Amazed

Chapter 3

The fire burned for three hours.

Daniel stood across the street, unable to look away.

Every flame felt deliberate.

Every burst of smoke looked like another piece of Claire disappearing.

Officer Ortiz remained beside him.

“The vault is designed to survive fire,” she said.

“What if the fire started inside it?”

“We don’t know that it did.”

“Vanessa called me.”

“Show me.”

Daniel handed her his phone.

The number was blocked, but the call had been recorded by his security application.

Ortiz listened twice.

“That helps us.”

“It doesn’t help Claire.”

“If the box survives, we may still recover the contents.”

“And if it doesn’t?”

“Then we prove who set the fire.”

Daniel watched firefighters carry an injured security guard toward an ambulance.

Guilt twisted inside him.

Someone had been hurt because he tried to open the box.

His phone rang again.

This time it was Eleanor.

“Daniel, come back.”

“What happened?”

“Marcus is here.”

Daniel’s body went cold.

“Don’t let him inside.”

“He’s already inside.”

“Take the children upstairs and lock the door.”

“I’m not leaving them alone with him.”

“Mom, listen to me. Get them away from him. I’m coming.”

He ended the call and ran to his car.

Ortiz followed.

“What happened?”

“Marcus is at my mother’s house.”

They reached Eleanor’s neighborhood in eleven minutes.

A black sedan stood in the driveway.

The front door was open.

Daniel rushed inside.

Marcus sat at the kitchen table.

Eleanor stood near the counter with Maya behind her.

Ethan was missing.

“Where’s Ethan?” Daniel demanded.

Marcus rose slowly.

“Calm down.”

“Where is my son?”

“I don’t know.”

Eleanor pointed upstairs.

“He went to his room when Marcus arrived.”

Daniel ran up the stairs.

The bedroom door was locked.

“Ethan?”

No answer.

Daniel struck the door with his shoulder.

It opened on the second attempt.

The room was empty.

The window was raised.

A bedsheet had been tied to the radiator and lowered outside.

Daniel leaned out.

The sheet reached the roof of the porch.

A note lay on the bed.

He grabbed it.

Dad, I went to get the other letter. Mom hid it where the music sleeps. Don’t trust Marcus.

Daniel’s hands shook.

Ethan had overheard more than anyone realized.

He ran downstairs.

Marcus saw the note.

“What did he write?”

Daniel shoved him against the wall.

“What did Claire hide where the music sleeps?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You knew her.”

Marcus glanced at Ortiz.

“I met Claire a few times. She was my partner’s wife.”

“You met Vanessa before Claire died.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Eleanor saw photographs.”

“Photographs that may not exist.”

Daniel tightened his grip.

Ortiz pulled him back.

“Let him go.”

Marcus adjusted his jacket.

“I came because I heard Vanessa was removed from the house. Daniel is obviously upset.”

“You texted him about it before the news was public,” Ortiz said.

Marcus’s face barely changed.

“Vanessa called me.”

“When?”

“This morning.”

“From where?”

“I don’t know.”

Ortiz asked him to remain for questioning.

Marcus smiled politely.

“Unless I’m under arrest, I’m leaving.”

He looked at Daniel.

“You need to think carefully about what you’re doing. Our company has employees depending on us.”

“My son is missing.”

“And you’re wasting time accusing me.”

Marcus walked out.

Ortiz called patrol units and issued an alert for Ethan.

Daniel studied the note.

“Where the music sleeps,” he repeated.

Eleanor touched his arm.

“Claire’s piano.”

The old piano remained in Daniel’s house.

Claire had played every evening.

After her death, no one touched it.

Vanessa wanted to sell it, but Ethan screamed until Daniel agreed to keep it.

“He went home,” Daniel said.

Ortiz drove him there.

They arrived to find the back door unlocked.

Daniel entered first.

“Ethan!”

A soft thump came from the music room.

He found his son kneeling under the piano with a screwdriver.

Daniel dropped beside him.

“Do you understand how frightened I was?”

Ethan’s face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel pulled him into his arms.

“You cannot leave without telling us.”

“I had to get here before Marcus.”

“You could have been hurt.”

“I thought he would follow you to the bank.”

Daniel wanted to be angry.

Instead, he saw a terrified child trying to solve an adult nightmare.

“You don’t have to protect us alone,” he said. “That is my job.”

Ethan wiped his eyes.

“I found this.”

One wooden panel beneath the keyboard had been loosened.

Inside was a narrow envelope.

Claire had written Daniel’s name on it.

His knees weakened.

He had not seen her handwriting in two years.

Officer Ortiz photographed the envelope before allowing him to open it.

Inside was a memory card and a letter.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, either I finally found the courage to show you everything, or something stopped me.

Marcus has been stealing from the company.

I can prove it.

But he is not alone.

The woman helping him is named Vanessa Cole.

She approached me three months ago and claimed Marcus had cheated her. She offered evidence in exchange for money.

I believed her.

That was my first mistake.

After I met her, files disappeared from my computer. Someone entered our house. The brakes on my car were damaged.

Marcus says I am paranoid.

Vanessa says she wants to help.

I no longer trust either of them.

The records are in box 317.

Copies are on the enclosed card.

Please protect Ethan and Maya.

Please forgive me for keeping this from you.

I love you.

Claire

Daniel read the letter twice.

The room blurred.

Claire had been afraid.

She had tried to warn him.

While she faced threats inside their home, he had been drinking and dismissing her as anxious.

Ethan touched his shoulder.

“Dad?”

Daniel pulled him close.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not being the man your mother needed.”

Ethan looked at Claire’s handwriting.

“Did Vanessa hurt Mom?”

“I don’t know.”

But he feared the answer.

Ortiz placed the memory card into an evidence pouch.

“We need to examine this properly.”

Daniel nodded.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Ortiz drew her weapon.

“Stay here.”

She moved into the hallway.

Daniel pushed Ethan behind the piano.

Another officer entered through the back door.

They searched the house.

In the master bedroom, they found Vanessa’s closet open.

Several dresses were gone.

So were her passport, jewelry, and laptop.

Someone had entered while Daniel was at the bank.

On the mirror, written in red lipstick, were five words.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET HER GO.

Ethan saw the message before Daniel could stop him.

“Does that mean Mom?”

Daniel covered the words with a towel.

“We’re leaving.”

Outside, a neighbor approached.

“I saw Vanessa earlier,” she said.

Daniel turned.

“When?”

“Maybe forty minutes ago. She was with a man.”

“Marcus?”

The neighbor shook her head.

“This man was older. Gray hair. He drove a white truck.”

Ortiz asked for a description.

The neighbor mentioned a scar beside his left eye.

Daniel recognized him.

“Calvin Shaw.”

Ortiz looked at him.

“Who is that?”

“He was the mechanic who inspected Claire’s car after the crash.”

They found Shaw’s garage abandoned.

The white truck was gone.

His employee said Shaw received a large payment two days after Claire’s death and closed the business soon afterward.

The payment came through Northstar Holdings.

By afternoon, the evidence was no longer a collection of suspicions.

It formed a pattern.

Northstar stole money from Daniel’s company.

Northstar paid the mechanic connected to Claire’s crash.

Marcus had access to company accounts.

Vanessa knew Marcus before Claire died.

And both of them were desperate to find Claire’s evidence.

The memory card could expose everything.

At the police station, a digital investigator opened it.

Most files were encrypted.

One video was not.

Claire appeared on the screen.

She sat inside her car.

Rain struck the windshield.

The timestamp showed it had been recorded forty-two minutes before her death.

“If Daniel sees this,” she began, “I need him to know I did not choose to leave my children.”

Her voice trembled.

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

“I’m driving to meet Vanessa. She says she has proof against Marcus. I told Eleanor about the bank key, but not where I hid it. If Vanessa is telling the truth, I can end this tonight.”

Claire looked into the rearview mirror.

Headlights appeared behind her.

“She found me.”

The video ended.

Daniel could not breathe.

Ortiz paused the final frame.

The headlights belonged to a dark SUV.

Vanessa had owned a dark SUV at that time.

Daniel remembered her claiming she sold it before they met.

The investigator began decrypting the other files.

It would take hours.

Daniel returned to Eleanor’s house under police protection.

Ethan and Maya refused to sleep separately.

Daniel lay between them.

Maya placed Bunny on his chest.

“Mommy loved Bunny,” she whispered.

“She loved you more.”

“Is Mommy in the key?”

“No, sweetheart.”

“Then why does everyone want it?”

“Because Mommy put the truth behind a locked door.”

Maya considered that.

“Will the truth make Vanessa go away?”

Daniel kissed her forehead.

“I hope so.”

Near midnight, his phone rang.

The digital investigator had opened another file.

It contained financial records and audio clips.

In one recording, Marcus argued with Claire.

“You don’t understand what you found,” he said.

“I understand that you stole from my husband.”

“I protected the company.”

“You transferred money to yourself.”

“You think Daniel could have kept that business alive? He was drunk by noon.”

“I’m taking this to the police.”

“If you do, Daniel loses everything too.”

“Is that a threat?”

“It’s a warning.”

A woman’s voice entered the recording.

“Claire, put the phone down.”

Vanessa.

The recording ended with a crash.

Daniel stared at the transcript Ortiz sent him.

A new message arrived before he could respond.

It came from Ethan’s tablet.

The tablet was in the kitchen.

Daniel opened the message.

A photograph filled the screen.

Vanessa stood beside Maya’s preschool.

The photograph had been taken that afternoon.

Below it were four words.

Give me the memory card.

Daniel ran upstairs.

Maya was asleep beside Ethan.

He checked every window.

Every lock.

Then he called Ortiz.

Before she answered, the doorbell rang.

Daniel looked through the camera.

Marcus stood on the porch.

Blood covered his shirt.

May you like

He lifted both hands.

“Daniel,” he shouted. “Vanessa tried to kill me.”
