Chapter 1

My mother-in-law saw me walk into a hotel with another man, recorded everything, and sent the video to my husband before I could explain a single thing.
I had been married to Daniel for six years when his mother, Margaret, started saying I was “too secretive.”
She never trusted me.
That Friday afternoon, I told Daniel I had an appointment in downtown Chicago.
He kissed me goodbye.
“Text me when you’re done.”
“I will.”
What I didn’t know was that Margaret was having lunch across the street from the hotel.
She saw me step out of a black SUV with a man she had never met.
He placed his hand on my shoulder.
I smiled at him.
Then we walked through the hotel entrance together.
Margaret immediately pulled out her phone.
“Oh, Emily,” she whispered. “I knew it.”
She followed us inside.
From behind a column, she recorded the man leaning close and saying something in my ear.
Then we entered the elevator together.
Margaret sent the video straight to Daniel.
Her message said, “Your wife is cheating on you. I finally have proof.”
Daniel was sitting in his office when his phone buzzed.
He watched the video once.
Then again.
His face went completely still.
He called me.
I didn’t answer.
He called five more times.
Still nothing.
Margaret sent another message.
“I’m following them upstairs.”
Daniel grabbed his car keys and rushed out.
Meanwhile, Margaret watched me and the stranger stop outside Room 1218.
The man unlocked the door.
I stepped inside with him.
Margaret recorded that too.
Twenty minutes later, Daniel stormed through the hotel lobby.
His mother met him near the elevators.
“She’s still upstairs,” Margaret whispered.
Daniel’s hands were shaking.
“Which room?”
“1218.”
We were still inside when someone began pounding on the door.
“Emily! Open this door!”
I froze when I heard my husband’s voice.
The man beside me looked terrified.
“Does Daniel know?”
Before I could answer, Daniel shouted again.

Then the man reached into his jacket and pulled out an envelope with Daniel’s name written across it.
He stared at me and whispered, “If he sees what’s inside this, his mother’s entire lie is over.”
