Chapter 1
"I came home from work and found my mother-in-law forcing my seven-year-old daughter to pick food off the floor and eat it—what happened next made my husband freeze in the doorway.
My husband, Ryan, and I had both worked late that evening in Dallas.
The moment we opened the front door, I heard our daughter crying in the kitchen.
“Please, Grandma. I don’t want to.”
I dropped my purse and ran toward the sound.
My daughter, Lily, was kneeling on the floor.
Several pieces of dinner were scattered near her knees.
My mother-in-law, Diane, stood over her pointing at them.
“You dropped it, so you’re going to eat it.”
Lily shook her head through tears.
“It fell on the floor.”
Diane grabbed her wrist.
“Pick it up.”
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
“Get your hands off my daughter!”
Diane turned toward me.
“She needs to learn not to waste food.”
Lily suddenly picked up a piece with trembling fingers.
Diane pointed toward her mouth.
“Eat it.”
I rushed forward and knocked the food from Lily’s hand.
Then I slapped Diane across the face.
Ryan shouted, “Sarah!”
I pulled Lily behind me.
“Your mother was making our daughter eat off the floor!”
Diane held her cheek and stared at me.
“She’s spoiled because of you.”
Ryan stepped between us.
“Mom, what were you thinking?”
Diane suddenly laughed.
“You’re pretending you didn’t know?”
Ryan went silent.
I looked at him.
“What does she mean?”
Lily grabbed my shirt.
“Mom…”
I crouched beside her.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
She looked terrified.
“Grandma does this when you’re at work.”
My stomach dropped.
Diane immediately shouted, “She’s lying!”
But Lily kept talking.
“And when I tell Dad…”
Ryan’s face changed.
I slowly turned toward him.
