Chapter 9

I did not speak to my mother for the rest of the night.
She stayed.
I stayed silent.
It felt cruel.
But I needed silence more than I needed explanations.
The next morning, she brought the letter.
It was sealed inside a clear evidence sleeve because Detective Torres had ordered her not to touch it again.
My name was written across the front in my father’s handwriting.
EMILY.
My hands trembled.
Torres had photographed and documented everything before allowing me to read it.
I unfolded the paper.
My father’s words pulled me backward five years.
Emily,
If you’re reading this, someone in our family tried to kill me.
I stopped.
“I can’t.”
Mom sat across the room.
“Yes, you can.”
I kept reading.
My father wrote that Mark had been stealing company money.
He had discovered false invoices and hidden accounts.
But there was more.
Mark had also been secretly borrowing against assets connected to my trust.
My father planned to remove him as trustee.
Then came Ryan’s name.
I froze.
Ryan and I had only been dating then.
Dad wrote that Ryan had asked strange questions about my inheritance.
He warned me not to marry anyone who cared more about what I owned than who I was.
Tears blurred the page.
At the bottom was one final paragraph.
If anything happens to me, trust your mother. She will make mistakes because she loves too hard, but she will never sell you for comfort.
I lowered the letter.
Mom was crying.
“Why didn’t you give me this?”
“Because you were grieving.”
“That wasn’t your decision.”
“I know.”
“And then I got engaged.”
“I was going to tell you.”
“But?”
“Ryan found out I had concerns about him. You accused me of trying to control your life.”
I remembered.
We had screamed at each other.
I told her I never wanted to see her again.
Ryan held me afterward.
He told me I had done the right thing.
Now I understood why.
“He separated us.”
“Yes.”
“But you let him.”
Mom closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
I hated that answer.
And somehow I respected it.
No excuse.
No command.
Just yes.
Detective Torres entered.
“Mark has decided to cooperate.”
My head snapped up.
“In exchange for what?”
“His attorney is negotiating.”
“Is he admitting what happened to Dad?”
“He admits he followed your father aggressively and caused the crash.”
My chest ached.
“Ryan?”
“Mark says Ryan discovered evidence two years later.”
“And blackmailed him.”
“Yes.”
“What about my money?”
“Ryan threatened to expose Mark unless Mark helped him access the trust.”
It was worse than greed.
They had fed on each other’s crimes.
“How long could Ryan go to prison?”
“That depends on charges, plea negotiations, and what prosecutors can prove.”
I looked through the NICU window.
Grace was sleeping.
For weeks I had worried about whether I had chosen the right stroller.
Meanwhile my husband had been stealing from me and blackmailing the man responsible for my father’s death.
Life could hide monsters behind ordinary mornings.
Three days later, doctors finally let me hold Grace against my chest.
I cried before the nurse even placed her there.
“She knows you,” Mom whispered.
Grace opened her tiny eyes.
“Hi, baby.”
Her fingers moved against my gown.
For the first time, I felt the future instead of the past.
Then Detective Torres entered.
I almost laughed.
“You really know how to ruin peaceful moments.”
She smiled.
“This time I brought something good.”
“What?”
“We recovered a large portion of the stolen money.”
My mouth fell open.
“How?”
“Accounts Ryan thought we wouldn’t find.”
I exhaled.
Not because I cared about being rich.
Because that money had been my father’s final protection.
Torres continued.
“And prosecutors approved additional charges.”
“Against Ryan?”
“And Diane.”
Mom looked surprised.
“For the assault?”
“For the assault, intimidation, and conduct related to the financial scheme. The exact case will be sorted out in court.”
I held Grace tighter.
“Good.”
Then Torres’s expression changed.
“There is one more thing.”
I groaned.
“There’s always one more thing.”
“This one concerns your house.”
“Ryan’s house.”
“No.”
She placed a document in front of me.
“The deed was purchased using funds traced back to your trust.”
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
“It means Ryan may have spent years telling you that you owned nothing.”
Torres smiled slightly.
“But legally, he may have bought that house with money he stole from you.”
I looked at my mother.
Then at Grace.
For months, Ryan had threatened to throw me out whenever I challenged him.

Now the truth had finally arrived.
He was the one who might be losing everything.
