Chapter 1

I heard my daughter screaming from the storage room.
Not crying.
Screaming.
“Grandma, please! I’m sorry!”
I dropped the grocery bags and ran.
The storage-room door was half open.
Inside, my mother-in-law, Diane, had both hands around Lily’s arms.
My seven-year-old daughter was barefoot, shaking, and fighting to stay away from an old refrigerator against the wall.
“Get inside,” Diane hissed.
“No!”
Lily kicked against the floor.
Diane pulled harder.
“Grandma, please!”
“What are you doing?”
Diane froze.
Lily turned toward me.
“Mom!”
I crossed the room and ripped her from Diane’s hands.
Then I slapped Diane away from us.
She stumbled into a shelf.
Her face changed from shock to anger.
“She needed discipline.”
“Discipline?”
I held Lily against me.
Her body was trembling.
“She stole food,” Diane snapped.
Lily buried her face against my shoulder.
“I was hungry.”
Those three words nearly broke me.
I had left that morning for work.
My husband Ryan was supposed to be home.
Diane had offered to watch Lily for only two hours.
Now my child looked terrified of her own grandmother.
“What food?” I asked.
Diane folded her arms.
“She took a sandwich without asking.”
“A sandwich?”
“She needs to learn rules.”
“She lives here!”
Diane rolled her eyes.
“That attitude is exactly why she behaves this way.”
I looked at the refrigerator.
It was old.
Unplugged.
Large enough for a child.
The door stood open like a dark mouth.
A terrible thought hit me.
I looked at Lily.
“Baby, did she put you inside?”
Lily stopped breathing for a second.
Then she whispered, “Before.”
My stomach turned.
“How many times?”
Lily held up three fingers.
Diane immediately stepped forward.
“She’s lying.”
Lily flinched.
That was enough.
I carried Lily into the hallway.
Then I turned back.
Diane pointed at me.
“Don’t you dare treat me like some criminal in my son’s house.”
“This is my house too.”
“You married into this family.”
“And Lily is my daughter.”
Diane laughed bitterly.
“That child has controlled Ryan since the day she was born.”
I stared at her.
Then I opened the storage-room door wider.
“You wanted my child trapped in here?”
Diane’s confidence disappeared.
I pushed her backward into the room.
“Emily, don’t be ridiculous.”
“Now feel what she felt.”
I slammed the door.
Then I turned the lock from outside.
Diane immediately began pounding.
“OPEN THIS DOOR!”
Lily stared at me.
I knelt beside her.
“You’re safe.”
“Is Grandma angry?”
“I don’t care.”
I carried Lily upstairs and called the police.
Ten minutes later, two officers entered our house.
Diane was still screaming.
When they unlocked the storage room, she stormed out.
“This woman assaulted me!” Diane shouted. “Arrest her!”
One officer looked between us.
I didn’t argue.
I simply said, “Ask my daughter.”
Lily stood behind my leg.
The officer crouched.
“What happened, sweetheart?”
Lily pointed downstairs.
“She put me in the refrigerator.”
Diane’s face went pale.
“She’s confused.”
Lily shook her head.
“She did it before.”
The second officer walked toward the refrigerator.
Then he stopped.
“What’s this?”
Something was scratched into the inside of the door.
I moved closer.
Three small sets of lines.
Like someone had been counting.
Lily whispered behind me.
“I made one every time she locked me in.”
The room went silent.
Then the front door opened.
Ryan walked in.
He looked at the police.
He looked at his mother.
Then he looked at me.
“What happened?”
Diane ran toward him.
“Ryan, thank God. Your wife has lost her mind.”
Ryan caught his mother by the shoulders.
“What did Emily do?”
Diane pointed at me.
“She locked me in that room.”
Ryan’s expression hardened.
He looked at me.
“You did what?”
Before I could answer, Lily stepped forward.
“Daddy.”
Ryan turned.
Lily was crying again.
“Grandma put me in the refrigerator.”
Ryan stared at her.
His face went completely still.
Then Lily added one sentence that changed everything.

“And Daddy… Grandma said you knew.”
