please save Mom!”
The entire church went silent.
I slowly turned toward Ethan.
His face had gone completely white.
“Ethan… who is that?”
He didn’t answer.
The boy grabbed Ethan’s hand.
“Please! Mom can’t get up!”
Ethan pulled his hand away and whispered, “Noah, you shouldn’t be here.”
My heart stopped.
He knew the boy’s name.
I stepped backward.
“You know him?”
Ethan’s mother, Margaret, suddenly rushed from the front row.
“Someone get that child out of here.”
Noah looked at her and started crying harder.
“You said Dad didn’t want us anymore!”
Guests began whispering.
I stared at Margaret.
“What is he talking about?”
She snapped, “The boy is confused.”
But Noah pointed directly at Ethan.
“He’s my dad. I have pictures.”
Ethan finally grabbed my arm.
“Claire, I can explain.”
I pulled away.
“No. Explain why a child just called you his father at our wedding.”
Before Ethan could speak, Noah tugged desperately at his jacket.
“Dad, Mom is in the car outside.”
Ethan froze.
The boy’s next words were barely louder than a whisper.
“She said if she closes her eyes, she might not wake up.”
Ethan suddenly ran toward the church doors.
I followed him outside with half the wedding behind me.
An old car was parked crookedly near the curb.
A woman was slumped against the passenger window.
Ethan stopped so suddenly I nearly crashed into him.
Then he whispered her name.
“Sarah…”
I looked at him.
“You told me Sarah died eight years ago.”

The woman slowly opened her eyes, saw Ethan standing beside me in his wedding suit, and whispered something that made everyone around us go silent.
“Ask him why he told you our son was dead.”
