Chapter 7

The photograph was a forgery.
Daniel knew it.
Claire knew it.
The federal agents did not.
The image showed Claire’s face, her coat, and Noah’s passport.
Metadata indicated it had been captured by an airfield camera three days before the poisoning.
Bank records showed the transfer to Mercer Family Holdings originated from Claire’s phone.
The prescription bottle had been found in her purse.
Her packed bags suggested she planned to flee.
Evelyn had built the case piece by piece.
Daniel showed the agents the video of Evelyn pouring liquid into Noah’s tea.
They watched it twice.
“It proves Evelyn gave him something,” one agent said. “It doesn’t prove Claire wasn’t involved.”
“She tried to kill him again at the hospital.”
“At the same hospital where Claire had unrestricted access.”
“My wife saved him.”
“We’ll examine every fact.”
Claire raised her hands before the agents could touch her.
“Don’t do this in front of Noah.”
He was still at the hospital, but she spoke as though he might see it later.
Daniel stood helplessly as they cuffed her.
“I’ll get you out.”
Claire looked at him.
“Protect our son.”
They took her away.
Ortiz was furious.
“The federal warrant bypassed my investigation,” she said. “Someone gave them a carefully selected evidence package.”
“Evelyn.”
“Through an attorney or an official contact. She didn’t prepare this in one night.”
Daniel remembered Evelyn’s words at the patio.
You can’t prove a thing.
She had expected Claire’s arrest from the beginning.
Daniel returned to the hospital with Rachel.
Noah asked where his mother was.
Daniel refused to lie.
“The police are asking her questions because Grandma made things look confusing.”
“Is Mommy in trouble?”
“She didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Then why did they take her?”
Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.
“Sometimes people believe a strong lie before they learn the truth.”
Noah considered this.
“Grandma practices lies.”
“What do you mean?”
“She says them in the mirror until she doesn’t blink.”
Rachel turned toward Daniel.
“When did you see that?” she asked.
“At Grandma’s house. She practiced saying Mommy hurt me.”
Daniel’s skin went cold.
“What else did she practice?”
“That Daddy was too angry to take care of me.”
Evelyn planned to destroy both parents.
If Claire was convicted and Daniel was declared unstable, Noah would need a guardian.
Despite the murder warrant, Evelyn might still believe she could manipulate the legal process through Vale’s connections.
Or perhaps she had chosen a substitute.
“Susan,” Daniel said.
Rachel frowned.
“What about her?”
“She has worked for the family for eighteen years. If Evelyn made her temporary trustee or guardian before turning against her—”
Ortiz called from the doorway.
“The trust contains a successor guardian provision.”
“Who?”
“Susan Grant.”
Daniel stood.
Susan had protected Thomas’s evidence.
She had also taken it without notifying police.
She had warned Daniel, then appeared at exactly the place Evelyn used to hold Noah.
Her loyalties remained unclear.
“Where is she?”
“Gone.”
“She was shot.”
“She left the hospital against medical advice thirty minutes ago.”
Daniel called Susan.
This time, she answered.
“Where are you?” he demanded.
“Fixing the mistake I made eighteen years ago.”
“What mistake?”
“Not telling you the truth when Thomas died.”
“You knew Evelyn killed him.”
“I suspected. I didn’t hear the tape until I opened the box.”
“You took the evidence.”
“Because a federal prosecutor named Calvin Price called me before the police did. He told me to deliver the box to him.”
“Who is Calvin Price?”
“Stephen Vale’s brother-in-law.”
The arrest warrant suddenly made sense.
A federal prosecutor was helping Evelyn.
“Where are you now?”
“At the original Mercer house.”
Daniel looked at Ortiz.
The original house had stood empty since Thomas’s death.
Police searched it earlier but found nothing.
“Why?”
“Thomas hid duplicate records here. Evelyn is coming to destroy them.”
“Leave.”
“I can’t.”
“Susan, she shot you.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you waiting for her?”
“Because I sent her a message saying the records include a second copy of the trust.”
Daniel understood.
“You’re using yourself as bait.”
“She took Noah because I led her to your office. I believed I could rescue him alone.”
“You helped save him.”
“I also helped create the danger.”
Daniel grabbed his keys.
“Do not confront her.”
Susan laughed weakly.
“She will never stop while she believes there is evidence left to destroy.”
Ortiz took the phone.
“Ms. Grant, step outside and wait for officers.”
A floorboard creaked through the connection.
Susan whispered, “She’s here.”
The line disconnected.
Ortiz called tactical units.
Daniel followed despite her objections.
The original Mercer house stood twenty miles outside the city.
It was a white farmhouse surrounded by fields and dying trees.
Daniel had lived there until he was twelve.
Thomas moved the family after Evelyn complained that the house reminded everyone she had replaced another woman.
Police approached without lights.
The front door stood open.
Inside, the house smelled of dust and old wood.
A trail of blood led from the foyer.
Susan’s blood.
They found her in Thomas’s former study, tied to a chair.
A cloth covered her mouth.
Daniel removed it while Ortiz cut the rope.
“Where is Evelyn?” he asked.
Susan pointed toward a bookcase.
A hidden door stood open behind it.
Ortiz entered with two officers.
Daniel stayed with Susan.
“Did she shoot you again?”
Susan shook her head.
“The old wound opened.”
“What did she want?”
“The duplicate files.”
“Do they exist?”
Susan looked at the desk.
“Inside Rebecca’s letters.”
Daniel opened the top drawer.
It contained dozens of letters written by his birth mother.
Susan had found them hidden inside the wall.
One was addressed to Thomas.
If anything happens to me, do not let Evelyn near Daniel.
Daniel read the line twice.
Rebecca had known Evelyn before her death.
Another letter explained why.
Evelyn had worked as Rebecca’s private nurse during a dangerous pregnancy.
Dr. Vale had been Rebecca’s physician.
Rebecca believed they were intentionally worsening her condition.
“She didn’t die after childbirth,” Daniel whispered.
Susan shook her head.
“She died during it. Vale signed the certificate. Evelyn moved into the house six months later.”
Daniel felt the past opening beneath him.
Evelyn and Vale had targeted the Mercer family before Marcus was born.
They had killed Rebecca, taken her place, stolen company money, murdered Thomas, and now tried to kill Noah.
A gunshot came from behind the bookcase.
Ortiz shouted.
Daniel ran through the hidden doorway.
A narrow passage led to an underground room.
Dr. Vale held a gun against Ortiz’s shoulder.
Evelyn stood beside an open metal furnace.
She was feeding documents into the flames.
“Stop!” Daniel shouted.
Vale turned the gun toward him.
Ortiz struck his wrist.
The weapon fired into the ceiling.
An officer tackled Vale.
Evelyn grabbed a burning bundle of papers and threw it at Daniel.
He shielded his face.
She ran past him toward the passage.
Susan stepped into the doorway.
“You’re not leaving.”
Evelyn stopped.
For a moment, the two women stared at each other.
“You were always weak,” Evelyn said.
Susan’s voice did not shake.
“No. I was afraid.”
Evelyn moved closer.
“There is no difference.”
“There is now.”
Evelyn pulled a knife from her sleeve.
Daniel lunged between them.
She swung at him.
The blade cut his forearm.
Before she could strike again, Marcus appeared behind her and seized her wrist.
“Enough, Mom.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You chose them?”
“I chose the child you tried to murder.”
She drove her elbow into his injured ribs.
Marcus fell.
Evelyn ran into the study and escaped through a broken window.
Police dogs followed her trail into the fields.
Vale was arrested.
Ortiz had a gunshot wound through her shoulder but remained conscious.
Daniel pressed cloth against it while officers called for paramedics.
Vale laughed from the floor.
“You still don’t understand,” he said.
Daniel looked at him.
“Evelyn doesn’t need the company anymore.”
“What does she need?”
Vale smiled.
“Only revenge.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
The county jail was calling.
Claire had been attacked in her holding cell.
May you like
She was being rushed to the hospital.
And the woman who attacked her had received instructions from someone using Daniel’s phone number.
