Amazed

Chapter 4

For several seconds, I thought I had heard Ryan wrong.

“What did you say?”

Ryan glanced around the lobby.

People were watching now.

Good.

Let them.

He lowered his voice.

“Emily, we should discuss this privately.”

“You just said Lily isn’t legally your daughter.”

Madison stared at him.

Claire said, “You better explain that fast.”

Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.

“It’s complicated.”

“No. It’s a sentence. Explain it.”

He looked at Lily.

That was when I stepped between them.

“Don’t look at her. Look at me.”

His jaw tightened.

“After Lily was born, there was an issue with the acknowledgment of paternity.”

“What issue?”

“I never signed it.”

The air left my lungs.

“You signed everything at the hospital.”

“I signed some forms.”

“You were listed as her father.”

“On the birth certificate, yes.”

“What are you saying?”

He lowered his voice even further.

“I later filed paperwork challenging paternity.”

Claire stared at him.

“You what?”

My mind raced backward.

Lily had been born after a difficult pregnancy.

Ryan had held her in the hospital.

He had cried.

He had kissed her forehead.

He had told everyone she had my nose.

There had never been another man.

Never.

“Why would you challenge paternity?”

Ryan looked toward Madison.

And suddenly I understood.

Not all of it.

But enough.

“You needed a reason to protect your money.”

He said nothing.

Madison looked horrified.

“Ryan, you told me Emily cheated.”

I turned toward her.

“I didn’t.”

“I believe you now.”

Ryan snapped, “Madison, stay out of this.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You made me part of this.”

Evan began to cry.

Madison picked him up.

Lily pressed closer to me.

I hated that both children were standing inside a disaster created by adults.

Claire called Rebecca.

Within minutes, our lawyer told us to leave.

No more confrontation.

No threats.

No arguments.

Just documentation.

As we walked toward the door, Ryan followed.

“Emily, wait.”

I turned.

“What?”

“You cannot keep Lily from me.”

I stared at him.

“You just told me you filed papers claiming she wasn’t yours.”

“That doesn’t mean I don’t love her.”

Lily heard him.

Again.

I watched her little face collapse in confusion.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I crouched beside her.

“Come on, sweetheart.”

Ryan reached toward her.

She hid behind me.

His hand dropped.

For the first time, pain crossed his face.

Maybe genuine pain.

I didn’t care.

Children should not have to pay for adults to discover their conscience.

Back at Rebecca’s office, she pulled records.

Some were immediately available.

Others required formal requests.

But by late afternoon, we had enough to understand the shape of Ryan’s plan.

Three years earlier, he had filed a private petition questioning paternity.

Then he voluntarily dismissed it before any DNA test was completed.

“Why?” I asked.

Rebecca stared at the screen.

“Possibly leverage.”

“For what?”

“Finances. Custody. Divorce planning. Hard to know yet.”

Claire leaned over her shoulder.

“Can he really say he isn’t Lily’s father after raising her for four years?”

“It’s not that simple,” Rebecca said. “And right now, his legal maneuvering may hurt him more than help him.”

I felt numb.

Rebecca continued.

“If he believed he wasn’t the biological father, why did he continue presenting himself as her father? Why did he make medical decisions? Why did he claim her on insurance? Why was he controlling her college fund?”

“The fund.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca’s expression sharpened.

“We now have potential financial misconduct tied directly to the child.”

She was still speaking when her assistant entered.

“There’s someone here asking to see Emily.”

“Who?”

“Diane Harris.”

Claire stood immediately.

“No.”

Rebecca looked at me.

“Your choice.”

I should have refused.

Instead I said, “Let her in.”

Diane entered wearing a different dress from the night before.

Her cheek was faintly bruised where I had struck her.

Seeing it made me feel no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

She looked at Rebecca.

“So you hired a shark.”

Rebecca smiled politely.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Diane sat down without being invited.

Then she placed a thick envelope on the desk.

“I want immunity.”

Rebecca almost laughed.

“This isn’t a criminal negotiation.”

“I want Emily to tell the police she doesn’t want charges.”

“That decision may not belong entirely to Emily.”

Diane looked at me.

“Then I want her cooperation.”

“In exchange for?”

“Everything.”

I stared at the envelope.

“What is everything?”

“Bank records. Messages. Copies of leases. Transfers. Ryan’s second phone records.”

Claire whispered, “You kept all that?”

Diane’s expression twisted.

“My son stopped listening to me.”

There it was.

Not remorse.

Revenge.

“You abused Lily,” I said.

“I disciplined her.”

“You starved her.”

“I withheld meals.”

“She’s four.”

Diane looked away.

For one tiny moment, shame flickered.

Then it disappeared.

“I was angry.”

“At a four-year-old?”

“At you.”

My hands curled into fists.

Rebecca noticed.

“Why?”

Diane looked directly at me.

“Because Ryan was supposed to leave you.”

The words hurt even though nothing about Ryan should have surprised me anymore.

“When?”

“Before Lily was born.”

Madison.

Evan.

The timing.

My stomach turned.

Diane continued.

“He told Madison he would. Then you got pregnant.”

“So you punished my daughter because your son stayed married?”

“He said Lily might not be his.”

“He lied.”

“I believed him.”

“You wanted to believe him.”

Diane flinched.

Good.

Rebecca tapped the envelope.

“What exactly is this?”

Diane slid it toward her.

“Proof Ryan has been moving money for years.”

Rebecca opened it.

Bank statements.

Wire transfers.

Business accounts.

Credit cards.

One transaction immediately caught my attention.

A payment of $82,000 to Harris Family Holdings.

“What is that?”

Diane looked at me.

“The down payment on your house.”

“My father paid our down payment.”

“No.”

I stared at her.

She smiled without warmth.

“Your father gave you the money.”

“Yes.”

“And Ryan transferred it into our family company before closing.”

My ears rang.

“Why?”

“So the house could be leveraged against the company.”

Rebecca stopped turning pages.

“What company?”

Diane looked almost pleased now.

“Harris Development.”

I knew the name.

Ryan’s family business.

I also knew something else.

Two months earlier, Ryan told me Harris Development was struggling.

He said Diane might lose her home.

I had agreed to delay replacing our leaking roof because he wanted to “help his mother.”

Rebecca turned another page.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she rotated the document toward me.

It was a loan agreement.

Our address appeared at the top.

My home.

The place where Lily slept.

The place my father’s inheritance had helped me buy.

It had been pledged as collateral for a business loan.

The signature at the bottom looked like mine.

But I had never signed it.

I stared at Diane.

She stared back.

“Ryan forged your signature.”

My hands went cold.

“How much?”

Rebecca found the amount.

Six hundred thousand dollars.

Claire sat back in shock.

I could barely speak.

“Where did the money go?”

Diane’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked frightened.

“That’s the problem.”

“What problem?”

“Nobody knows.”

Then my phone rang.

It was Madison.

I answered.

She was crying.

“Emily, Ryan took Evan.”

I stood.

“What?”

“He came upstairs after you left. We argued. I went into the bedroom to pack, and when I came out, Evan was gone.”

“Call the police.”

“I did.”

“Do you know where Ryan would take him?”

“No.”

Then she stopped crying.

Her breathing became shallow.

“Oh my God.”

“What?”

“I know where.”

“Where?”

“The lake house.”

Diane stood so fast her chair hit the wall.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

Her face had lost all color.

“Ryan cannot go to the lake house.”

“Why?”

Diane looked at Rebecca.

Then at me.

“Because that’s where he kept the records.”

“What records?”

Her answer came in a whisper.

“The records proving the company never lost six hundred thousand dollars.”

May you like

She swallowed.

“Ryan stole it.”
