I Came Home From Work And Found My 7-Year-Old Son Locked Inside Our Dog Kennel. Then My Mother-In-Law Smiled And Told Me Why She Put Him There.
I had worked a double shift at a hospital outside Dallas that Tuesday.
My husband, Michael, was out of town, so his mother, Diane, agreed to watch our son, Noah.
When I pulled into the driveway, the house looked strangely quiet.
Then I heard crying from the backyard.
“Mom!”
I dropped my bag and ran toward the sound.
Noah was sitting inside our large outdoor dog kennel with both hands wrapped around the metal door.
His cheeks were wet with tears.
“Mom, please get me out.”
My stomach dropped.
I grabbed the lock.
“Noah, who did this?”
Before he could answer, Diane stepped onto the patio holding a glass of iced tea.
“I did.”
I stared at her.
“You locked my seven-year-old child in a dog cage?”
“He needed discipline.”
Noah shook his head frantically.
“Grandma said I had to stay there until Dad came home.”
I found the spare key hanging beside the garage door and unlocked the kennel.
Noah threw himself into my arms.
His whole body was trembling.
Diane rolled her eyes.
“You spoil him, Sarah.”
I stood up slowly.
“What did he do?”
“He talked back when I told him to clean my car.”
Noah whispered against my shoulder.
“I said I had homework.”
That was all it took.
I walked toward Diane and held out the kennel key.
She actually laughed.
“What are you going to do, call Michael?”
“No.”
I opened the kennel door again and pointed inside.
Diane’s smile disappeared.
“You cannot be serious.”
“You thought this was an acceptable place for my child.”
She backed away, but I took her arm, guided her inside, and shut the door behind her.
The lock clicked.
Diane immediately grabbed the bars.
“Sarah! Open this right now!”
I pulled Noah close and reached for my phone.
Then Noah suddenly tugged my sleeve and whispered, “Mom… Grandma wasn’t alone when she locked me in here.”
I froze.
“Who was with her?”
