Chapter 7

Evelyn stood outside Room 23 while police searched.
Her legs felt weak.
Marissa was gone.
Again.
But this time there were signs she had not left willingly.
Caleb walked beside her.
“This is exactly how Cole operates.”
“You think Cole arranged this from jail?”
“He doesn’t need to.”
“Mercer.”
“Maybe.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You keep saying maybe.”
“Because this is bigger than Mercer.”
Before she could answer, Detective Grant emerged.
“We found something.”
Inside the motel room, officers had discovered a flash drive taped beneath the sink.
Marissa had hidden it.
Grant connected it to an isolated police laptop.
There was one video file.
Recorded two days before Nathan died.
Nathan appeared on-screen.
Beside him sat Marissa.
Evelyn felt as if someone had struck her.
Nathan looked exhausted.
“If you’re watching this,” he said, “something went wrong.”
Marissa in the video looked terrified.
She placed bank documents on the table.
“I made mistakes,” she said.
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
Marissa continued.
“Three years ago, Mercer approached me. I owed money. He offered me work.”
“What work?” Nathan asked.
“Moving funds.”
“Did you know they were stolen?”
“Eventually.”
“And Cole?”
“He collected money. Threatened people.”
Nathan leaned toward the camera.
“Did Mercer order Caleb’s attack?”
“Yes.”
Caleb closed his eyes.
Helen gripped his arm.
Then Nathan asked the question everyone feared.
“Did Mercer tell Cole to hurt me?”
Marissa started crying.
“Yes.”
Evelyn could barely breathe.
Nathan remained calm.
“How?”
Marissa hesitated.
“He said your heart condition made everything easy.”
The room went silent.
“He told Cole to replace your medicine.”
Evelyn covered her face.
There it was.
Not suspicion.
Not theory.
A confession from someone inside the operation.
But the video continued.
Nathan asked, “Why did you come to me?”
Marissa looked directly into the camera.
“Because Evelyn is my sister.”
Evelyn started sobbing.
“I did terrible things,” Marissa said. “But I won’t let them kill you.”
Nathan reached across and squeezed her hand.
“You’re helping me stop them.”
Then Marissa said something unexpected.
“Mercer isn’t the top.”
Caleb opened his eyes.
Nathan nodded.
“I know.”
“Have you told Evelyn?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the person above Mercer is connected to her family.”
Evelyn stepped closer to the screen.
Nathan looked directly into the camera.
“My father-in-law.”
Evelyn went numb.
Her father.
Thomas Reed.
A respected businessman.
The man who had paid for Evelyn’s wedding.
The grandfather Wren adored.
“No.”
Helen whispered, “Evelyn…”
“No.”
Nathan continued.
“Thomas financed Mercer’s original companies. He used Mercer to hide money for years.”
Evelyn remembered her father’s wealth.
The businesses.
The unexplained trips.
The way Nathan had slowly stopped attending family dinners.
She had assumed they simply disliked each other.
The video ended with Nathan saying, “If I survive this, I’m telling Evelyn everything tomorrow.”
He died the next morning.
Evelyn stared at the blank screen.
Then her phone rang.
DAD.
Everyone looked at her.
Grant whispered, “Answer.”
Evelyn did.
“Dad?”
Thomas sounded worried.
“Sweetheart, where are you?”
Evelyn forced herself to breathe.
“At home.”
“You’re lying.”
Her blood ran cold.
Thomas’s voice changed.
“I told Nathan not to drag you into things he didn’t understand.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Where is Marissa?”
Silence.
Then Thomas sighed.
“Come home, Evelyn.”
“You killed my husband.”
“I protected this family.”
“You killed him!”
“No.”
His voice hardened.
“Cole killed Nathan because Mercer panicked.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn started shaking.
“And you let me grieve while you hugged me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“Where is Marissa?”
Thomas paused.
Then he said, “If you want your sister alive, bring me Caleb.”
Caleb stared at her.
Evelyn whispered, “Why?”
May you like
“Because he has something that belongs to me.”
The call ended.
