Chapter 1

At My Mother-in-Law’s Birthday Party, My Daughter Took One Sip Of Orange Juice And Collapsed—Then My Mother-in-Law Tried To Hide The Glass

We were halfway through my mother-in-law Diane’s birthday dinner in Nashville when my eight-year-old daughter, Lily, reached for a glass of orange juice on the table.

“Mom, can I have this?”

I was talking to my husband, Daniel, and nodded without thinking.

Lily took two quick sips.

Less than a minute later, I heard her glass hit the floor.

“Mommy…”

I turned and saw my daughter gripping the edge of the table.

Then her knees gave out.

“Lily!”

I caught her before her head hit the floor.

Everyone started shouting, but Diane remained strangely still.

Daniel dropped beside us.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know!”

Lily’s breathing sounded wrong, and panic shot through me.

I grabbed my phone and called 911.

That was when Diane suddenly picked up Lily’s glass.

“What are you doing?” I shouted.

“It’s in the way.”

She started walking toward the kitchen.

“Put it down!”

Diane stopped.

Every person at the table went silent.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Mom, why are you taking her glass?”

Her hand began shaking.

“I was just cleaning up.”

Our sister-in-law Rachel suddenly stood.

“No, you weren’t.”

Diane’s face changed.

Rachel pointed at the glass.

“I saw you standing over those drinks before everyone arrived.”

Daniel slowly looked at his mother.

“What did you put in there?”

Diane snapped, “Nothing!”

Sirens grew louder outside.

Then Lily weakly grabbed my sleeve.

“Mommy…”

I leaned close.

She whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Grandma told me to drink from the glass with my name under it.”

I looked toward the table.

There was something beneath the spot where Lily’s glass had been sitting.

Daniel reached for it first.

The second he saw what was there, he turned toward his mother and whispered, “Mom… what did you do?”
