Chapter 1

I Came Home After Three Months Away With the Military—Then I Opened My Front Door and Found My Daughter Bound to a Post While My Husband Held Another Woman
I had been away on military duty for three months when I came home to our house outside San Diego two days earlier than expected.
I wanted to surprise my husband, Ryan, and my ten-year-old daughter, Emma.
The moment I opened the door, I heard muffled crying.
“Emma?”
No one answered.
Then I walked into the living room and felt my entire body go cold.
My daughter was tied to a wooden support post near the hallway.
A cloth had been stuffed across her mouth, and tears covered her face.
Ryan was sitting on the sofa with a woman I recognized immediately.
Vanessa.
The woman he had once promised was “just a coworker.”
His arm was around her waist.
“Mom!” Emma cried through the cloth.
I rushed across the room and pulled it away.
“Who did this to you?”
Emma pointed at Vanessa with shaking hands.
Vanessa didn’t even stand up.
Instead, she smiled.
“Your precious daughter wouldn’t stop screaming.”
I stared at her.
“You tied up my child?”
Ryan jumped to his feet.
“Emily, calm down.”
“Calm down?”
I started untying Emma while Vanessa folded her arms.
“She’s spoiled, disrespectful, and just as dramatic as her mother.”
Emma buried her face against me.
Vanessa laughed.
“Three months without you was actually peaceful until she started interfering.”
I looked at Ryan.
“You let her do this?”
He avoided my eyes.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Ryan chose me while you were gone.”
Then she looked directly at Emma.
“And soon you won’t even be living here anymore, sweetheart.”
Emma started crying again.
That was when twenty years of military discipline became the only thing keeping me from losing control.
I slowly stood and moved Emma behind me.
Vanessa smirked.
“What are you going to do, soldier?”
I reached beneath my jacket and drew my service pistol, keeping it lowered toward the floor.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared instantly.
She stumbled backward and grabbed Ryan’s arm.
Ryan went pale.
“Emily… what are you doing?”
May you like
I never took my eyes off Vanessa.
Ryan’s face changed.
