Amazed

Chapter 6

Police reached Megan’s apartment twenty minutes later.

She was gone.

Her phone lay broken on the kitchen floor.

There were no signs of a violent struggle, but neighbors had seen Megan leave with Ryan.

One neighbor described them arguing beside his car.

Another heard Megan shout that she would go to the police.

Ryan’s attorney claimed the siblings had voluntarily traveled together to discuss a family matter.

Ryan refused to disclose their location.

The judge ordered him to appear the following morning.

He did not.

A warrant was issued.

By then, Ryan’s car had been found at the Nashville airport.

Security footage showed him and Megan entering the terminal.

No record showed either of them boarding a flight.

Detective Hale believed they switched vehicles.

Emily believed Megan was in danger.

She also feared Ryan might return for Ellie.

The protective order was only paper.

Ryan had already ignored court orders, destroyed evidence and planned to move his child across state lines.

Emily refused to wait helplessly.

She moved the girls to her sister Natalie’s farmhouse outside Franklin.

Only Ava, Detective Hale and two deputies knew the location.

The house stood at the end of a long gravel road.

There were cameras at the gate and alarms on every door.

For the first time in days, Ellie played without constantly looking over her shoulder.

Chloe did not relax so easily.

She checked windows.

She asked whether doors were locked.

At night, she slept on the floor beside Ellie’s crib.

Emily found her there shortly after midnight.

“You can sleep in the bed,” she whispered.

“What if Daddy comes?”

“The police are looking for him.”

“What if they don’t find him?”

Emily lay down beside her.

“Then he’ll still have to get through me.”

Chloe looked frightened.

“I don’t want you to kick him again.”

Emily’s heart sank.

“I won’t.”

“He wanted you to.”

“I know.”

“He makes people become the worst version of themselves.”

The wisdom in Chloe’s voice sounded far too old for nine.

Emily touched her hair.

“He tried. But we know what he’s doing now.”

“Are you mad at me for taking the memory card?”

“No.”

“I listened to him at first.”

“You were a child being manipulated by an adult you trusted.”

Chloe’s lips trembled.

“I still loved him.”

“You’re allowed to grieve someone who hurt you.”

Chloe turned toward her.

“Did you love him?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still?”

Emily thought carefully.

“I love the person I believed he was. But I don’t think that person ever existed.”

The next morning, Ava arrived with news.

Investigators had confirmed the life insurance fraud.

Ryan submitted beneficiary change documents six years earlier, shortly after marrying Emily.

The forms named “future biological children of Emily Carter” as contingent beneficiaries.

When Ellie was born, Ryan filed additional forged documents making himself custodian of any payout.

He had also borrowed against the policy.

Nearly one million dollars was missing.

“That’s why he needs control of Ellie,” Emily said.

Ava nodded.

“If he becomes her sole guardian, he may attempt to access the remaining value or settle the insurer’s fraud claim.”

“Can he?”

“Not now. The accounts are frozen.”

“Then why is he still running?”

“Because the fraud charges could send him to prison.”

Detective Hale joined them through a secure video call.

He had traced Ryan’s financial activity.

Ryan owed more than two million dollars to private lenders.

Laura’s company was a shell business.

Diane’s home had been used as collateral without the bank’s knowledge.

Every part of Ryan’s life was built on borrowed money and forged signatures.

“He’s desperate,” Hale said. “Desperate people become unpredictable.”

Megan’s bank card had been used at a gas station outside Clarksville.

Security footage showed her entering alone.

She slipped a note to the cashier.

The note contained two words.

RIVER CABIN.

Ryan’s family once owned a fishing cabin near the Cumberland River.

Police surrounded it before sunset.

They found Megan locked inside a bedroom.

Ryan was gone.

He had left less than an hour earlier.

Megan was frightened but physically unharmed.

She told police Ryan had forced her to record a statement claiming Emily created the entire conspiracy.

When she refused, he threatened to expose Megan’s role in the forged insurance paperwork.

She admitted helping Ryan notarize a document years earlier.

She believed it was a legitimate correction.

Later, she learned it was false.

Ryan used her guilt to control her.

“Where is he going?” Hale asked.

“I don’t know,” Megan said.

“Did he mention Emily or the children?”

Megan hesitated.

“He said mothers always return to the place where they first felt safe.”

When Hale repeated the statement to Emily, she knew what it meant.

Her father’s lake house.

It had been empty since his death.

Emily had spent summers there as a child.

Ryan knew she sometimes went there when she needed to think.

But she had not taken the girls there.

Why would he go?

Then Natalie found Ellie’s stuffed rabbit outside the farmhouse gate.

Emily had left the original tracker with police as evidence.

This was a different rabbit.

It looked almost identical.

A phone had been sewn inside it.

The device rang.

Hale instructed Emily to answer while officers traced the signal.

Ryan’s voice filled the kitchen.

“You moved quickly.”

“Where are you?”

“You know.”

“The lake house?”

“Come alone.”

“No.”

“Then people will keep seeing the version of you I created.”

“I don’t care what strangers think.”

“You care what Chloe thinks.”

Emily’s hand tightened.

“Stay away from her.”

“She still wants to know whether I ever loved her.”

Chloe stood in the doorway.

Her face went pale when she heard him.

Emily moved into another room.

“What do you want?”

“The original trust agreement and a signed statement saying you fabricated the recordings.”

“You know I won’t do that.”

“Then I send the rest.”

“The rest of what?”

Ryan laughed quietly.

“Ask Chloe about the night she pushed Ellie down the stairs.”

Emily froze.

Ellie had fallen down three carpeted steps eight months earlier.

Ryan said he had witnessed the accident.

Chloe insisted she had been upstairs.

Emily believed both children had been playing near the landing.

Ellie was not seriously injured.

Ryan later dismissed it as an accident.

Now he was threatening to twist it into something else.

“You recorded it,” Emily said.

“I record everything.”

“Did Chloe push her?”

“Truth is whatever survives editing.”

The call ended.

Detective Hale had traced it.

The phone was near the lake house.

Police prepared to enter.

Emily was ordered to remain at Natalie’s home.

Two hours passed.

Then three.

At midnight, Hale called.

The lake house was empty.

Inside, officers found editing equipment, copies of forged records and hundreds of surveillance files.

They also found the unedited video of Ellie’s fall.

Ryan had been standing behind the toddler.

He nudged a toy beneath her foot.

Ellie slipped.

Chloe was nowhere near her.

Ryan had caused the fall himself.

It was another manufactured incident.

He had endangered Ellie months before throwing the plate.

The discovery shattered the last piece of denial Emily carried.

Ryan was not a father who had made one terrible mistake.

He had repeatedly hurt his child to create evidence.

The next morning, the court suspended all visitation.

A statewide alert was issued for Ryan.

Diane was charged with attempted custodial interference and conspiracy.

Laura agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.

Ryan’s lies were collapsing.

But Ryan was still free.

At noon, Chloe went outside with Natalie to feed the horses.

A delivery truck stopped at the gate.

The driver placed a box beside the mailbox and left.

Deputies inspected it before bringing it inside.

The package contained a tablet.

One video waited on the screen.

Ryan sat in a dark room.

Behind him was a wall Emily recognized.

It belonged to the basement of the family home.

The house had been sealed during the investigation.

No one was supposed to be inside.

Ryan looked directly at the camera.

“You took my family,” he said. “So I’m going to show everyone what your daughter did.”

The video changed.

It showed Chloe standing beside Ellie’s crib months earlier.

Chloe lifted a pillow.

The clip ended before she moved.

A title appeared.

CHLOE TRIED TO HURT HER SISTER.

Emily knew it was false.

Still, the image was horrifying.

Then Chloe screamed from the hallway.

Emily ran to her.

Chloe held her own tablet with both hands.

The edited video had already been posted online.

And beneath it, thousands of strangers were calling her a monster.
