Chapter 1

My mother-in-law threw a glass of water in my face at a charity gala and called me a gold digger—she had no idea the quiet man walking toward us was my father.
My name is Claire, and I had been married to Daniel for eight months.
His mother, Margaret, had never accepted me.
She believed I came from an ordinary family with nothing to offer her son.
That night, we attended a charity gala at a luxury hotel in Manhattan.
Daniel stepped away to speak with one of his company’s executives.
The moment he left, Margaret walked toward me.
“You really enjoy pretending you belong here, don’t you?”
I tried to walk away.
“Not tonight, Margaret.”
She blocked me.
“Daniel could have married anyone, and somehow he chose you.”
Several guests turned toward us.
I lowered my voice.
“Please stop embarrassing yourself.”
Her expression hardened.
Then she grabbed a glass of water from a waiter’s tray.
Before I could react, she threw it directly into my face.
The entire ballroom went silent.
Margaret smiled.
“Maybe that will remind you where you came from.”
I wiped the water from my eyes.
“You’re going to regret doing that.”
She laughed loudly.
“What are you going to do? Call your poor little family?”
Then Daniel came rushing back.
“Mom! What did you just do?”
“She needed to learn some respect.”
Daniel stepped between us.
“You just humiliated my wife in front of everyone.”
Margaret pointed at me.
“She married you for your money.”
That was when a deep voice came from behind her.
“My daughter has never needed your son’s money.”
Margaret slowly turned around.
A gray-haired man stood there surrounded by several executives and the hotel’s general manager.
I hadn’t seen my father in almost six months.
“Dad?”
The hotel manager immediately approached him.
“Mr. Harrison, we weren’t expecting you until later.”
Margaret’s confident smile vanished.
She whispered, “Harrison?”
One of Daniel’s executives leaned toward her.
“That’s Charles Harrison.”
Margaret stared at my father.
The executive continued, “His investment group owns the company your son works for.”
My father looked at the water dripping from my dress.
Then he looked directly at Margaret.
But before he could speak, Daniel’s CEO hurried across the ballroom and said, “Mr. Harrison, the board is ready for your decision about Daniel’s promotion.”
Margaret’s face went completely still.
My father turned toward Daniel, then back to the woman who had just humiliated me.

And he asked one quiet question.
“Claire, is this the woman you told me about?”
