Chapter 1

Daniel Mercer opened the nursery door expecting silence.
Instead, he heard Sophie crying.
Not the tired little whimper she made after a nightmare.
This was panic.
“Daddy!”
Daniel froze.
His four-year-old daughter was inside the baby’s crib.
Vanessa stood over her.
The crib rails had been pulled up, and two thick fabric straps had been tied around them so Sophie could not push the side open.
One strap had been looped around Sophie’s wrist.
The other was twisted around the rail beside her.
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.
“What are you doing?”
Vanessa turned slowly.
She did not look frightened.
She looked annoyed.
“She kept leaving her room.”
Sophie stretched both arms toward him.
“Daddy, please help me!”
Daniel crossed the nursery in three steps.
He ripped the first strap loose.
Then the second.
Sophie’s wrists were red and bruised.
She clung to his neck the second he lifted her.
Her whole body shook.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do to her?”
“Don’t be dramatic.”
“Answer me.”
“I already did.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She wouldn’t stay in bed. She kept coming downstairs. I warned her three times.”
“So you tied her inside a crib?”
“It wasn’t hurting her.”
Daniel stared at the marks on Sophie’s wrists.
Sophie buried her face against his shoulder.
“She said Mommy wouldn’t want me anymore.”
Daniel’s eyes snapped toward Vanessa.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
“That’s not what I said.”
Sophie began crying harder.
“She said the new baby needs my room.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“She’s confused.”
Daniel backed away.
“Don’t come near her.”
“Daniel, give her to me.”
Vanessa reached for Sophie.
Daniel knocked her hand away.
She grabbed his arm.
“Stop acting insane.”
Then she reached for Sophie again.
Daniel slapped her.
The sound cracked through the nursery.
Vanessa staggered backward.
For the first time, her calm expression disappeared.
“You hit me.”
“You trapped my daughter.”
“You hit your pregnant wife!”
Daniel stared at her stomach.
Vanessa was seven months pregnant.
He had spent months preparing this nursery.
Painting the walls.
Building the crib.
Buying tiny clothes.
He had imagined Sophie standing beside him when her baby brother came home.
He had never imagined finding Sophie imprisoned inside that crib.
Daniel carried Sophie toward the hallway.
Vanessa blocked the doorway.
“You’re not taking her anywhere.”
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Move.”
“This is my house too.”
“Move.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped forward.
Vanessa finally backed into the hallway.
He shut the nursery door.
Then locked it.
Vanessa pounded against the other side.
“You trapped my daughter.”
Daniel held Sophie tighter.
“Now you stay outside.”
“Open this door!”
Daniel pulled out his phone.
He called downstairs.
“Marcus.”
His head of security answered immediately.
“Yes, sir?”
“Come upstairs. Bring two people.”
Vanessa stopped pounding.
“Daniel.”
He ignored her.
“And call the police.”
Silence.
Then Marcus said, “Understood.”
Vanessa’s voice changed.
“Daniel, please.”
He looked at Sophie’s wrists again.
“No.”
Security arrived less than a minute later.
Marcus took one look at Sophie and went pale.
Vanessa began talking quickly.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
Daniel opened the nursery door.
“Take her downstairs.”
Marcus hesitated.
“Sir, Mrs. Mercer is pregnant.”
“Then be careful.”
Vanessa backed away.
“You cannot throw me out.”
“No one is throwing you anywhere.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You’re going downstairs to wait for the police.”
Vanessa screamed when security escorted her toward the staircase.
“This is my home!”
Sophie flinched.
Daniel covered her ear.
“I’ve got you.”
Vanessa twisted around.
“Sophie is lying!”
Daniel stopped.
The entire hallway became silent.
Vanessa realized what she had said.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?”
“I didn’t mean—”
“You just called a four-year-old a liar.”
“She exaggerates!”
Sophie whispered into Daniel’s neck.
“She locked me in the closet too.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Sophie continued.
“And she took my food.”
“Sophie!”
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
“Say her name again and I swear you will regret it.”
Marcus immediately moved between them.
Vanessa was taken downstairs.
Daniel carried Sophie into his bedroom.
He placed her gently on the bed.
“Sweetheart.”
She would not release him.
“You’re safe.”
“Is she coming back?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he understood what that hesitation meant to a frightened child.
“I promise.”
Sophie finally loosened her grip.
Daniel examined her wrists.
There were older marks beneath the new ones.
His stomach dropped.
“Did Vanessa do this before?”
Sophie looked toward the door.
“She said I couldn’t tell.”
“Why?”
“She said you would send me away.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He had trusted Vanessa.
He had believed her complaints when she said Sophie had become difficult.
He had believed Sophie was struggling because of the pregnancy.
Tantrums.
Nightmares.
Refusing meals.
Crying whenever Daniel left for work.
He had thought his daughter was afraid of losing his attention.
Now he wondered if Sophie had been trying to tell him the truth.
Sirens sounded outside.
Daniel kissed her forehead.
“You are never being sent away.”
Police entered the mansion.
An officer photographed Sophie’s wrists.
Another officer spoke with Vanessa downstairs.
Daniel stayed beside Sophie.
Then Marcus entered.
He looked deeply unsettled.
“Sir.”
“What?”
“There’s something you need to see.”
Daniel followed him into the security office.
Marcus pulled up footage from the interior cameras.
“The nursery camera was disabled three weeks ago.”
“By who?”
“We couldn’t tell.”
Marcus opened another file.
“This is from the upstairs hallway.”
The video showed Vanessa walking Sophie toward the guest bedroom.
Sophie was crying.
Vanessa looked around.
Then shoved the child inside a closet.
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
The timestamp showed 2:14 p.m.
Daniel had been at work.
Marcus changed clips.
Another day.
Vanessa took Sophie’s dinner plate from the table and dumped it into the trash.
Another day.
She dragged Sophie away from the front door after Daniel left.
Another.
Sophie sat alone on the staircase while Vanessa shouted inches from her face.
Daniel could not hear the words.
But he could see Sophie shaking.
“How long?”
Marcus swallowed.
“I’m checking.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then Vanessa appeared in the security-room doorway.
Two police officers stood behind her.
Her face was wet with tears.
“Daniel, I can explain.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Vanessa placed one hand over her stomach.
“Our son needs you.”
Daniel looked at her.
Then at the screen.
“My daughter needed me too.”
A police officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Mercer, we need to ask Mrs. Mercer some questions at the station.”
Vanessa’s face went white.
“You’re arresting me?”
“We’re investigating.”
Vanessa stared at Daniel.
“Tell them this was discipline.”
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel!”
He walked toward the officer.
“There may be weeks of footage.”
Vanessa stopped crying.
Her expression hardened.
“Be careful.”
Daniel looked back.
“What does that mean?”
“You think I’m the only person in this house with secrets?”
Daniel frowned.
Vanessa gave him a strange smile.
“Ask Marcus why the nursery camera really stopped recording.”
Everyone turned toward Marcus.
Marcus went still.
Daniel stared at his security chief.
“Marcus?”
May you like
Vanessa smiled wider.
And for the first time that night, Daniel realized the nightmare inside his house might be much bigger than Vanessa.
