Chapter 1

My mother-in-law slapped my eight-year-old son across the face at her own birthday party—and what he said afterward made the entire room turn toward my husband.
We were celebrating Diane’s sixty-fifth birthday at her house outside Chicago.
The dining room was full of relatives waiting for her to cut the cake.
My son, Noah, stood beside me holding a small plate.
When he reached for a napkin, his elbow accidentally knocked over a glass.
Water spilled across the table.
“I’m sorry, Grandma,” Noah said immediately.
Diane’s expression changed.
She grabbed his arm.
“You ruin everything you touch.”
Then she slapped him across the face.
The room went completely silent.
Noah stumbled backward and covered his cheek.
I rushed between them.
“Don’t you ever hit my son again.”
Diane crossed her arms.
“He needs to learn some respect.”
My husband, Ryan, stepped closer.
“Sarah, calm down.”
I stared at him.
“Your mother just hit our child.”
“It was one slap,” he muttered.
Noah started crying.
I pulled him behind me.
“We’re leaving.”
Diane suddenly reached for Noah again.
He jerked away from her.
“No! Don’t take me downstairs!”
Everyone froze.
I turned toward him.
“What downstairs?”
Diane’s face changed instantly.
Ryan quickly said, “He doesn’t know what he’s saying.”
I crouched beside Noah.
“Tell me what happened.”
He looked at Diane, then slowly at his father.
“Grandma takes me downstairs when you’re not home.”
My heart started pounding.
“What does she do?”
Noah wiped his tears.
“She hits me when I don’t listen.”
Diane shouted, “He’s lying!”
But Noah pointed directly at Ryan.

Then he said the words that made my husband freeze.
“Dad knows. He told me not to tell you.”
