Amazed

Chapter 3

Richard ran toward the side door.

It was already closing.

He shoved through it and entered the service corridor.

“Emily!”

Footsteps echoed ahead of him.

Marcus and two guards followed.

The corridor split near the freight elevators.

One elevator was descending.

The other had been disabled.

Richard hit the call button, but nothing happened.

“Stairs,” Marcus said.

They raced downward.

Richard took the steps two at a time.

His heart pounded with one thought.

He had found his daughter and lost her within minutes.

At the basement level, they burst through a metal door.

A catering cart had been overturned across the hallway.

Broken plates covered the floor.

A server lay against the wall, holding his head.

“He took the girl toward the loading dock,” the man said.

Richard ran past him.

Rain swept through the open loading entrance.

A black sedan was speeding toward the exit.

Emily’s face appeared behind the rear window.

She hit the glass with both hands.

“Richard!”

He chased the car.

It accelerated.

“Stop!”

The sedan crossed the security gate and disappeared into traffic.

Marcus was already calling the police.

Richard turned toward the loading supervisor.

“Whose car was that?”

“I don’t know.”

“Get me the security footage.”

“The cameras went down with the power.”

Richard looked at Marcus.

“That was planned.”

Marcus nodded.

“Someone accessed the control room.”

Richard clenched the brass key in his fist.

Grant had not acted alone.

His phone rang.

Evelyn.

Richard answered.

“Where is she?”

His mother sounded calm.

Too calm.

“What are you talking about?”

“Emily was taken.”

“Then call the police.”

“They’re already coming.”

“Good. We’ll discuss this when I arrive.”

“You knew who she was.”

“I knew Anna had a child.”

“She is my daughter.”

“You have read one dead woman’s accusation. That is not proof.”

“Grant kidnapped her.”

“Grant has served this family faithfully for years.”

“He had Anna’s key.”

Another pause.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Come upstairs, Richard. Do not chase Grant through the city like a desperate fool.”

“Why?”

“Because I know where he is taking her.”

Richard’s entire body went cold.

“Tell me.”

“Come to your office.”

She ended the call.

Richard wanted to throw the phone across the loading bay.

Instead, he turned to Marcus.

“My mother knows where Emily is.”

“I’ll come with you.”

“No. Give the police everything. Track Grant’s vehicle.”

Marcus studied him.

“You think Mrs. Hale is involved?”

“I don’t know what to think.”

“You do know.”

Richard said nothing.

He returned upstairs.

The gala guests were beginning to arrive.

Women in jeweled gowns stepped from luxury cars beneath the hotel awning.

Men in tailored suits laughed as cameras flashed.

None of them knew a child had just been kidnapped from the ballroom where they would soon drink champagne.

Richard entered his private office.

Evelyn Hale stood beside the windows.

At sixty-eight, she still carried herself like the entire city belonged to her.

Her silver hair was perfectly arranged.

Her black dress was severe and elegant.

She looked more irritated than frightened.

Beside her stood Richard’s younger brother, Daniel.

Daniel’s tie was loose, and his face showed genuine confusion.

“What happened?” Daniel asked. “Mother said Anna’s child came here.”

“Grant took her.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“You said the girl left.”

“I said she was removed from the ballroom.”

Richard locked the door.

“Where did he take her?”

Evelyn faced him.

“Before I answer, you need to understand what Anna did.”

“Anna wrote that you threatened her.”

“Anna was unstable.”

“She was pregnant.”

“She was manipulative.”

Richard slammed the letter onto his desk.

“She tried to contact me.”

“She wanted your money.”

“She never accepted the money.”

“She wanted more than money. She wanted your name.”

Richard stared at the woman who had raised him.

“All these years, you told me she left because I wasn’t enough.”

“You were grieving. Your father had just died. The company was collapsing. Anna knew exactly when to announce a pregnancy.”

“She did not announce it. You silenced her.”

Evelyn’s expression tightened.

“I protected you.”

“From my own child?”

“From a scandal that would have destroyed everything your father built.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mother, tell him where the girl is.”

Evelyn ignored him.

“Richard, the company is entering the largest merger in its history. If that child appears now, the board will believe Anna planned this.”

“Anna is dead.”

“The scandal is not.”

Richard approached his mother.

“If Emily is hurt, I will destroy this family’s name myself.”

For the first time, Evelyn looked uncertain.

“She will not be hurt.”

“Where is she?”

“Grant is taking her to the old Hale estate.”

Daniel stared at her.

“The house by the lake?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because that is where the remaining documents are.”

Richard held up the key.

“B-17?”

Evelyn’s eyes moved to it.

“That key opens a private box in your father’s study.”

“You knew.”

“Your father kept records of everything. Anna discovered that before he died.”

Richard grabbed his coat.

Daniel moved toward the door with him.

Evelyn blocked their path.

“If you go there without listening to me, Grant may panic.”

“He already kidnapped a child.”

“He is trying to recover information that could destroy us.”

Richard’s voice dropped.

“Emily is not information.”

“She is a nine-year-old girl who does not understand the weapon her mother gave her.”

“She understands that your employee broke the last gift her mother left her.”

Evelyn’s face remained hard.

“And now you are ready to give her everything because she has Anna’s eyes.”

Richard stopped.

Emily did have Anna’s eyes.

The same steady brown eyes that had once seen through every defense he built.

But Emily had something else too.

Fear.

A kind of fear Anna had never carried before the Hales entered her life.

“What did Father do?” Richard asked.

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Nothing that matters now.”

“Mother.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“What did he do?”

Evelyn turned back.

“Your father knew Anna was pregnant.”

Richard felt the floor shift beneath him.

“He knew?”

“He discovered what Grant and I had done. He intended to bring Anna back.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

“He died before he could reach you.”

Richard’s father had suffered a heart attack in his private study.

Richard had found him beside the desk.

For years, that memory had haunted him.

Now another detail returned.

A half-burned envelope in the fireplace.

Anna’s name visible on one corner.

Richard had assumed his father had destroyed her letter.

“What is in Box B-17?”

Evelyn’s calm finally cracked.

“Your father’s confession.”

Daniel stepped away from her.

“Confession to what?”

She did not answer.

Richard pulled the door open.

Evelyn caught his sleeve.

“If Grant sees you arrive with police, he may run.”

“Then tell him to release Emily.”

“He no longer answers to me.”

Richard froze.

“You ordered him to take her?”

“I ordered him to retrieve the documents before the gala.”

“You knew Emily had them.”

“I knew Anna had sent something to this hotel. Grant was supposed to handle it quietly.”

“He shoved her onto the floor.”

“I did not tell him to do that.”

“You called her a problem before you ever saw her.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with something that almost looked like regret.

But it vanished quickly.

“Richard, if the confession becomes public, your father’s legacy will be ruined.”

“I’m more concerned about my daughter.”

“You don’t know that she is yours.”

“I know you are afraid she is.”

He left with Daniel.

As they entered the elevator, Richard called Marcus.

“We’re going to the old estate. Send police, but keep them away from the main entrance.”

“We found the sedan,” Marcus said. “It crossed North Bridge six minutes ago.”

“That road leads to the lake.”

“There’s something else. Grant made a call after leaving the hotel.”

“To whom?”

“The number belongs to Anna Brooks’s sister.”

Richard’s chest tightened.

“Rosa?”

“Yes.”

“He has Emily’s aunt too?”

“We don’t know.”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“What aren’t they telling us?”

Daniel’s face had lost all color.

“There’s something I never told you.”

“What?”

“Anna contacted me eight years ago.”

Richard stared at his brother.

“She said Emily was your daughter. She begged me to help her reach you.”

“And what did you do?”

Daniel could barely meet his eyes.

“I told Mother.”

The elevator doors opened.

Richard did not move.

“You knew for eight years?”

“I believed Mother when she said the child wasn’t yours.”

“You never asked me?”

“I was twenty-four. I was afraid of her.”

Richard stepped out.

“So was Anna.”

Daniel followed.

“So is Emily.”

Richard turned on him.

“If we get her back, you will tell her the truth.”

“I will.”

“All of it.”

Daniel nodded.

They drove through the storm toward the lake.

Halfway there, Richard’s phone buzzed.

A video message appeared from Grant.

Emily sat inside his car with her wrists bound loosely by a silk scarf.

She was crying but unhurt.

Grant’s face entered the frame.

“Bring the key alone. No police. No security.”

Emily looked directly at the camera.

Then she said something so softly Richard almost missed it.

“He doesn’t know I have the last page.”

The video ended.

Richard played it again.

Daniel leaned closer.

“The last page?”

Richard remembered Emily kneeling beside the violin case.

She had checked the hidden pocket and said it was empty.

But she had never shown them her hands.

A spark of hope cut through his fear.

Emily had lied to Grant.

May you like

She had hidden the most important piece of evidence.

And now Grant was taking her directly to the place where the rest of the truth was buried.
