Chapter 9

Voss spread his arms as if presenting a lecture.

“Your father wanted control without visible violence.”

Luca kept his eyes on him.

“So he approved the drugs?”

“Not initially.”

Voss smiled.

“He approved surveillance. Dependency. Psychological conditioning.”

Elena looked sick.

Voss continued.

“But Vittorio lacked imagination.”

“You caused the crash.”

“Yes.”

The word was calm.

Almost proud.

“I needed a medical event serious enough to justify permanent supervision.”

Maya stared at him.

“You hurt my dad because he wouldn’t do what you wanted.”

Voss looked at her.

“Adults would call it strategy.”

Maya shook her head.

“I call it stupid.”

Elena almost smiled despite everything.

Voss’s face tightened.

Luca saw the weakness.

Ego.

Always ego.

“What was Phase Two?”

Voss’s gaze returned to Maya.

“A cleaner version.”

Luca’s entire body tensed.

“No accident. No visible injury. Just carefully measured neurological suppression beginning gradually.”

Elena lunged.

The guard caught her.

“You monster!”

Voss ignored her.

“Maya would remain physically capable but emotionally dependent. Anxiety. Fatigue. Tremors. Eventually she would believe she needed constant medical supervision.”

Luca’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“Why?”

“Because Moretti Holdings will eventually belong to her.”

Benjamin stood behind Luca now.

“And whoever controls the heir controls the empire.”

Luca looked over his shoulder.

Benjamin smiled.

“You understand.”

“Yes.”

Luca suddenly drove his elbow into Benjamin’s stomach.

Benjamin folded.

Samuel emerged from a side office and tackled the guard holding Elena.

Everything happened at once.

Maya ran.

Voss grabbed her shoulder.

Luca crossed the distance faster than anyone expected.

His weak right leg nearly gave out.

He kept moving.

Voss raised the syringe.

Luca caught his wrist.

For twelve years, he had imagined confronting the man who told him his body was broken.

Now their faces were inches apart.

Voss whispered, “Without me, you would never have survived.”

Luca twisted his wrist.

The syringe fell.

“No.”

He shoved Voss against the conference table.

“I survived you.”

Elena pulled Maya away.

Samuel pinned the guard.

Benjamin crawled toward the elevator.

The doors opened.

He smiled.

Then stopped.

Federal agents stood inside.

“Benjamin Cole,” one announced, “don’t move.”

Benjamin’s face collapsed.

Agents flooded the floor.

Voss stared around in disbelief.

“How?”

Maya pointed at the security camera.

“You talk too much.”

For the first time, Luca laughed.

Voss was handcuffed.

Benjamin was arrested.

The guards surrendered.

Then Margaret stepped from the stairwell.

Agents immediately aimed weapons.

“Hands where we can see them!”

She raised both hands.

“I came voluntarily.”

Luca stared.

“Why?”

“To testify.”

“Against whom?”

Margaret looked toward the elevator.

“Everyone.”

Another elevator opened.

Vittorio emerged.

No guards.

No lawyer.

Just Luca’s father.

Agents turned toward him.

Vittorio raised his hands.

Luca stared.

“You came.”

Vittorio looked at Maya.

“Yes.”

Maya stood beside Elena.

“You’re the bad grandpa.”

Several agents looked away, hiding reactions.

Vittorio almost smiled.

“That may be accurate.”

Luca stepped between him and Maya.

“You don’t speak to her.”

Vittorio nodded.

Then he looked at the federal agent in charge.

“My name is Vittorio Moretti. I am prepared to surrender and provide full access to every remaining account.”

Margaret’s mouth fell open.

Voss shouted from across the room.

“You coward!”

Vittorio looked at him.

“You touched my granddaughter.”

“You built this!”

“Yes.”

Vittorio’s voice was flat.

“And tonight I end it.”

Luca shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“You don’t get to end it.”

Vittorio frowned.

Luca walked closer.

“You started it. You fed it. You watched people suffer while calling it legacy.”

He pointed toward the agents.

“They end it.”

Vittorio studied his son.

Then nodded.

“You are stronger than I expected.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“That’s because you spent your life confusing obedience with strength.”

Agents handcuffed Vittorio.

As he was led away, Teresa suddenly appeared from the stairwell.

She had followed Margaret.

“Luca!”

He turned.

His mother rushed toward him.

This time, nobody stopped her.

She held his face in both hands.

“My son.”

Luca broke.

Fourteen years of grief.

Twelve years of helplessness.

One impossible week.

He hugged his mother.

Then Maya joined them.

Elena wrapped her arms around all three.

For the first time, Luca thought the nightmare might actually be ending.

Then Samuel approached holding Voss’s recovered tablet.

His expression was grim.

“Luca.”

Luca looked at him.

“What now?”

Samuel turned the screen around.

Project Heir contained more than Maya’s file.

There were thirty-seven children listed.

May you like

And beside six names was one word.

ACTIVE.
