Chapter 1

Evelyn had stopped calling before she visited.
For three weeks, every conversation with her son Grant had ended the same way.
“Maisie’s sleeping.”
“Maisie’s at preschool.”
“Maisie doesn’t feel like talking.”
At first, Evelyn tried to believe him.
Then Vanessa started answering Grant’s phone.
“You worry too much,” Vanessa told her one afternoon. “Maisie is fine.”
Something about the word fine stayed with Evelyn.
So on Thursday morning, Evelyn drove across town without warning.
Grant’s SUV was in the driveway.
Vanessa’s car was beside it.
Evelyn knocked.
No answer.
She knocked again.
“Grant?”
Still nothing.
Then she heard the scream.
It came from upstairs.
A child’s scream.
“Grandma!”
Evelyn froze.
“Maisie?”
Another scream tore through the house.
“GRANDMA!”
Evelyn tried the front door.
Unlocked.
She rushed inside, gripping her cane as she climbed the stairs.
A smart-home alarm was chirping somewhere.
Then another electronic voice sounded.
“Water leak detected. Second-floor bedroom.”
Evelyn reached the hallway and stopped.
Vanessa stood outside Maisie’s bedroom.
A brass key was in her hand.
Grant stood several feet away, staring at his phone.
Water was already creeping from beneath the bedroom door.
“What is happening?” Evelyn demanded.
Vanessa turned pale.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Maisie screamed again.
Evelyn rushed to the door and grabbed the handle.
It wouldn’t move.
A heavy bolt had been installed outside.
“Why is this locked?”
“She threw a tantrum,” Vanessa said quickly.
Evelyn stared at her.
“You locked a three-year-old inside?”
“It was supposed to be for five minutes.”
Water touched Evelyn’s shoes.
The smart-home system spoke again.
“Critical water warning.”
Grant silenced the alert on his phone.
Evelyn saw him do it.
Her stomach turned cold.
“Open this door.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She needs to learn consequences.”
“OPEN IT.”
Maisie began coughing behind the door.
That sound changed everything.
Evelyn saw the key in Vanessa’s fist.
She grabbed for it.
Vanessa pulled away.
“Don’t interfere with how we raise her!”
Evelyn struck Vanessa’s wrist with her cane.
The key fell.
Evelyn snatched it from the floor.
Grant moved toward her.
“Mom, stop.”
Evelyn ignored him.
She unlocked the bolt and threw the door open.
Water rushed into the hallway.
A broken bathroom faucet was spraying across the room.
Maisie was standing on the bed, soaked and shaking.
Her little face was red from crying.
“Grandma!”
Evelyn pushed through the water and lifted her.
Maisie wrapped both arms around her neck.
“I couldn’t get out.”
“I know, sweetheart.”
Vanessa entered behind them.
“Give her to me.”
Maisie screamed and buried her face against Evelyn.
“No!”
Vanessa grabbed Maisie’s arm.
Evelyn turned sharply.
“Take your hand off her.”
“She’s my stepdaughter.”
“And she is terrified of you.”
Vanessa pulled again.
Evelyn shoved her away.
Vanessa charged back.
Evelyn reacted before she could think.
Her hand struck Vanessa across the face.
Vanessa stumbled and fell against the hallway wall.
Grant’s expression changed instantly.
He raised his fist.
“You hit my wife?”
Evelyn put Maisie behind her.
Grant stepped closer.
Evelyn lifted her cane.
“Try it.”
He reached for her.
The cane struck his forearm.
Grant cursed.
Evelyn drove the handle against his shoulder and forced him backward until he hit the wall.
“You’re protecting her?” Evelyn shouted. “After what you just did to your own daughter?”
“I didn’t do anything!”
“That’s exactly the problem.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Grant’s face drained of color.
Vanessa stared toward the window.
“Who called them?”
Nobody answered.
A digital speaker in the hallway suddenly announced:
“Emergency response activated due to repeated unresolved water warnings.”
Grant looked at his phone.
The smart-home system had contacted emergency services automatically.
Minutes later, police officers entered the house with firefighters.
Evelyn carried Maisie downstairs wrapped in a blanket.
An officer stayed with them while two others examined the bedroom.
Then a technician opened the smart-home activity log.
The room went silent.
The system had issued its first warning twenty-seven minutes earlier.
Grant had dismissed it.
Five minutes later, another alert had appeared.
Vanessa had dismissed that one.
Then another.
And another.
There were six warnings.
Both adults had known.
Worse, the hallway camera showed Vanessa testing the locked bedroom door after the first warning.
She knew Maisie could not escape.
Grant knew too.
The officer turned toward him.
“Place your hands behind your back.”
Grant stared at Evelyn.
“Mom, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
Evelyn held Maisie tighter.
“No.”
“Mom.”
“No more excuses.”
Vanessa began crying as another officer handcuffed her.
“You’re destroying this family!”
Evelyn looked at her granddaughter.
Maisie was still shaking.
“No,” Evelyn said quietly. “I’m finally protecting it.”
As Grant and Vanessa were taken outside, Maisie lifted her head.
“Grandma?”
“Yes, baby?”
“Do I have to stay here?”
Evelyn kissed her wet hair.
“Not tonight.”
But when Evelyn looked toward the staircase, she noticed something she had missed before.
A second camera.
Small.
Hidden near the ceiling.
Pointed toward Maisie’s bedroom.
And unlike the hallway camera, it wasn’t connected to the smart-home system.
Its red light was still blinking.
