Chapter 1

I came home early and heard my two-year-old daughter crying before I even opened the kitchen door.
Not normal crying.
Not tired crying.
She sounded terrified.
“Mommy!”
I dropped my purse and ran toward her.
Then I stopped.
For one second, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.
Lily sat on the floor beside the kitchen table.
A dog chain was looped around her neck.
My mother-in-law, Diane, stood behind her holding the other end.
On the floor was a bowl filled with dirty scraps from dinner.
Diane pushed it toward my daughter with her shoe.
“Eat,” she said coldly.
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Diane pulled the chain.
“She needs discipline.”
Something inside me exploded.
I crossed the kitchen in seconds and ripped the chain from Diane’s hand.
“What are you doing?”
Diane barely reacted.
“She throws tantrums. Ryan agrees she needs consequences.”
I removed the chain from Lily’s neck and pulled my daughter against my chest.
She buried her face against me.
Then Diane smiled.
“She’s dramatic. Just like you.”
I grabbed the bowl and threw the scraps straight into Diane’s face.
Her smile disappeared.
She screamed.
“You crazy—”
I slapped her.
Hard.
She stumbled into the counter.
“You put a dog chain on my child.”
The front door opened.
Ryan rushed inside.
He looked at his mother.
Then at me.
“What the hell happened?”
Diane immediately started crying.
“She attacked me!”
I stared at my husband.
“Your mother chained Lily.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
But not with shock.
With anger at me.
“You hit my mother?”
That was when I knew.
He already knew what Diane had been doing.
Maybe he had even approved it.
Lily clung tighter to me.
Ryan stepped forward.
“Give me Lily.”
“No.”
“Emily.”
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“You’re being unstable again.”
Again?
The word felt strange.
Calculated.
Then I remembered something.
Ryan’s tablet.
He had left it on the kitchen counter that morning.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
Mom: She attacked you yet?
My stomach dropped.
I grabbed the tablet.
Ryan lunged.
“Give me that.”
I stepped away and opened the conversation.
There were hundreds of messages.
Messages about me.
About Lily.
About Lily’s trust fund.
My father had left nearly two million dollars for his granddaughter.
Ryan and Diane knew they couldn’t touch it while I controlled the account.
So they had made a plan.
Record my arguments.
Provoke me.
Make me look dangerous.
Then take Lily.
One message from Ryan made my hands shake.
Once she loses custody, you become Lily’s guardian. Then we control everything.
Diane wiped food from her face.
“You’re misunderstanding.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Ryan rushed toward the phone.
I kicked him away from me.
He crashed against a chair.
Diane suddenly grabbed Lily’s arm.
“Give her to me!”
I shoved Diane against the wall and pulled Lily free.
“Touch my daughter again and you’ll regret it.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Ryan froze.
Diane turned pale.
“What did you do?”
I looked toward the blinking security camera above the refrigerator.
“I didn’t do anything.”
Then the front door burst open.
Two officers entered.
I held Lily against me while they looked around the kitchen.
The chain.
The scraps.
The tablet.
The terrified child.
One officer immediately separated Ryan from us.
The other asked Diane to turn around.
Diane screamed.
“She attacked me!”
“Ma’am, put your hands behind your back.”
Ryan tried to explain.
Then an officer picked up the chain.
Everything changed.
Minutes later, I stood at the doorway holding Lily while officers led Ryan and Diane outside.
Diane twisted around.
“This isn’t over!”
Ryan stared at me with something colder than anger.
“You have no idea what you just started.”
I thought he was threatening me.
I was wrong.
Because when I looked down at the tablet again, another message appeared.
Unknown Number: They got arrested. Move the money tonight.
There was someone else involved.
May you like
And they already knew what had happened inside my house.
