Chapter 1

I came home early to surprise my 4-year-old daughter on her birthday.
What I saw in my kitchen made me stop cold.
My 11-year-old was standing at the sink, crying while washing a mountain of dirty dishes with one hand.
Her other arm was wrapped around her little sister, who was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.
My older daughter’s hand was red and wrinkled from being in the water too long.
And just a few feet away?
Nearly twenty relatives were laughing, eating cake, drinking wine, and celebrating like nothing was wrong.
Then I heard my mother say:
“Keep washing. The guests are waiting.”
My daughter whispered:
“Grandma… my hand hurts.”
And my mother answered:
“Then use the other one.”
That was when I walked in.
The room went silent.
My 4-year-old reached for me and screamed:
“Mommy!”
I thought forcing my children to serve adults at a birthday party was the worst thing my mother had done.
I was wrong.
Because after I kicked everyone out, I found receipts I had never approved.
Then I checked the money I had been sending my mother every month.
More than $100,000 had passed through her hands.
And when my 11-year-old finally told me what she had overheard Grandma saying about my house, my signature, and a missing document…
I realized that birthday party had never really been about my daughter.
It had been a distraction.
And the person I had trusted most had been planning something behind my back for much longer than I ever imagined.
The worst part?
My daughter looked at me and said:
May you like
“Please don’t tell Grandma I told you.”
That was the moment I knew this had been happening for far longer than one terrible afternoon.
