Chapter 1

My mother-in-law threw my seven-month-old son onto the carpet because he wouldn’t stop crying. Before I even realized what I was doing, my hand hit her face.
It happened on a Sunday afternoon at our house outside Dallas.
My husband, Ryan, had gone to pick up groceries while his mother, Diane, stayed with me and the baby.
My son Noah had been teething for days, and nothing seemed to calm him.
Diane sighed loudly every time he cried.
“You spoil that child too much,” she said.
“He’s seven months old, Diane.”
“He needs to learn that crying doesn’t get him everything.”
I ignored her and carried Noah toward the kitchen to warm his bottle.
Then my phone rang upstairs.
“I’ll be thirty seconds,” I told her. “Please just hold him.”
When I came back down, Noah was screaming harder.
Diane was standing beside the couch with him in her arms.
“Give him to me,” I said.
Instead, she snapped, “I’ve had enough of this!”
What happened next made my entire body go cold.
She suddenly dropped Noah down onto the thick living-room carpet.
He landed hard and screamed.
“NOAH!”
I ran forward and scooped him into my arms.
He was crying so hard he could barely catch his breath.
I looked at Diane.
“What did you just do?”
She rolled her eyes.
“Oh, stop being dramatic. He’s fine.”
Something inside me exploded.
I handed Noah carefully onto the couch beside me, stepped toward her, and slapped her.
Diane stumbled backward, staring at me in shock.
“You hit me?”
“You threw my baby!”
Her face changed instantly.
“You’re going to regret touching me.”
The front door opened.
Ryan walked in carrying grocery bags and froze.
His mother immediately started crying.
“She attacked me!”
Ryan looked at the red mark on her cheek.
Then he looked at me.
“Emily… what did you do?”
“She threw Noah onto the floor.”
Diane gasped.
“That is a lie!”
Ryan slowly put the bags down.
For one terrible second, I thought he believed her.
Then a small voice came from the staircase.
“Dad?”
Ryan’s ten-year-old niece, Lily, had been upstairs watching cartoons.
She was holding something in her trembling hand.
“Aunt Emily isn’t lying.”
Diane’s face suddenly went white.
Ryan stared at Lily.

“What did you see?”
Lily swallowed and whispered, “I recorded what Grandma did… but that’s not the worst thing she said before she dropped Noah.”
