Chapter 1

My mother-in-law knew my daughter could stop breathing from shrimp—but she secretly mixed it into her dinner anyway.
I realized something was wrong when eight-year-old Lily suddenly dropped her fork.
"Mom… my throat feels funny."
I jumped from my chair.
Across the table, my mother-in-law Diane kept eating.
"What did you put in her food?"
Diane shrugged.
"It's just pasta."
Lily started coughing.
My husband Ryan stared at his mother.
"Mom, answer her."
I grabbed Lily's emergency medication from my purse while Ryan called 911.
Then I smelled it.
Shrimp.
I looked down and found tiny chopped pieces hidden beneath Lily's sauce.
My hands started shaking.
"You knew she was allergic."
Diane rolled her eyes.
"She needs to stop being so dramatic."
Ryan went completely still.
"What did you just say?"
"She's eight years old, Ryan. Children grow out of these things."
Lily gasped and grabbed my arm.
I held her while we waited for the paramedics.
"You fed this to her on purpose?"
Diane slammed her napkin onto the table.
"I wanted to prove Sarah has been exaggerating."
Ryan stared at his mother like he didn't recognize her.
"You used my daughter to prove a point?"
Diane stood up.
"She's perfectly fine."
At that exact moment, Lily collapsed against me.
Ryan shouted his daughter's name.
The paramedics rushed through the front door seconds later and began treating her.
One of them asked, "Who gave her the shrimp?"
Nobody spoke.
Then my six-year-old son Noah slowly raised his hand.
"Grandma did."
Diane's face changed.
Noah pointed toward the kitchen.
"I saw Grandma put it in Lily's bowl after Mom said no shrimp."
I thought that was the worst thing he could say.

Then Noah started crying.
"And Grandma told me if Lily got sick, I had to tell everyone Mommy cooked dinner."
