Chapter 1

I Came Home From Work and Found My Wife Pouring Dinner Over My Elderly Mother’s Head

I came home early from work and froze when I saw my wife pouring a bowl of hot dinner over my elderly mother’s head.

“Melissa, what the hell are you doing?”

My wife spun around so fast the empty bowl slipped from her hands.

My seventy-four-year-old mother sat at the kitchen table, soaked in gravy and trembling.

“Daniel,” Mom whispered, “please don’t yell.”

That sentence scared me more than anything.

Melissa pointed at her.

“Your mother started this.”

Mom wouldn’t even look at me.

I grabbed a towel and knelt beside her.

“Mom, did this burn you?”

She quietly shook her head.

Melissa crossed her arms.

“She threw away the dinner I made, so I taught her some respect.”

My mother suddenly whispered, “That isn’t what happened.”

Melissa’s face tightened.

“Eleanor, don’t.”

I stood up.

“Don’t what?”

For months, Melissa had told me Mom was becoming difficult since moving into our Dallas home.

She said Mom complained constantly, forgot things, and accused her of stealing.

I believed my wife.

Now I noticed bruises around Mom’s wrist.

“Where did those come from?”

Melissa immediately said, “She fell.”

Mom began crying.

“I didn’t fall.”

The room went completely still.

I turned toward Melissa.

“What did you do to my mother?”

“She’s confused, Daniel.”

Then Mom reached beneath the table and pulled out the little voice recorder my father used before he died.

Melissa went pale.

“I told you to get rid of that.”

I stared at her.

“Why would you care about Dad’s recorder?”

Mom pressed it against her chest.

“Because I’ve been recording what happens after you leave for work.”

Melissa lunged toward her, but I stepped between them.

“Touch her again and see what happens.”

Mom looked up at me with tears running down her cheeks.

Then she said the words that made my stomach drop.

“Son, pouring food on me isn’t the worst thing your wife has done.”
