Amazed

Chapter 7

Caleb reached for Ortiz’s radio.

“What happened?”

Ortiz held him back.

“Units are already at the estate.”

“My mother is inside.”

“You need medical attention.”

“I need to go.”

Jamie clung to him.

“Don’t leave me.”

Caleb looked at Grant.

Paramedics were treating his shoulder before transporting him under armed guard.

Grant smiled through the pain.

“You’re too late.”

Caleb lunged.

Two officers stopped him.

“What did you do to her?”

Grant laughed.

“She came willingly.”

Ortiz grabbed Grant’s collar.

“If Sarah dies, you will never see daylight again.”

“I wasn’t there.”

“You planned it.”

“Prove it.”

Caleb remembered the vent.

“Dr. Voss heard everything.”

Police searched the shelter.

Voss had escaped through another exit.

Vanessa was alive.

The bullet had passed through her side without striking a major organ.

As paramedics loaded her into an ambulance, she grabbed Caleb’s wrist.

“Margaret.”

“What?”

“Your grandmother is at the estate.”

Caleb stared at her.

“She’s working with Grant?”

“She always was.”

Vanessa struggled to breathe.

“She arranged Sarah’s first commitment. Grant learned from her.”

The ambulance doors closed.

Caleb felt the ground shift beneath him again.

Margaret had been the one relative he still believed might care.

When Grant disappeared, she had held Jamie and promised everything would be fine.

Then she had refused to let the boys stay with her because she was “too old for noise.”

It had never been about age.

She had wanted the trust without responsibility.

Ortiz finally allowed Caleb and Jamie to ride with her to the estate.

Two patrol cars escorted them.

The drive took nearly two hours.

Caleb called Sarah’s name over and over in his head.

He had finally called her Mom.

She might never have heard it.

Jamie sat beside him beneath a blanket.

“Is Mom going to die?”

“No.”

“You don’t know.”

Caleb looked at his little brother.

“No, I don’t.”

Jamie began crying.

Caleb took his hand.

“But she survived Dad for eight years. She survived the crash. She found us. She’s not giving up now.”

Jamie nodded.

Neither of them believed courage could guarantee survival.

But they needed the words.

The Reed estate appeared beyond tall iron gates.

Caleb had spent holidays there as a child.

The mansion stood on a hill.

The glass greenhouse stretched behind it.

Police vehicles covered the lawn.

Smoke rose from one side of the structure.

Ortiz ordered the boys to remain in the car.

Caleb waited until she turned away.

Then he and Jamie ran toward the greenhouse.

Officers shouted.

Caleb ignored them.

One glass door had been chained from the outside.

An officer cut through it.

Heat rolled out.

The fire was small but spreading through dry plants.

“Mom!” Jamie screamed.

No answer.

Caleb entered.

Smoke stung his eyes.

Rows of tall plants formed a maze.

He heard something fall near the center.

“Sarah!”

A weak voice answered.

“Caleb?”

He ran toward it.

Sarah lay beside a stone fountain.

Her hands were tied.

Dr. Voss knelt beside her with a syringe.

Margaret Reed stood behind him.

She wore a pearl necklace and a dark green dress, as if she were attending dinner instead of a murder.

Margaret saw Caleb.

“You should not be here.”

Caleb stared at her.

“You did this.”

“I protected this family.”

Sarah tried to rise.

Voss pressed the syringe against her neck.

“Stay back.”

Jamie appeared behind Caleb.

“Grandma?”

Margaret’s expression softened.

“Jamie, come to me.”

He hid behind his brother.

“You hurt Mom.”

“That woman has confused you.”

“She is my mom.”

“She abandoned you.”

Sarah looked at Jamie.

“Don’t listen.”

Voss pushed the needle closer.

Caleb raised his hands.

“What do you want?”

Margaret answered calmly.

“Order.”

“You mean money.”

“Money preserves order.”

“You locked my mother away.”

“Sarah was going to destroy Grant’s reputation.”

“He tried to kill her.”

“Marriage requires endurance.”

Sarah stared at Margaret.

“You told him to force my car off the road.”

Margaret’s face remained cold.

“I told him to stop you.”

Caleb’s stomach turned.

Grant had not acted alone.

His own mother had ordered it.

Margaret stepped closer.

“Your grandfather built the Reed company from nothing. Sarah intended to expose private financial matters and hand the company to prosecutors.”

“Grant stole from Jamie.”

“Grant moved money to protect it from the government.”

“It wasn’t his.”

“Everything in this family belongs to this family.”

Caleb heard police moving outside the greenhouse.

Voss heard them too.

“We need to go.”

Margaret ignored him.

She looked at Caleb.

“You are almost eighteen. You can still correct this.”

“How?”

“Tell the police Sarah forced you to transfer the money. Say she returned because she wanted the trust.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Don’t.”

Margaret continued.

“Your father’s charges will disappear. Vanessa will be treated. Jamie will come home with me. You will inherit the company.”

Caleb almost laughed.

“You think I want it?”

“You want your brother safe.”

“Not with you.”

Margaret’s eyes hardened.

“Then you are as foolish as your mother.”

She nodded at Voss.

He raised the syringe.

Jamie screamed and threw himself toward Sarah.

Caleb grabbed him.

At the same moment, a gunshot shattered the glass ceiling.

Voss ducked.

Detective Ortiz entered from the side.

“Drop the syringe!”

Margaret grabbed Jamie.

She pulled him against her and held a small pistol to his chest.

Caleb froze.

“Grandma, please.”

Jamie began sobbing.

Margaret backed toward the rear exit.

“You did this, Caleb.”

“No. You did.”

“You could have accepted your place.”

“My place is with him.”

“Then he may die with you.”

Sarah surged to her feet.

She struck Margaret with both bound hands.

The gun fired.

Glass exploded beside Caleb.

Jamie fell.

For one terrible second, Caleb thought he had been shot.

Then Jamie lifted his head.

“I’m okay.”

Ortiz tackled Margaret.

Another officer arrested Voss.

Caleb crawled to Sarah and tore at the rope around her wrists.

She was weak and dizzy.

The syringe had scratched her skin but had not delivered the full dose.

“Mom.”

Sarah looked at him.

He held her face.

“Mom, stay awake.”

A broken smile appeared.

“You called me Mom.”

“Don’t make a big deal about it.”

She laughed and cried at the same time.

Paramedics carried her from the greenhouse.

Margaret was led away in handcuffs.

She looked at Caleb without regret.

“You have destroyed your inheritance.”

Caleb stood beside Jamie.

“No. I saved my family.”

At the hospital, doctors treated Sarah for smoke inhalation and a partial injection of sedative.

She would recover.

Caleb sat beside her bed.

Jamie slept curled against her side.

Sarah opened her eyes shortly before sunrise.

“Where’s Grant?”

“In custody.”

“Margaret?”

“Custody.”

“Voss?”

“Custody.”

She exhaled.

Caleb looked at her wrists.

“I’m sorry I went to the house.”

“You were looking for the truth.”

“I could have gotten everyone killed.”

“Yes.”

He blinked.

“I thought you were supposed to say it wasn’t my fault.”

“Grant’s crimes are not your fault. Leaving the shelter was your choice.”

Caleb stared at her.

Then he smiled faintly.

“You really are my mother.”

“I am.”

“I don’t know how to do this.”

“Neither do I.”

“You’re the adult.”

“I missed eight years. I have a lot to learn.”

Jamie opened one eye.

“You can start by making pancakes.”

Sarah kissed his forehead.

“I can do that.”

The door opened.

Judge Carter entered with Ortiz.

Their expressions were grim.

Caleb stood.

“What now?”

Ortiz placed a tablet on the table.

“Grant’s attorney released a video to the media.”

The edited recording showed Caleb inside his bedroom.

His voice had been cut together from different moments.

“I moved the money.”

“I’ll kill her.”

“Jamie belongs to me.”

Then the video showed Sarah entering the protected apartment and embracing Caleb.

A false timestamp made it appear that they had met before the courtroom hearing.

The news headline read:

TEEN HEIR AND “DEAD” MOTHER ACCUSED OF $12 MILLION TRUST CONSPIRACY.

Caleb felt sick.

“It’s fake.”

“We know,” Ortiz said. “But the public doesn’t.”

Judge Carter looked at Sarah.

“The Reed family’s corporate board has filed for emergency guardianship of Jamie. They claim Sarah manipulated Caleb into committing financial crimes.”

“Margaret and Grant are in jail,” Caleb said.

“The board says they acted independently.”

Sarah tried to sit up.

“They want the trust.”

“And they have obtained a temporary order freezing every account connected to you.”

Caleb understood.

They had stopped Grant.

But the machine surrounding him was still alive.

Judge Carter continued.

“There will be a hearing in forty-eight hours.”

“To decide what?” Jamie asked.

The judge looked at the little boy.

“Where you and Caleb will live.”

Jamie grabbed Caleb’s hand.

“No.”

Sarah reached for both of them.

Judge Carter’s voice became gentle.

“I will do everything the law allows.”

Caleb remembered the first hearing.

The silent courtroom.

Jamie begging not to leave him.

They had found their mother.

They had survived their father.

And still, strangers were preparing to tear them apart.

Caleb looked at Ortiz.

“Where are the original camera recordings?”

“Grant’s servers were wiped.”

“What about the ledgers?”

“Missing.”

“Vanessa had one.”

“She claims Grant took it.”

Caleb looked toward the window.

The sun was rising.

Somewhere, evidence existed that could prove everything.

He thought about Grant’s obsession with control.

Grant never destroyed valuable information.

He hid it.

Caleb suddenly remembered the stuffed bear.

The camera inside its eye.

The speaker inside its chest.

“What happened to the bear?”

Ortiz frowned.

“Evidence storage.”

“Grant used it to watch us.”

“Yes.”

“Then it needed a signal.”

Ortiz understood.

“If the camera uploaded to a remote server…”

“We might find the original recordings.”

Mara entered behind them.

“And the accounts.”

Hope moved through the room.

Then Ortiz’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

Grant Reed had been transported to the hospital for surgery.

His prison vehicle never arrived.

It had been found beneath an overpass.

The driver was unconscious.

Two guards were missing.

Grant was gone.
