Chapter 1

I heard my five-year-old daughter screaming in the kitchen—then I ran in and saw my wife dragging her across the floor by her hair.
For one second, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
“Rachel!”
My wife froze and released her.
Sophie crawled toward me, sobbing.
“Daddy, please don’t leave me again.”
I lifted her into my arms.
Her scalp was red, and strands of hair clung to Rachel’s fingers.
Rachel pointed angrily at Sophie.
“She threw another tantrum.”
“A tantrum?”
My hands began shaking.
“You dragged a five-year-old across the floor.”
Rachel rolled her eyes.
“You have no idea what I deal with while you’re at work.”
Sophie buried her face against my shoulder.
“She does worse when you’re gone.”
Rachel’s expression changed instantly.
“Stop lying!”
She stepped forward and grabbed Sophie’s arm.
I knocked her hand away.
“Don’t touch her.”
Rachel slapped me across the face.
Then she reached for Sophie again.
I placed my daughter safely on the couch and turned back.
Rachel raised her hand.
I caught her wrist and slapped her hard across the cheek.
She stumbled against the kitchen counter.
“You hit me!” she screamed.
“You’ve been beating my daughter.”
Rachel lunged at Sophie.
Something inside me snapped.
I grabbed Rachel by the hair and dragged her across the same kitchen floor where she had dragged my child.
“Daniel! Let me go!”
“Sophie begged you to stop too.”
I pulled Rachel to the front door and threw her onto the porch.
She tried to push her way back inside.
I shoved her away.
“You will never touch my daughter again.”
Rachel screamed and pounded on the locked door.
Minutes later, two police officers arrived.
She tried to run across the yard, but they caught her and forced her hands behind her back.
Sophie watched from my arms as Rachel was placed in the patrol car.
“Daddy… do you believe me now?”
May you like
I kissed my daughter’s forehead.
“I believe you—and I’ll never leave you alone with her again.”
