Chapter 1

I saw my husband’s mistress standing outside our Dallas home—and seconds later, my car hit her before I even understood what I had done.
I slammed on the brakes as Vanessa fell onto the lawn.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Then I threw open the door and ran toward her.
“Vanessa!”
She was conscious, staring at me in shock.
“You’re insane!”
My hands were shaking as I grabbed my phone.
But I didn’t call my husband first.
I called 911.
Then, while help was coming, I dialed Ryan.
He answered casually.
“Emily? I’m in a meeting.”
“No, you’re not.”
Silence.
I looked at Vanessa sitting on the grass.
“Your girlfriend is outside our house.”
Ryan’s breathing changed.
“What happened?”
“She was standing in front of my car.”
Vanessa suddenly shouted, “Tell him why I came here!”
I stared at her.
“Why did you come here?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Because your husband has been lying to both of us.”
Ryan immediately yelled through the phone.
“Vanessa, shut up!”
That was when I realized she had a suitcase beside the driveway.
My stomach dropped.
“Were you moving into my house?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was leaving him.”
Ryan suddenly said, “Emily, don’t listen to her.”
Vanessa pulled an envelope from her purse.
“You should ask your husband why your name is on these documents.”
Ryan’s voice became frantic.
“Do not give her that envelope.”
I stared at my phone.
“What documents?”
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“The ones proving Ryan married me three years before he married you.”
I couldn’t breathe.

Then she said something even worse.
“And Emily… your father already knows.”
