Chapter 1

**I went to my ex-husband’s house to pick up our daughter and found her crying with bruises across her face while my former mother-in-law calmly sipped wine on the couch.**
**Eight-year-old Lily was on her knees, scrubbing the living-room floor.**
**“Mommy!”**
**She dropped the mop the second she saw me.**
**Margaret didn’t even stand up.**
**She raised her wineglass and snapped, “Will you stop crying?”**
**I stared at the marks on Lily’s cheeks and arms.**
**“What happened to her?”**
**Margaret rolled her eyes.**
**“She’s dramatic.”**
**Lily ran into my arms.**
**“Grandma gets mad when I don’t clean fast enough.”**
**My whole body went cold.**
**“You made my daughter clean your house?”**
**Margaret smiled.**
**“She lives here. She should make herself useful.”**
**Then she ordered Lily to pick the mop back up.**
**I walked straight across the room and slapped Margaret.**
**“My daughter is not your maid.”**
**Her wineglass nearly slipped from her hand.**
**Before she could respond, my ex-husband Ryan stormed downstairs.**
**“What the hell are you doing?”**
**“Look at your daughter’s face!”**
**Instead of looking at Lily, Ryan stepped beside his mother.**
**“You just hit my mom.”**
**“She’s been hurting our child.”**
**Margaret immediately started crying.**
**“She attacked me for disciplining Lily.”**
**Ryan turned and slapped me across the face.**
**Lily screamed, “Daddy, stop!”**
**Something inside me snapped.**
**When Ryan lunged toward me again, I jumped onto the heavy coffee table for leverage, pivoted, and kicked him hard across the mouth.**
**He crashed onto the rug and went still, a single tooth skittering across the floor without blood.**
**Margaret’s face went completely white.**
**I grabbed Lily, called 911, and told the dispatcher exactly what I had found.**
**Then Lily pointed toward the bookshelf.**
**“Mommy… Grandma forgot about Daddy’s camera.”**
**Ryan’s eyes opened.**
**Margaret stopped breathing.**
**The camera had recorded Lily cleaning, Margaret threatening her, Ryan striking me—and everything that happened before I arrived.**
**Sirens were already approaching when Margaret suddenly whispered, “Ryan, delete last Tuesday before they see it.”**
**I looked at her.**
**“What happened last Tuesday?”**
**Lily tightened her arms around me.**

**Then she whispered six words that made even Ryan turn pale.**
**“Grandma wasn’t alone that day, Mommy.”**
