Amazed

Chapter 1

I came home early and found my mother-in-law dragging my seventy-year-old mother across the living room floor by her hair.

My mother was crying out in pain.

Her glasses lay broken beneath the coffee table.

Ryan stood three feet away, watching.

He did nothing.

“Let her go!” I screamed.

Diane tightened her fist in Mom’s gray hair.

“She broke into my private files,” she shouted. “This old thief attacked me first!”

Mom struggled to lift one hand.

In it was a large brown envelope.

“Emma,” she gasped. “Don’t let them take Lily.”

My blood went cold.

Ryan moved toward the envelope, but Mom pulled it against her chest.

“Your mom started it,” he said calmly. “She came into our house and went through things that didn’t belong to her.”

“This is my house too.”

“Not for much longer,” Diane said.

She released Mom just long enough to snatch at the envelope.

Mom twisted away.

The papers spilled across the floor.

I saw my name.

I saw Ryan’s signature.

Then I saw the words PETITION FOR EMERGENCY CUSTODY printed across the top of the first page.

Our six-year-old daughter’s school photograph had been clipped to the file.

I picked up another page.

It claimed I suffered from violent emotional episodes.

It said I had abandoned Lily overnight.

It included a statement from a therapist I had never met.

At the bottom was a signature that looked like mine.

But I had never signed it.

“These are forged,” I whispered.

Diane lunged for the papers.

I caught her by the hair and pulled her away from Mom.

She turned and raised her hand.

I slapped her hard.

The sound cracked through the room.

Ryan grabbed my arm from behind.

“You’re proving every word in those papers!” he yelled.

I drove my knee into his stomach.

He stumbled backward, and I shoved him onto the couch.

“You stood there while she attacked my mother because she exposed your plan.”

Ryan’s face changed.

The anger disappeared.

Fear replaced it.

Diane reached for her phone.

“I’m calling the police,” she said. “They’ll see exactly how unstable you are.”

“You don’t need to call them,” Mom whispered.

Sirens sounded outside.

Everyone froze.

Mom looked at me through swollen eyes.

“I called before you arrived.”

Two police officers entered less than a minute later.

Diane immediately began crying.

“She assaulted me!” she screamed, pointing at her cheek. “My daughter-in-law is dangerous. Her mother broke into my private property.”

One officer looked at Mom’s bleeding scalp, broken glasses, and torn blouse.

The other picked up the custody petition.

“Who prepared these documents?” he asked.

Ryan stood slowly.

“Our attorney.”

“Which attorney?”

Ryan said nothing.

Mom reached into her pocket and removed a small digital recorder.

“I recorded everything,” she said.

Diane went pale.

The officer pressed play.

Ryan’s voice filled the room.

Once Emma is declared unstable, the judge will give me emergency custody. Then the house and Lily’s trust will be under my control.

Diane’s voice followed.

Your wife will never see it coming.

The room became silent.

The officers separated us.

Diane screamed that the recording was illegal.

Ryan claimed the documents were only drafts.

Neither explanation helped.

Diane was arrested for assault.

Ryan was arrested after officers discovered that the supposed attorney’s address belonged to an empty office and that the therapist’s signature had been copied from an old medical report.

As the police led him outside, Ryan looked back at me.

“You have no idea what you just started,” he said.

Mom gripped my hand.

Then she leaned closer.

“Emma, there’s something else,” she whispered. “These papers weren’t their whole plan.”
