My mother-in-law lost her temper because my baby wouldn’t stop crying—and when I saw what she did, I slapped her before I could even think.
I never expected my husband to look at me like I was the monster.
It happened on a Sunday afternoon at our home outside Dallas.
My six-month-old son, Noah, had been crying for nearly twenty minutes because he was overtired.
I was upstairs changing his sheets when I heard my mother-in-law, Diane, snap, “Enough!”
Then Noah screamed differently.
I ran downstairs so fast I nearly missed the last step.
Diane was standing beside the couch, and my baby was on the carpet below her, wailing in shock.
“What did you do?” I shouted.
“He wouldn’t stop crying,” she said, as if that explained everything.
I scooped Noah into my arms and checked him while my hands shook.
Then Diane rolled her eyes.
“You young mothers baby your children too much.”
Something inside me broke.
I handed Noah safely to my sister, who had just rushed in from the kitchen.
Then I turned and slapped Diane across the face.
The whole room went silent.
Diane stared at me with one hand against her cheek.
“You hit me?”
“You will never touch my child like that again.”
That was when my husband, Ryan, came through the front door.
His mother immediately started crying.
“Ryan, she attacked me!”
I waited for him to ask about Noah.
He didn’t.
Instead, he walked straight toward me.
“Apologize to my mother.”
I actually thought I had heard him wrong.
“Ryan, she threw our baby down because he was crying.”
His expression barely changed.
“She was frustrated, Emily.”
I felt colder than I had ever felt in my life.
Diane suddenly smiled behind him, thinking she had won.
Then my sister quietly said, “Ryan, before you defend her again, you should know the baby monitor recorded everything.”
Diane’s smile disappeared.
But my sister wasn’t looking at Diane anymore.
