Amazed

Chapter 1

I came home and found my mother forcing my eight-month-pregnant wife’s face into a trash bin.

Emily was on her knees.

One hand protected her stomach while the other clawed at Diane’s wrist.

“Give it to me!” my mother screamed. “You don’t control this family!”

I dropped my keys and ran across the kitchen.

I tore Diane away from Emily so hard that she stumbled into the table.

Then I pulled my wife to her feet.

Emily’s lip was bleeding. Coffee grounds and food scraps clung to her hair.

“Are you hurt?” I asked.

“She disrespected me,” Diane snapped before Emily could answer.

I stared at my mother.

“You attacked my pregnant wife.”

“She stole what belongs to me!”

Emily wiped blood from her mouth.

“You attacked me because I refused to give you our bank card.”

My stomach tightened.

“What bank card?”

“The one connected to our emergency account,” Emily said. “She demanded the PIN.”

Diane lunged at her again.

I stepped between them and shoved my mother back.

She crashed against the counter, knocking over a bowl.

“You ungrateful little snake!” Diane shouted at Emily. “You turned my son against me!”

“No,” I said. “You did that yourself.”

Diane raised her hand as if she planned to slap me.

Something inside me finally broke.

For years, I had excused her insults.

I had ignored the way she entered our home without calling.

I had pretended not to notice when she mocked Emily’s job, her clothes, and even her pregnancy.

But this was different.

I grabbed the trash bin, emptied its contents over Diane’s head, and pushed it into her arms.

“You wanted my pregnant wife treated like garbage,” I said. “Now you know how it feels.”

Her mouth fell open.

“You’ll regret this.”

“Get out.”

“I’m your mother.”

“And Emily is my wife.”

I pushed her toward the front door.

She screamed that I was choosing a stranger over blood.

Emily had been beside me for seven years.

She had worked two jobs when I lost mine.

She had held my hand after my father died.

She was carrying our daughter.

She was not a stranger.

I locked the door after Diane stumbled outside.

Then I called the police.

Diane stood on the porch, pounding the glass and shouting that Emily had attacked her first.

For one frightening second, I wondered whether the officers would believe her.

Then I remembered the camera above the kitchen cabinet.

We had installed it after food and money began disappearing from the house.

I showed the officers everything.

The video captured Diane entering with the spare key I had forgotten she still possessed.

It showed her demanding the bank card.

It showed Emily refusing.

And it showed my mother grabbing Emily by the hair and forcing her toward the trash.

One officer stepped onto the porch.

“Diane Carter, turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

Diane’s face went pale.

“You can’t arrest me. That woman assaulted me!”

“We saw the recording.”

As the officers handcuffed her, she looked straight at me.

“Daniel, defend your mother!”

I held Emily close.

“My family is standing beside me.”

The patrol car disappeared down the street.

I thought the nightmare was over.

Then Emily suddenly gasped.

Her knees weakened.

A dark stain appeared on her dress.

“Daniel,” she whispered, clutching her stomach. “Something’s wrong with the baby.”

My phone buzzed as I caught her.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

You made a terrible mistake.
