Chapter 4

Julian arrived at the police station before Alexander could call him.
That frightened Alexander more than any denial would have.
His brother walked into the interview room wearing a dark suit and a look of practiced concern.
“I heard about the break-in,” Julian said. “Is Sofia safe?”
“How did you hear?”
“Mother called me.”
“I didn’t tell Mother where we were.”
“She heard the police were involved.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
Julian glanced at Marcus.
“You brought him back?”
“Evelyn trusted him.”
“Evelyn was frightened and confused near the end.”
Alexander stood so quickly that his chair struck the wall.
“Do not speak about my wife like that.”
Julian raised both hands.
“I loved her too.”
“Dominic says you changed her route the night she died.”
The color drained from Julian’s face for less than a second.
Then he laughed.
“Dominic Crane is a criminal. He was fired for stealing fuel cards.”
“He worked for us until after Evelyn’s funeral.”
“I wanted to avoid a scandal.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Did you tell Evelyn to take Mountain Road?”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“She called me because the highway was backed up. I suggested another route. That’s all.”
“How did Dominic know about it?”
“He was monitoring the security channel.”
“Why was he following her?”
“He wasn’t.”
“He testified that he saw the crash.”
Julian looked at Alexander.
“Are you really going to let this man turn us against each other?”
“This man did not dress my daughter like a servant.”
“No. Veronica did. And I warned you about her.”
“You recommended her for the foundation.”
“That was six years ago.”
“You approved payments she signed.”
Julian sat down.
“Someone used my authorization code.”
“That is convenient.”
“It is the truth.”
Detective Brooks entered with a tablet in her hand.
“Dominic is ready to make a statement.”
Julian rose.
“My lawyer will be present for any questions involving me.”
“No one said you were under arrest.”
“Not yet.”
He walked to the door, then looked back at Alexander.
“Be careful who you trust. Grief made you blind once. Don’t let guilt do it again.”
Dominic’s statement lasted almost two hours.
He admitted that Veronica had paid him to break into the safe house.
He admitted following Evelyn on the night of the crash.
But he denied cutting her brake line.
“Veronica said the red box contained financial records,” he said. “She told me Alexander would destroy them to protect his family.”
“Why did you believe her?” Detective Brooks asked.
Dominic smiled bitterly.
“Because rich families destroy evidence every day.”
“What happened the night Evelyn died?”
“Julian called me. He said Evelyn had become emotional and might hurt herself. He ordered me to follow her.”
Alexander’s hands curled into fists beneath the table.
“Did she appear emotional?”
“She drove fast.”
“Because she believed someone was chasing her.”
Dominic looked down.
“Maybe.”
“Did you force her off the road?”
“No.”
“Did you see anyone else?”
Dominic hesitated.
“A gray truck.”
“Who was driving?”
“I couldn’t see.”
“What happened?”
“The truck pulled beside her. Her car swerved. Then she missed the turn.”
“Why wasn’t the truck in your original statement?”
“Julian told me I had imagined it.”
Alexander surged to his feet.
“You let him erase the last minutes of my wife’s life?”
Dominic recoiled.
“He threatened my family.”
“And now you break into a house where my daughter is sleeping?”
“Veronica said no one would be there except staff.”
“She knew Sofia was there.”
Dominic’s face changed.
For the first time, he appeared genuinely disturbed.
“She told me Sofia was with you.”
Detective Brooks placed a photograph of the silver key in front of him.
“What did Veronica think it opened?”
“She didn’t say. She only said Evelyn had hidden something that could put all of them in prison.”
“All of whom?”
“Veronica. Julian. And someone she called E.”
Alexander thought of his mother.
Eleanor.
He rejected the thought immediately.
His mother could be harsh and obsessed with reputation, but she had adored Evelyn.
Then he remembered how quickly Eleanor had embraced Veronica.
How often she had insisted Alexander remarry.
How she had dismissed Sofia’s sudden fearfulness as a phase.
His phone rang.
It was Eleanor.
“Alexander, what have you done?” she demanded before he could speak.
“What do you mean?”
“Veronica is at my house. She is hysterical.”
“You need to call the police.”
“I will do no such thing.”
“She abused Sofia.”
“She disciplined her.”
Alexander’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“You knew?”
“I knew Sofia was having tantrums. Veronica said she was refusing to follow simple rules.”
“She locked her in a room and forced her to clean in a maid uniform.”
“That sounds dramatic.”
“It is what my daughter told me.”
“Your daughter is four. She also believes stuffed animals talk.”
Alexander pulled the phone away and stared at it in disbelief.
“Put Veronica on.”
“I think you should calm down first.”
“Mother, if you help her leave, you could be charged.”
Eleanor gasped.
“You would threaten me?”
“I am warning you.”
“I gave everything to this family.”
“So did Evelyn.”
His mother went silent.
Alexander heard a door close on her end.
Then Veronica’s voice came through.
“You should have listened to my warning.”
“Where is the blue book?”
Another silence.
Then Veronica laughed.
“So Sofia heard more than I thought.”
“If you go near her again—”
“What? You’ll call the police? They’re already looking for me.”
“Turn yourself in.”
“I didn’t kill Evelyn.”
“Then tell me who did.”
“You already know.”
“Julian?”
Veronica lowered her voice.
“Ask your mother what she paid Dominic for two days after the funeral.”
The call ended.
Alexander turned toward Detective Brooks.
“We need to search my mother’s financial records.”
Eleanor’s attorney tried to block the warrant.
He failed.
Records showed a payment of fifty thousand dollars to a company controlled by Dominic’s wife.
Eleanor claimed it had been a severance payment.
Marcus found no employment contract supporting that story.
By evening, the story had reached the media.
A photograph of Sofia in the maid uniform appeared online.
Someone had taken it through the library window.
The headline accused Alexander of allowing his fiancée to abuse his daughter.
Vaughn Foundation donors began calling.
Board members demanded answers.
Julian scheduled an emergency meeting without Alexander’s permission.
The scandal spread faster than the truth.
At the secure house, Sofia saw her picture on June’s tablet.
“Am I bad?” she asked.
June immediately turned off the screen.
“No, sweetheart.”
“Why are people looking at me?”
Alexander knelt beside her.
“Because someone is trying to scare us.”
“Veronica?”
“Maybe.”
Sofia touched the hem of the gray uniform, which Detective Brooks had returned in an evidence bag.
“She kept checking it.”
Alexander frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“When she put it on me. She kept feeling the bottom.”
“Why?”
“She said Mommy hid things everywhere.”
Alexander opened the evidence bag.
The hem was thicker on one side.
Marcus used a small knife to cut the stitching.
A memory card dropped into his palm.
Sofia stared at it.
“Is that Mommy’s secret?”
Alexander’s heart pounded.
“It might be.”
They placed the card in an offline computer.
It contained dozens of documents.
Foundation transfers.
Photographs of Veronica meeting Dominic.
Copies of messages between someone identified only as JV and Veronica.
And one short video recorded inside Evelyn’s office.
Veronica stood near the desk.
Julian’s face was visible in a mirror behind her.
“We cannot keep moving money,” Veronica said. “Evelyn is watching every account.”
Julian replied from outside the camera’s view.
“Then make sure she stops watching.”
The video ended.
Marcus looked at Alexander.
“That is enough to bring Julian in.”
But Alexander kept staring at the file list.
One folder was labeled FOR SOFIA.
It required a password.
Before he could try one, the lights went out.
The security alarm began screaming.
Marcus grabbed his weapon and rushed to the hall.
June ran upstairs.
Alexander followed.
Sofia’s bedroom door was open.
The window had been unlocked from inside.
The bed was empty.
On the pillow lay the yellow bear and a handwritten message.
Bring Evelyn’s memory card to the old lake house.
