Chapter 8

David denied accessing the trust.
Agent Patel believed him.
The login came from an account created in his name, but the location traced to the hotel where Helen had stayed after leaving the house.
Helen was still in jail.
That left Vanessa.
Police found her hotel room empty.
Her clothes were gone.
So was the new car Ethan had purchased with stolen money.
Security footage showed Vanessa leaving two hours before the quarry kidnapping.
She carried Robert’s briefcase.
When investigators searched her banking history, they discovered transfers from Maria.
Vanessa had known far more than she admitted.
“She helped Maria copy David’s credentials,” Agent Patel said. “She may also be helping Ethan.”
Maria refused to speak after her arrest.
Robert blamed everything on her.
Helen blamed Robert and Ethan.
Ethan remained missing.
The family that once united to torment Lily was now tearing itself apart to survive.
But Lily wasn’t celebrating.
She sat on the living-room floor, staring at the repaired blue music box.
Police had returned it after removing the hidden key.
“Was this really your mother’s?” she asked me.
“Yes.”
“And Grandma Evelyn put the number inside it?”
“Your grandfather did.”
Lily turned the small silver handle.
A soft melody played.
“Why did everyone care more about money than people?”
I sat beside her.
“I don’t know.”
“You care about the money.”
“I care about returning it to the people it was taken from.”
“But would Grandpa have returned it?”
The question hurt.
“I hope so.”
“That isn’t the same as knowing.”
“No,” I admitted. “It isn’t.”
She looked toward the kitchen, where David was speaking with his attorney.
“Are you divorcing Dad?”
I had tried to avoid making promises until I understood what I wanted.
Lily deserved an answer.
“Yes.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because of me?”
“No. Because of his choices.”
“He got shot saving us.”
“He also helped create the danger.”
“Can he still be my dad?”
“If you want him to be, and if he proves he can protect you.”
Lily leaned against me.
“I’m angry at him.”
“You’re allowed to be.”
“I still love him.”
“You’re allowed to do that too.”
David entered a few minutes later.
He saw our faces and seemed to understand.
“I found something,” he said.
He placed Robert’s old business ledger on the table.
Police had copied it from the quarry files.
“Vanessa’s maiden name is Price,” he said. “Her father was Thomas Price.”
The name appeared throughout the ledger.
Thomas Price owned a small concrete company destroyed by Robert and my father’s invoice scheme.
He lost his business.
Two years later, he took his own life.
“Vanessa married Ethan because of what our fathers did,” David said.
“To get revenge?”
“Maybe.”
A message arrived on Lily’s tablet.
It came from Vanessa.
I’m sorry. Ethan is going to the lake house. He has Rachel.
I called my sister.
No answer.
My mother had gone to Rachel’s home that morning.
She didn’t answer either.
We sent the message to Agent Patel.
Within minutes, officers found Rachel’s house empty.
There were signs of a struggle in the garage.
A neighbor had seen Rachel and Evelyn being forced into a car.
The lake house belonged to Robert.
It stood near the southern edge of Red Hollow Lake.
Agent Patel ordered us to remain behind.
I ignored her.
“So did I,” David said.
“You’re not coming.”
“Ethan is my brother.”
“That doesn’t qualify you to negotiate with him.”
“No. But he’ll listen to me longer than he’ll listen to police.”
Lily stepped between us.
“I’m coming too.”
“No,” David and I said together.
She folded her arms.
“He took Aunt Rachel because of us.”
“That is exactly why you’re staying with Officer Ramirez.”
“I helped at the quarry.”
“You should never have needed to.”
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“You keep saying I’m brave, then you treat me like I’m helpless.”
I knelt in front of her.
“Being brave doesn’t mean walking into every danger. Sometimes bravery means trusting people to come back.”
“People don’t always come back.”
She was thinking about her biological father.
About my father.
About my mother disappearing.
I held her tightly.
“We will do everything possible.”
Officer Ramirez stayed with Lily.
David and I rode with Agent Patel.
The lake house stood among tall pines.
Vanessa’s car was parked outside.
The front door was open.
A phone sat on the porch.
When we approached, it rang.
Ethan’s voice came through the speaker.
“Only David enters.”
“I’m coming with him,” I said.
“Then Rachel dies.”
David looked at me.
“I’ll go.”
“You’re injured.”
“He wants me, not you.”
Agent Patel placed a small transmitter beneath David’s sling.
This time, Ethan didn’t search him.
David entered.
We watched through a thermal camera from the woods.
Five people were inside.
David.
Ethan.
Rachel.
My mother.
And Vanessa.
Their voices came through the transmitter.
“You ruined everything,” Ethan told David.
“You ruined yourself.”
“I was building something.”
“With stolen money.”
“Dad said it belonged to us.”
“Dad lied.”
A chair moved.
Rachel shouted, “Don’t touch him!”
Ethan laughed.
“You always liked David better.”
Rachel answered, “I barely know either of you.”
Vanessa’s voice cut in.
“Give me the gun, Ethan.”
“You brought them here.”
“I brought Evelyn. You took Rachel.”
“You wanted revenge.”
“I wanted the truth.”
“The truth doesn’t return your father.”
“No. But neither does becoming Robert.”
Silence followed.
David spoke calmly.
“Vanessa, help them leave.”
Ethan shouted, “Nobody leaves until Grace opens the trust.”
“The authorities have the keys,” David said.
“But Grace has biometric control.”
“What do you want from her?”
“Thirty million dollars.”
“You’ll never receive it.”
“Then Mom loses her house, Dad dies in prison, and everything our family built disappears.”
“Our family built nothing. They stole it.”
A gunshot exploded inside.
The thermal image showed one person falling.
I ran before Agent Patel could stop me.
Agents followed.
We entered through the rear door.
Vanessa lay on the kitchen floor, clutching her leg.
Ethan dragged Rachel toward the stairs.
David stood between him and Mom.
“Let Rachel go,” I said.
Ethan aimed the gun at me.
“You should have stayed outside.”
“You should have stayed at dinner and apologized over a burned steak.”
His face tightened.
“You think this started with that plate?”
“No. It started when your parents taught you that everyone else deserved less.”
“Don’t talk about my parents.”
“They sacrificed you to protect themselves.”
“Shut up.”
“Robert told police you planned everything. Helen said the kidnapping was your idea.”
“They’re scared.”
“They abandoned you.”
His hand trembled.
Rachel elbowed him and pulled away.
Agents rushed forward.
Ethan fired toward the ceiling and ran upstairs.
David followed.
I shouted at him to stop.
A window shattered on the second floor.
Ethan climbed onto the roof.
A speedboat waited at the dock.
David caught him near the edge.
The brothers fought beneath the rain.
Ethan struck David’s injured shoulder.
David collapsed.
I climbed through the window.
Ethan pointed the gun at him.
“You were always weak,” he said.
David looked up.
“I was weak every time I protected you.”
Ethan’s finger tightened against the trigger.
Vanessa appeared behind me, leaning against the window frame.
She held a second gun.
“Put it down, Ethan.”
He stared at his wife.
“You betrayed me.”
“I married you to learn what Robert did to my father.”
“Did you ever love me?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Yes. That was my mistake.”
Ethan turned his gun toward her.
David tackled him.
Both men slid across the wet roof.
Ethan went over the edge.
His hand caught the gutter.
David grabbed his wrist.
For one moment, they remained that way.
The brother who had spent his life demanding rescue.
The brother who had spent his life providing it.
“Pull me up,” Ethan begged.
David’s wounded shoulder shook.
“Give me your other hand.”
Ethan lifted the gun instead.
I kicked it away.
The movement tore the gutter loose.
Ethan fell onto the balcony below.
Agents reached him within seconds.
He survived with a broken leg and fractured ribs.
As officers carried him away, he looked at David.
“You chose her over your own brother.”
David stood beside Lily’s mother for the last time as my husband.
“No,” he said. “I finally chose what was right.”
At the hospital, Vanessa agreed to cooperate.
She admitted working with Maria to expose Robert.
But revenge had slowly become greed.
Maria promised her part of the trust.
Vanessa helped copy passwords and move money.
She claimed she never knew Ethan would kidnap Lily.
That did not erase her crimes.
By sunrise, every person involved was in custody.
I believed the worst was over.
Then Agent Patel received a message from the trust administrator.
The sixty million dollars had vanished.
May you like
Someone had completed the transfer using my biometric confirmation during the confrontation at headquarters.
The receiving account belonged to Lily.
