Amazed

Chapter 1

My husband and I came home from work and found our eight-year-old daughter on her knees, picking food off the dining room floor while my mother-in-law watched—so I crossed the room and slapped her.

My name is Sarah, and my husband Daniel and I live outside Chicago with our daughter, Lily.

Daniel’s mother, Diane, had been staying with us for two weeks.

That evening, we came home earlier than expected.

The house was strangely quiet.

Then I heard Lily crying in the dining room.

“Mommy…”

I dropped my purse and ran toward her.

Lily was kneeling beside the table.

Pieces of chicken, rice, and vegetables were scattered across the hardwood floor.

“Lily, what happened?”

Before she could answer, Diane spoke from behind her.

“She wasted perfectly good food.”

I stared at my mother-in-law.

“What?”

Diane pointed at the floor.

“She complained about dinner, so I taught her not to be ungrateful.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did you make her do?”

Diane shrugged.

“I told her she could eat what she dropped.”

My stomach turned.

Lily whispered, “Grandma pushed my plate down.”

Diane snapped, “Stop lying.”

Then she grabbed Lily’s shoulder.

“Keep picking it up.”

Something inside me broke.

I pulled Lily away from her.

Then I slapped Diane across the face.

The sound echoed through the room.

Daniel froze.

Diane stared at me in disbelief.

“You just hit me?”

“You humiliated my daughter.”

“She needed discipline!”

Daniel stepped between us.

“Mom, pack your things.”

Diane suddenly laughed.

“You’re throwing me out because of that child?”

“That child is my daughter.”

Diane’s expression changed.

Then she pointed at Lily.

“Maybe you should ask your wife why I punished her.”

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Diane walked to a cabinet and pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this hidden in Lily’s backpack.”

Lily suddenly screamed, “Grandma, no!”

Daniel took the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Lily standing beside a man neither of us recognized.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Daniel read it once.

Then again.

His hands started shaking.

He slowly looked at me.

“Sarah… why does this man say Lily is his daughter?”
