Amazed

Chapter 1

I Hid the Fact That I Was a 9-Year-Old Martial Arts Champion—Until a 15-Year-Old Bully Cornered Me in Class and Made One Very Bad Decision

My name is Lily Carter, and when I was nine, almost nobody at my Chicago school knew what I did after class.

Three nights a week, my dad took me to a martial arts gym across town.

I had trained since I was four.

But Dad always told me, “Real skill doesn’t need attention.”

So at school, I stayed quiet.

I never mentioned my medals.

I never showed anyone the videos of my competitions.

Then Tyler arrived.

He was fifteen, much bigger than everyone in our mixed-age after-school class, and he seemed to enjoy frightening younger kids.

On his second day, he knocked a boy’s books onto the floor and laughed.

On his third, he took my friend Emma’s snack and threw it in the trash.

I told him, “Leave her alone.”

Tyler slowly turned toward me.

“What did the little princess say?”

“Give Emma her stuff back.”

The whole room went silent.

Tyler walked over until he towered above me.

“You think you’re tough?”

“No.”

That answer made him laugh.

Then he grabbed my backpack and dumped everything onto the floor.

“Pick it up.”

I knelt down calmly.

He kicked one of my notebooks away.

Emma whispered, “Lily, don’t.”

Tyler reached for my shoulder.

That was his mistake.

I moved his hand away, stepped aside, and used his own momentum to send him stumbling harmlessly onto the padded activity-room floor.

Everyone gasped.

Tyler jumped back up, furious.

“You got lucky!”

He rushed at me again.

This time, I blocked him, turned, and controlled his arm until he had no choice but to stop moving.

“Let go of me!”

“Say you’ll leave the younger kids alone.”

His face turned red.

Then the classroom door opened.

Our teacher froze.

Tyler immediately shouted, “She attacked me!”

I released him and stepped back.

Before I could explain, a man standing behind the teacher suddenly stared at me.

He was Tyler’s father.

But he wasn’t looking at his son.

He was looking at the small martial arts patch that had fallen out of my backpack.

Then his face changed.

“Wait…”

He picked it up slowly.

“You’re Lily Carter?”

I didn’t answer.

He looked at Tyler and whispered, “Son… do you have any idea who her father is?”
