Amazed

Chapter 4

My father answered on the first ring.

He was safe.

But when I told him about the photograph, he refused to leave his house.

“I won’t let those people frighten me,” he said.

“This is not about pride, Dad.”

“It is about your safety. You should be worried about yourself.”

“They threatened you because of me.”

“No. They threatened me because they are criminals.”

Maya arranged for a private security officer to stay with him.

Detective Hale sent officers to search for Carl.

The stolen phone had been valuable, but Megan had already backed up the messages online.

Diane did not know that.

We decided to let her believe the evidence was gone.

The emergency hearing took place the following morning.

Diane entered the courtroom using a cane.

She wore dark glasses and moved as though every step caused terrible pain.

Ryan walked beside her, supporting her arm.

Anyone who had not seen the kitchen recording would have thought I had nearly killed her.

Diane’s lawyer told the judge that I had attacked a defenseless older woman over a harmless family disagreement.

Then he showed photographs of bruises on Diane’s back.

I whispered to Maya, “I never touched her back.”

“I know.”

Ryan took the stand.

He swore that his mother had picked up the broom only after I threatened her.

He said I had been angry for months.

He said I controlled him financially.

Then he began crying.

“I tried to protect both of them,” he said. “But Claire became violent.”

Maya stood.

“Mr. Carter, did you transfer forty-eight thousand dollars before this incident?”

Ryan’s tears stopped.

“It was for business expenses.”

“Did your wife approve those transfers?”

“We are married. I didn’t need permission.”

“Did you submit a loan application using her signature?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her to drop the charges if she wanted her money returned?”

“I was emotional.”

Maya played the recorded phone call.

Ryan’s face went white.

His lawyer objected, but the judge allowed it.

Then Maya showed the kitchen video.

Diane watched herself strike me again and again.

Her performance collapsed.

She sat upright.

She stopped limping.

The courtroom became silent when Ryan’s voice came through the speakers.

You brought this on yourself.

The judge granted the restraining orders.

He also ordered Ryan not to move, hide, or spend any disputed money.

As we left, Ryan stepped close enough to whisper.

“You think you won.”

A deputy pushed him back.

Outside, reporters waited beside the courthouse steps.

I had told no one about the hearing.

Diane had invited them.

She moved in front of the cameras and claimed I had manipulated the recording.

She called me a wealthy bully trying to destroy a helpless widow.

Within hours, the video she provided spread across social media.

It began after I grabbed the broom.

It showed me knocking her backward and slapping Ryan.

It did not show the beating.

Thousands of strangers called me abusive.

Some demanded my arrest.

My employer placed me on temporary leave.

A brick was thrown through my father’s window.

The full video should have ended the lies.

Instead, Ryan’s lawyer announced that the security footage had been altered.

He hired an expert who claimed several seconds were missing.

Detective Hale called me that evening.

“Was anyone else able to access your security system?”

“Ryan knew the password.”

“That’s a problem.”

“Why?”

“Someone deleted the cloud backup two hours after the attack.”

My throat tightened.

“But the police saved a copy.”

“We did. His lawyer says that copy came from a corrupted system.”

Megan entered the room carrying her laptop.

“Claire, you need to see this.”

She opened an email from an unknown address.

Attached was an audio file recorded the night before the attack.

Diane’s voice was clear.

Hit her where the bruises won’t show under a dress.

Then Ryan answered.

And if she still refuses to sign?

May you like

Diane laughed.

Then we make sure she never walks into court.
