Amazed

Chapter 1

My mother-in-law threw a dinner plate at my daughter’s face because she picked up a piece of meat with her fingers. What shocked me even more was watching my husband calmly continue eating.

We were having Sunday dinner at Margaret’s house outside Chicago.

My eight-year-old daughter, Lily, was sitting beside me, unusually quiet.

She reached toward the serving platter and picked up a small piece of chicken with her fingers.

Margaret’s expression immediately hardened.

“Were you raised in a barn?”

Lily froze.

“I’m sorry, Grandma.”

Before I could say anything, Margaret grabbed the empty plate beside her.

She threw it across the table toward Lily.

The plate struck Lily across the cheek and dropped onto the carpet.

“Mom!”

Lily burst into tears.

For several seconds, I couldn’t even move.

I looked at my husband, Ryan.

He glanced at our crying daughter.

Then he calmly cut another piece of steak.

“Mom’s just trying to teach her manners.”

I stared at him.

“She just threw a plate at your daughter.”

Margaret laughed.

“Maybe if you knew how to raise a child, I wouldn’t have to.”

Lily climbed into my arms.

Margaret wasn’t finished.

“You’ve spoiled her exactly the way your mother spoiled you.”

“Leave my family out of this.”

“Why? Everyone knows where you came from.”

Ryan sighed.

“Emily, don’t start another argument.”

That sentence pushed me over the edge.

I looked at the huge bowl of salad sitting between us, drenched in creamy dressing.

Margaret reached for her wine.

I grabbed the salad bowl.

Then I flipped the entire thing over her head.

Lettuce, tomatoes, and dressing poured down her hair and expensive blouse.

The table went completely silent.

Margaret slowly stood up.

“You little—”

“No.”

I pulled Lily behind me.

“You don’t get to humiliate my daughter and then expect me to sit here quietly.”

Ryan slammed his fork down.

“Apologize to my mother.”

I actually laughed.

“You watched her hurt Lily and kept eating.”

Margaret wiped dressing from her face.

“Ryan, get her out of my house.”

Ryan stood and stepped toward me.

But before he reached me, Lily suddenly pointed toward the dining-room doorway.

“Daddy… Uncle Michael recorded it.”

Everyone turned.

Ryan’s younger brother was standing there with his phone still raised.

His face was furious.

“I recorded the plate hitting Lily,” Michael said.

Margaret went pale.

Ryan immediately said, “Delete it.”

Michael shook his head.

“Too late. I already sent it to Emily.”

Margaret’s confidence disappeared.

Then Michael looked directly at me.

“And you need to take Lily home tonight, because this isn’t the first time Mom has done something to her.”

I tightened my arms around my daughter.

Ryan’s face suddenly changed.

“Michael, shut up.”

That was when I realized my exasperatingly calm husband wasn’t surprised at all.

He already knew.

And before I could ask how long this had been happening, Lily whispered, “Mommy… Daddy told me never to tell you what Grandma does when you’re gone.”
