Chapter 1

I Heard My Daughter Screaming From the Storage Room—Then I Found My Mother-in-Law Trying to Lock Her Inside an Old Refrigerator

I was helping clean up after our family restaurant closed in Chicago when I suddenly heard my seven-year-old daughter screaming downstairs.

“Mommy! Please!”

I dropped everything and ran toward the basement storage room.

Her cries became louder with every step.

When I reached the bottom, I froze.

My mother-in-law, Diane, was standing beside an old refrigerator with both hands on the door.

My daughter, Lily, was inside.

Her tiny hands were pushing desperately against it.

“GET AWAY FROM HER!”

Diane jumped and released the door.

I yanked it open and pulled Lily into my arms.

She was shaking so badly she could barely speak.

“Mommy, Grandma said she was going to leave me in there.”

I held her against my chest.

Then I looked at Diane.

“What were you doing?”

Diane rolled her eyes.

“She spilled the soup.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“She knocked over an entire pot after I told her not to touch anything.”

Lily cried harder.

“It was an accident, Mommy.”

Diane pointed at her.

“She needs to learn consequences.”

“You tried to lock a seven-year-old inside a refrigerator over spilled soup?”

“It wasn’t even plugged in.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“That doesn’t make this okay!”

Diane stepped closer and whispered, “You spoil that girl because she isn’t Daniel’s biological child.”

Everything inside me snapped.

I handed Lily to one of the employees who had rushed downstairs.

Then I turned back and slapped Diane hard across the face.

The entire room went silent.

Diane touched her cheek in disbelief.

“You hit me?”

“You terrified my daughter.”

Suddenly my husband, Daniel, appeared at the top of the stairs.

His mother immediately started crying.

“Daniel! Your wife attacked me!”

He rushed downstairs.

For one horrible second, I thought he was going to defend her.

Then Lily looked at him and whispered something that made him stop.

“Daddy… Grandma said Mommy will never find out what happened to the other little girl.”

Diane’s face went completely white.

I slowly turned toward her.

“What other little girl?”
