Chapter 6

The next forty-eight hours were a blur.
My father contacted federal investigators. They were interested—very interested—but they needed proof before they could act. Proof only Lauren had.
I called the burner number she’d left. A dozen times. It rang and rang. Voicemail box full. No answer.
On the third day, she finally called back.
I was sitting at the kitchen table, staring at bank statements, when my phone buzzed. Unknown number.
I answered fast.
“Lauren?”
Her voice came in a whisper, shaky and distorted, like she was hiding in a closet.
“Don’t say names. They’re tracing calls. I have ninety seconds.”
“Where are you?” I said. “We need to meet. We need the evidence. They’re going to hurt you.”
“They already tried,” she said. Voice cracking. “Someone broke into my motel room last night. Tore everything apart. They’re looking for the files. If they find me—”
“Come to my parents’ house. It’s secure. Police detail. FBI can protect you.”
Lauren laughed, sharp and brittle. “Police? Half the money goes right back to people in uniform, Sarah. Don’t you get it? Daniel didn’t work alone. He was the smallest piece. If I show up with everything… I won’t live to testify.”
“Then what do we do?”
Silence. Heavy and long.
“I split the files,” she said finally. “Copied everything. Put half somewhere safe. If I’m not there to say where… the files go public. All of them. Names, dates, transfers, everything. The other half… I left a trail. Clues you can follow. But you have to promise me something.”
“Anything.”
“Make Daniel pay,” she said. “Make sure none of them ever see freedom again. And… take care of this baby. If anything happens to me.”
My throat tightened. “Lauren, come in person. Let us protect you.”
“I can’t.” Her voice dropped to a terrified breath. “They’re outside. I have to go. Check the courthouse. The marriage license office in Las Vegas. Look for the name on the second witness. That’s your first clue. And Sarah—trust no one. Not even the police. Not even your lawyer. Especially not your lawyer.”
The line went dead.
I called back immediately.
Straight to disconnected.
My hands shook as I put the phone down.
Check the courthouse. Las Vegas. Second witness.
And trust no one.
I looked up to see my father standing in the doorway. He’d heard everything. His face was grim.
“We leave for Las Vegas tonight,” he said. “But Sarah—her warning about trusting no one. That includes me too, until we know for certain who’s involved.”
I stared at him. The man who’d raised me. Who’d protected me my whole life.
“Dad—”
“I’m saying be careful,” he cut in gently. “If this goes as deep as Lauren thinks… anyone could be compromised. Anyone. Until we know who the second witness is… assume everyone is lying to us. Including me.”

I nodded slowly. A cold knot forming in my chest. If I couldn’t fully trust my own father… then Lauren was right. I was completely alone in this.
And Daniel’s friends were already closing in.
