Amazed

Chapter 7

We reached the storage facility in eight minutes.

It felt like eight years.

Police surrounded the building, but Dad refused to wait for a tactical team.

“My daughter is inside.”

Marcus found the unit with the blue door.

It was locked from the outside.

Dad broke it open.

Sophie was lying behind a stack of boxes.

Her wrists were bound.

A man in a gray jacket stood over her, holding a syringe.

I hit him before he could turn.

My shoulder drove into his chest.

He crashed against the wall.

The syringe fell.

Dad pulled Sophie away while Marcus restrained the man.

I knelt beside my sister.

“Sophie, look at me.”

Her eyes were unfocused.

“He gave me something.”

Paramedics rushed inside.

They found a puncture mark on her arm, but she was conscious and breathing.

The syringe contained a powerful sedative.

If we had arrived five minutes later, Ryan’s man could have moved her anywhere.

At the hospital, Sophie refused to let go of my hand.

Mom sat beside us, her face swollen from Diane’s attack.

Dad stood near the door.

None of us knew how to speak to one another anymore.

Our family had spent years hiding painful truths.

Ryan had entered those hidden spaces and turned them into weapons.

A detective arrived with worse news.

Victor had survived surgery, but Dad was being investigated for assaulting Ryan during the first rescue.

Ryan’s attorney had released the damaged ring recording to the media.

The edited audio made it sound as if I attacked Ryan before Dad entered the house and beat him.

News channels were already calling Dad a violent former military executive.

“That recording was altered,” I said.

“We know,” the detective replied. “But proving it will take time.”

“Ryan shot Victor.”

“The gun recovered at the house was registered to Diane. Her fingerprints were on it.”

“She didn’t fire it.”

“Ryan’s prints weren’t found.”

He had wiped the weapon before leaving.

Diane was now claiming Ryan had forced her to participate.

She said I had always been unstable and violent.

Mom stood.

“That woman helped kidnap my daughter.”

“We are holding her on multiple charges,” the detective said. “But Ryan is still missing.”

After he left, Dad’s company board called an emergency meeting.

They placed Dad on temporary leave.

Victor’s financial crimes were spreading across the news.

Government investigators froze several company accounts.

In less than twenty-four hours, Ryan had attacked our bodies, our family, and our reputation.

Sophie woke fully that evening.

She asked to speak with me alone.

“There’s something I never told you,” she whispered.

Her voice shook.

“About Ryan?”

She nodded.

Six months earlier, Ryan had visited her in Boston.

He told her he was planning a surprise anniversary trip for me.

He asked to use her computer to print the tickets.

While she made coffee, he copied files from Dad’s private cloud account.

Sophie caught him.

Ryan grabbed her wrist and threatened to destroy our family if she told anyone.

“I was scared,” she said. “Then you started wearing long sleeves. I knew he was hurting you, but I didn’t know how to ask.”

I held her.

“This is not your fault.”

“I saved something.”

She had copied the security footage from her apartment hallway before Ryan deleted it.

The video showed him arriving with Victor.

Victor stood outside while Ryan entered.

That meant Victor had continued helping Ryan even after my marriage.

Sophie gave us the password to her backup drive.

Marcus opened it.

The hallway video contained no sound, but the timestamp matched a transfer from Victor’s office.

Then Marcus noticed something reflected in a hallway mirror.

Ryan was holding a document.

He enlarged the image.

At the top was the logo for the Harrington Foundation.

Mom recognized it immediately.

The foundation was hosting a charity gala the following night.

Every board member from Carter Defense Systems would attend.

So would several foreign technology investors.

Ryan did not plan to hide.

He planned to sell Project Ruby in front of the people who had just removed Dad from power.

Dad called the police.

The detective warned him not to approach the gala.

“You’re under investigation. If you show up armed, Ryan will use it against you.”

Dad turned to me after the call.

“I can’t go.”

“I can.”

Mom shook her head.

“Emily, no.”

“Ryan expects Dad. He expects police. He doesn’t expect the wife he tried to destroy to walk into that room alone.”

Sophie reached for my hand.

“You won’t be alone.”

I looked at her bruised wrists.

“You’re staying here.”

“No. I know the foundation building. I volunteered there last year.”

Dad began to object.

Sophie lifted her chin.

“He used both of us because he thought fear would keep us silent.”

May you like

She looked at me.

“Let’s prove him wrong.”
