Chapter 1

I followed my fiancé into a hotel after he told me he was working late—and watched him put his arm around another woman before they disappeared into an elevator together.
My name is Claire, and I was supposed to marry Ethan in six weeks.
That afternoon, he texted me from his office in Chicago.
“Big meeting tonight. Don’t wait up.”
I believed him.
Then, while driving home, I saw his car turn into the entrance of a downtown hotel.
At first, I thought the meeting had moved there.
So I parked across the street.
Ethan stepped out wearing the shirt I had bought him for our engagement photos.
Then a woman climbed out of the passenger side.
She slipped her hand into his.
My stomach dropped.
I followed them into the lobby.
They were laughing beside the elevators.
Then Ethan kissed her.
I couldn’t move.
The woman whispered something into his ear.
He smiled and pressed the button for the top floor.
I finally shouted, “Ethan!”
His entire body stiffened.
He turned around slowly.
“Claire?”
The woman stepped away from him.
I walked toward them.
“You’re supposed to be working.”
Ethan glanced around the lobby.
“This isn’t what you think.”
“You just kissed her.”
The woman suddenly laughed.
“Seriously, Ethan?”
I looked at her.
“You knew about me?”
Her smile disappeared.
“Knew about you?”
Then she turned toward Ethan.
“You told me your fiancée died two years ago.”
Ethan went pale.
I stared at him.
“What did you tell her?”
He grabbed my arm.
“Claire, we need to talk privately.”
I pulled away.
Then the woman opened her purse and removed a diamond ring identical to mine.
“He proposed to me three months ago.”
Before I could answer, the hotel manager walked toward us carrying an envelope.
He looked at Ethan and said, “Mr. Miller, your wife left this at the front desk.”

The woman and I spoke at the same time.
“His wife?”
