Amazed

Chapter 9

Rachel survived because Eli smelled the bitterness before she finished the water.

Doctors found the same sedative used on Emma.

Grace Holloway had entered the hospital with an executive access badge issued by Laura’s office.

She disappeared before police sealed the exits.

Detective Kim questioned Laura from her guarded room.

Laura insisted she had not spoken to Grace in days.

Michael woke after surgery and gave the same answer.

But Rachel looked terrified when I mentioned Grace’s name.

“She worked for Evelyn,” Rachel said.

“I know.”

“No, Daniel. She did more than manage schedules.”

“What do you mean?”

“Grace arranged Eli’s adoption. She paid Dr. Hale. She cleaned up the crash.”

I felt another piece of the truth fall into place.

“Did my mother order all of it?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

“Grace stopped taking orders.”

Rachel explained that Evelyn had wanted the scandal hidden, but never asked anyone to kill her.

When Evelyn discovered Grace and Hale had staged the crash, she tried to confess.

Grace threatened to expose decades of corporate fraud.

My mother remained silent.

Then she died from what everyone believed was a stroke.

“Was Mother drugged too?” I asked.

Rachel nodded.

“I heard Grace admit it to Victoria.”

The person behind everything was not Victoria.

Victoria was cruel, jealous, and willing.

But Grace had designed the machinery that allowed cruelty to disappear behind legal documents and medical records.

“She is going after the company evidence,” I said.

Kim immediately called the federal team at Mercer headquarters.

No one answered.

We drove downtown with four police vehicles.

Smoke rose from the building before we arrived.

Fire alarms screamed.

Employees who had been helping investigators poured through the lobby doors.

“The archive,” I said.

Firefighters entered the underground level.

Kim stopped me from following.

Then my phone rang from an unknown number.

Grace’s voice was calm.

“You inherited your father’s stubbornness.”

“Where are you?”

“Watching thirty years of sacrifice turn into smoke.”

“You poisoned Rachel.”

“I tried to spare her another public scandal.”

“You tried to kill her.”

“Words become dramatic when police are listening.”

“You killed my mother.”

Silence.

Then Grace sighed.

“Evelyn wanted to confess. Confession would have destroyed thousands of innocent employees.”

“So you murdered her for the company.”

“I protected your family.”

“You stole a child.”

“I prevented a scandal.”

“You buried another child alive.”

“That was Victoria’s mistake.”

“Where are you?”

Grace laughed.

“Ask Emma.”

The call ended.

I contacted Dr. Ortiz.

Emma and Eli were safe.

But when Ortiz asked Emma about Grace, my daughter remembered something.

“Grandma Grace had a blue house,” Emma said over the phone.

“Where?”

“Near the water. Victoria took me there when I got sleepy.”

“Do you remember anything else?”

“There was a big red boat outside.”

Police searched property records.

Grace owned no blue house.

But Evelyn Mercer’s estate still controlled an unused waterfront property on Whidbey Island.

A satellite image showed a blue house and a red fishing boat.

Kim arranged a helicopter.

Rachel insisted on coming.

“No,” I said.

“Grace kept me prisoner for years. I can identify the rooms.”

“You were just poisoned.”

“And Emma was nearly buried. We do not get to hide from this anymore.”

We landed near the property shortly before sunset.

The blue house appeared abandoned.

The red boat rocked beside the dock.

Officers searched the main floor.

No Grace.

Rachel led us to a pantry.

Behind the shelves was a narrow staircase descending underground.

At the bottom, we found a medical room.

There were restraints on the bed.

Boxes of sedatives lined the wall.

Photographs covered a desk.

Rachel.

Michael.

Eli.

Emma.

Me.

Grace had documented our family for years.

Kim found a computer containing copies of every destroyed file.

“She did not burn the evidence,” Kim said. “She stole it.”

“Why keep it here?”

“Leverage.”

Rachel opened a cabinet.

Inside were letters written by my mother before her death.

The first was addressed to the Seattle Police Department.

Evelyn confessed to hiding Eli’s birth.

She admitted paying Rachel’s parents.

She also described suspicious financial transfers made by Grace and Dr. Hale.

The letter was never sent.

The second was addressed to me.

Daniel,

By the time you read this, you may hate me.

You should.

I believed our name mattered more than a child.

Grace told me she could make the problem disappear.

I pretended not to understand what she meant.

That cowardice cost Rachel her freedom and Eli his family.

Protect Emma from Victoria.

She has learned from Grace that love is only another weakness to exploit.

I lowered the letter.

My mother had known Victoria was dangerous.

She still allowed Victoria into my life.

Rachel touched my arm.

“We need to leave.”

A lock clicked upstairs.

Smoke began flowing through the ventilation system.

Grace had trapped us underground.

Kim called the officers outside.

No response.

The house’s signal jammer had activated.

Flames appeared at the top of the stairs.

Grace was burning another building with us inside.

Rachel pointed toward the medical room.

“There was another exit.”

We searched the walls.

Behind a steel cabinet, I found a narrow tunnel.

Kim and the officers moved first.

Rachel followed.

I carried the evidence computer.

The tunnel ended near the shoreline.

We climbed out beneath the dock.

The police helicopter was still in the field, but its pilot was unconscious.

The red boat’s engine started.

Grace stood at the controls.

She had changed into a dark raincoat.

The boat pulled away from the dock.

Kim fired at the engine.

Grace ducked.

I saw a small figure inside the cabin.

“Someone is with her!”

Rachel looked through the window.

Her face changed.

“Michael.”

My brother was supposed to be in a guarded hospital room.

Grace had taken him.

A second figure appeared beside him.

Laura.

Grace had freed both of them.

Or they had joined her.

The red boat accelerated into the dark water.

Coast Guard vessels responded from the mainland.

Kim found a second boat tied beyond the reeds.

We followed.

Waves struck the hull as night fell.

The red boat headed toward open water.

Grace called my phone again.

“Turn back.”

“Release Michael and Laura.”

“They came willingly.”

“Why?”

“Because they finally understand what happens if those records become public.”

“You’re holding them at gunpoint.”

“Family loyalty always looks like force to outsiders.”

Rachel took the phone.

“You stole my life.”

Grace was silent.

Rachel continued.

“You told me my children had forgotten me. You said Daniel hated me. You made me doubt my own name.”

“I kept you alive.”

“You kept me alive because you needed my signature.”

“You should be grateful.”

“I will be grateful when you can never touch another child.”

Grace ended the call.

The red boat changed direction.

It headed toward a rocky inlet.

Kim recognized the danger first.

“She’s going to crash it.”

The boat struck the rocks.

An explosion lit the water.

Rachel screamed.

We reached the wreckage minutes later.

Michael floated near a piece of wood.

I pulled him aboard.

He coughed and opened his eyes.

“Laura,” he gasped.

Officers found Laura clinging to the rocks.

Grace was nowhere in sight.

“Did she die in the explosion?” I asked.

Michael shook his head.

“She jumped before impact.”

“Why were you with her?”

“She had a police officer bring us out of the hospital.”

“Another corrupt officer?”

“No. He thought we were being transferred.”

“Why didn’t you resist?”

“Grace said she had Eli.”

My anger softened slightly.

“She lied.”

“I know that now.”

Laura was lifted onto the boat.

She held a waterproof drive against her chest.

“I took this from Grace,” she said.

“What is it?”

“Every payment. Every fake death certificate. Every person she bribed.”

Kim took it.

“Then it is over.”

“No,” Laura said. “Grace has one more file.”

“What file?”

“The original trust.”

I looked at her.

“Why does it matter now?”

“Because Evelyn did not leave Mercer Medical to Emma and Eli.”

“Who did she leave it to?”

Laura stared at Rachel.

“To her.”

Rachel stepped back.

“That’s impossible.”

Laura shook her head.

“Evelyn transferred controlling interest to Rachel before she died. Grace forged the version we have been using.”

The entire company belonged to the woman it had helped imprison.

A Coast Guard officer shouted from the bow.

Someone was swimming near the cliffs.

A spotlight moved across the water.

Grace climbed onto the rocks.

She held a gun in one hand and a waterproof envelope in the other.

Inside that envelope was the original trust.

Rachel looked at me.

May you like

“She is going to destroy it.”

Then she jumped into the water.
