Amazed

Chapter 5

The police arrived at 9:17 p.m.

Two officers. One woman, one man. They stood in the doorway of Maya’s hospital room, polite but professional, and I knew the moment they walked in that nothing would ever be simple again.

Maya was curled up in the hospital bed, IV in her arm, staring at the ceiling. She looked smaller than ever.

I sat beside her and held her hand while the female officer—Officer Torres—spoke gently.

“We need to ask you some questions, Maya,” she said. “Only if you feel up to it. You don’t have to be afraid. We are here to help.”

Maya didn’t look at her. She squeezed my hand so hard it hurt.

“Can my mom stay?” she whispered.

“Of course,” Officer Torres said.

And so Maya told them.

She told them about the visits. About the times Robert sent Mark over to bring things or check on us while he was working late. About how it started small—touching her arm, her shoulder, “accidentally” brushing past her in the hallway. About how he told her she was pretty, that she was special, that she was more grown-up than the other kids her age.

Then she told them how it got worse. How he threatened her. How he said if she told, nobody would believe her. How he said her father would send her away and that she would be all alone.

She told them through quiet, steady sobs, and I sat there and held her hand while my heart broke into a thousand jagged pieces.

Officer Torres took notes. She never interrupted. She never judged. When Maya finished, she covered her notebook and nodded gently.

“Thank you, Maya,” she said. “Thank you for telling us. That took great courage.”

The male officer—Officer Hale—spoke up then.

“We will file charges immediately,” he said. “An arrest warrant will be issued. We will find Mark Thorne. And we will make sure he faces every consequence.”

My stomach twisted.

“Where is he?” I asked.

“That is what we need to ask you,” Officer Hale said. “Has he been in contact with you today? Does he know Maya is here?”

I thought of Robert. Walking out. Driving away. “I don’t know,” I said. “Her father left earlier. He is Mark’s brother. He was... upset. He may have called him.”

Both officers exchanged a look.

“We will need to speak with your husband as well,” Officer Torres said.

“Go ahead,” I said. “But I doubt he will tell you the truth. He would rather believe a lie his brother tells than the truth his own daughter screams.”

After they left, Maya fell into a fitful sleep. I sat in the chair beside her bed, watching the numbers on the monitor blink, watching the door.

At nearly midnight, my phone buzzed.

Robert.

I stepped out into the hallway to answer.

“Did you call the police?” he said. No hello. No concern. Just cold, sharp accusation.

“Yes,” I said. “I did.”

“You ruined everything,” he said. His voice was shaking. “Mark says she is lying. He says she has a crush on him and got confused and made up a story because she got scared. He says you are putting words in her mouth. He says you have always hated him and this is your way of getting rid of him.”

I laughed. It came out sharp and bitter.

“And you believe him?” I said. “You believe your brother over your own daughter?”

“He is family!” Robert shouted. “And Maya is fifteen! She is dramatic! She lies! She lied about being sick for months!”

“She was dying!” I shouted back. “She was literally dying inside and you called her a liar! And now she has been violated and hurt and you are standing there defending the man who did it! What is wrong with you, Robert? What kind of man chooses his brother over his child?”

“The kind who knows his brother!” Robert shot back. “The kind who knows what lies do to a family! If this gets out—if people hear this—we are ruined! Our name! Our reputation! Everything we have built!”

“Our reputation?” I said, stunned. “You care about your reputation while Maya lies in a hospital bed fighting for her life? You are disgusting. You are a disgrace. And I swear to you, Robert—if you help Mark disappear. If you warn him. If you protect him in any way... I will make sure everyone knows exactly what you did. Everyone. Your boss. Your friends. Your church. I will burn your precious reputation to the ground.”

“You wouldn’t dare,” he said.

“Try me,” I said. “I have nothing left to lose. And you... you have everything to hide.”

Silence stretched between us.

“Where are you?” I asked. “Are you with him?”

Robert didn’t answer.

“Robert,” I said. “Tell me you are not with him.”

“I need to think,” he said. “I need to sort this out.”

And then he hung up.

I stared at the phone. A cold, sinking feeling settled in my chest.

Robert was with Mark.

I walked back into Maya’s room. She was still asleep. Her face was pale, her breathing shallow.

I looked at my sleeping daughter. And then I looked at the phone in my hand.

If Robert was protecting Mark... then Mark was on the run. And if Mark was running... he might decide to come say one last goodbye. Or threaten her. Or finish what he started.

Fear gripped me.

I walked to the door. I locked it. I pushed the heavy chair against the handle.

Then I sat beside Maya’s bed. And I waited.
