Chapter 7

Sarah read Claire’s message twice.
“How can Leo’s blood prove Miles is Richard’s son?”
Margaret looked toward the sleeping baby.
“Claire believed Richard used Miles as a secret donor.”
“For what?”
“Richard had leukemia twelve years ago. Publicly, an anonymous donor saved him. Claire discovered hospital records suggesting the donor was a close relative.”
“Miles.”
“If DNA proves the match, it connects him directly to Richard.”
“That proves a family relationship, not murder.”
“No. But it destroys the lie that Miles was a random witness in Lily’s crash.”
Sarah gripped the steering wheel.
“And you kept this hidden?”
“Claire begged me to protect Ethan until she had complete proof.”
“She died.”
“I know.”
“You still said nothing.”
Margaret’s voice cracked.
“Richard told me Ethan would be charged with financial crimes if I exposed him. He showed me documents with Ethan’s signature.”
“Were they real?”
“Some were. Ethan signed papers without knowing what they contained.”
“So you protected your son and left Lily’s killer free.”
“Yes.”
The admission filled the truck with silence.
Margaret did not defend herself.
That made Sarah’s anger harder to hold.
“Why bring Leo?” Sarah asked.
“Miles has watched this family for years. He knows Richard values bloodline above everything. If Miles believes Leo can expose the secret, he may hesitate.”
“Or he may kill him.”
“I did not say it was a good plan.”
Sarah almost laughed.
It came out as a sob.
Headlights appeared behind them.
A dark sedan gained quickly.
Ethan was driving.
He pulled alongside the truck and signaled Sarah to stop.
She did.
He jumped out before the vehicles had fully stopped.
When he saw Leo, his fury turned white-hot.
“Mother!”
“I can explain.”
“You put him in a truck headed toward an armed murderer!”
“I knew you would follow.”
“That doesn’t make it sane.”
Sarah stepped between them.
“Argue later. We have twenty minutes.”
Ethan wanted to call Agent Brooks.
Miles had warned against police, but Brooks was already tracking the phone signal from a distance.
Sarah agreed to wear a hidden transmitter.
They left Leo with Ethan and Margaret two miles from the bridge.
“You are not going alone,” Ethan said.
“If Miles sees you, he may push Noah over.”
“And if you walk onto that bridge, I may never see you again.”
Sarah looked at him.
Rain began to fall.
“I need you to stay with Leo.”
“You always ask me to stay behind while you risk everything.”
“Because you’re his father.”
“And because you think your life matters less.”
She had no answer.
He touched her cheek.
“It doesn’t.”
Sarah placed her hand over his.
“For four years, I woke every morning wondering what Lily would think of me. Tonight I can save a child from the man who killed her.”
“Then come back.”
“I’ll try.”
“Promise me.”
“I won’t make a promise I may not keep.”
His eyes filled.
Sarah kissed him.
It was not planned.
It was brief, desperate, and full of everything neither of them had said.
When she stepped back, Ethan looked stunned.
“So now you have to come back,” he whispered.
Sarah walked toward the bridge.
Miles’s van waited near the center.
The river moved black beneath the steel rails.
Noah sat inside the open rear doors with tape across his mouth.
Miles stood beside him holding a gun.
“You came.”
“Let the boy go.”
“First, the photograph.”
Sarah held up Claire’s envelope.
Miles’s face tightened.
“So Margaret finally opened it.”
“Richard never claimed you.”
“He protected me.”
“He used you.”
“You know nothing about my father.”
“He ordered you to kill Lily.”
Miles raised the gun.
“You shouldn’t say her name.”
“She loved you.”
“She betrayed me.”
“She found out what you were.”
“I tried to warn her.”
“You shot her.”
Pain crossed his face.
For the first time, Sarah saw the young man Lily once loved.
Then it vanished.
“She chose Claire over me,” he said.
“She chose the truth.”
“And what has the truth done for any of you?”
He gestured toward the river.
“Lily is dead. Claire is dead. Ethan lost everything. You are hunted. Richard still controls people from a cell.”
“Not forever.”
Miles laughed.
“You think the files matter? Half the judges in this state attended his parties.”
Sarah stepped closer.
“You’re his son. Yet he kept you hidden.”
“To protect me.”
“He put you in danger while Victoria lived in mansions.”
“Victoria is legitimate.”
“And you were useful.”
His hand shook.
Sarah saw she had found the wound.
“Richard ordered Phase Two,” she continued. “He sent you to take a child. If this fails, who goes to prison? Not him. You.”
“Stop.”
“He will deny you.”
“Stop.”
“He already abandoned Olivia.”
Miles struck Sarah across the face.
She fell against the guardrail.
Ethan’s voice exploded in her hidden earpiece.
“Sarah!”
Miles heard it.
He ripped the transmitter from her collar.
“You lied.”
He dragged Noah to the edge of the van.
The chair’s rear legs hung over the bridge.
Sarah stood slowly.
“If you push him, Richard wins.”
Miles pressed the gun against the boy’s head.
“My father always wins.”
“No. He survives by making his children lose for him.”
Headlights appeared at the far end of the bridge.
Ethan’s sedan approached.
“Stay back!” Miles shouted.
The car stopped.
Ethan stepped out holding Leo.
Sarah’s heart seized.
Margaret stood several yards behind him.
“Put the baby down!” Miles yelled.
Ethan held Leo close.
“You’re my uncle.”
The words stunned everyone.
Miles lowered the gun slightly.
Ethan continued.
“My mother told me. Richard is your father.”
“He was more of a father than yours ever was.”
“My father raised me. Richard hid you.”
“He gave me purpose.”
“He gave you crimes.”
Ethan walked closer.
“You held Leo the day he was born.”
Miles looked at the baby.
“I was there.”
“Did you help kill Claire?”
Miles’s jaw tightened.
“Victoria handled the hospital.”
“You knew.”
“I didn’t know until later.”
“And you did nothing.”
“What could I do?”
“You could have protected him.”
Ethan lifted Leo slightly.
“You’re his family.”
Miles stared at the baby.
Noah began struggling against the tape.
Sarah moved one inch closer.
Miles noticed.
He raised the weapon again.
“Stay where you are.”
A truck engine roared behind Sarah.
A black SUV entered the bridge from the opposite direction.
Richard Vale sat in the passenger seat.
He had escaped federal transport less than an hour earlier.
Detective Porter drove.
Porter had also escaped with help from a corrupted guard.
The SUV stopped near the van.
Richard stepped out with a rifle.
“You disappoint me, son,” he said.
Miles’s face changed.
Not with fear.
With the desperate need for approval.
“I have the woman.”
“You let Ethan approach.”
“I can handle it.”
“You never could.”
Richard aimed at Sarah.
Miles moved into the line of fire.
“Wait.”
Richard did not.
He fired.
Miles jerked backward.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Sarah lunged for Noah.
Porter fired from the SUV.
Ethan dropped behind his car, shielding Leo.
Margaret crawled toward the roadside barrier.
Federal vehicles appeared in the distance.
Brooks had ignored Miles’s warning.
Richard grabbed the photograph from Sarah and ran toward the SUV.
Miles, bleeding heavily, seized Richard’s ankle.
His father fell.
“You shot me,” Miles whispered.
Richard kicked him in the wound.
“You failed me.”
Something inside Miles finally broke.
He pulled Richard toward the bridge rail.
Richard struck him with the rifle.
They struggled.
Porter aimed at Sarah.
Margaret rose behind him and smashed her cane across his wrist.
The gun fell.
Porter turned on her.
Before he could attack, Ethan tackled him.
Sarah untied Noah.
The boy ran toward Olivia, who had arrived with the federal team.
Richard climbed over the rail, trying to escape onto a maintenance platform.
Miles followed.
“Help me,” Richard ordered.
Miles looked at the hand his father extended.
All his life, he had waited for that hand.
Now he saw what it really offered.
Another command.
Another betrayal.
Miles removed a small recorder from his pocket and threw it toward Sarah.
“Everything is on there.”
Richard’s face twisted.
“You worthless mistake.”
He raised the rifle.
Miles shoved him.
Richard fell onto the maintenance platform below.
Agents surrounded him before he could move.
Miles collapsed near the rail.
Sarah pressed her hands against his wound.
“Why did you help us?”
He looked toward Noah, who was crying in his mother’s arms.
“I remembered Lily.”
His voice weakened.
“She used to say children shouldn’t pay for their parents’ sins.”
“Where is the rest of the evidence?”
“Recorder.”
“What’s on it?”
“Richard ordering Claire’s death. Victoria asking me to burn the house. Porter admitting he killed Lily.”
Sarah fought tears.
“Stay awake.”
Miles smiled faintly.
“She told me to leave with her.”
“Who?”
“Lily. That night. She said we could expose Richard together.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I wanted my father to love me.”
His eyes closed.
Miles died before the ambulance arrived.
The federal agents arrested Porter and took Richard back into custody.
Noah survived.
Leo slept through the final gunshots.
At sunrise, Sarah stood beside the river.
Ethan joined her.
“He gave us enough evidence,” he said.
“It cost him everything.”
“He made that choice years ago.”
“So did Margaret.”
“So did I.”
Sarah looked at him.
“What choice did you make?”
“To ignore what I didn’t want to see.”
He took her hand.
“I won’t do that again.”
Before she could answer, Agent Brooks approached.
“We have a problem.”
She held up the recorder.
“The files are encrypted.”
“Can you open them?” Sarah asked.
“We’re trying.”
Brooks looked toward Ethan.
“Victoria’s attorneys have scheduled an emergency hearing. They want her released before the pregnancy becomes high-risk.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
“And if the files remain locked?”
“We have the videos and Claire’s journal, but the defense is challenging both. Dr. Cross has withdrawn her cooperation.”
“Why?” Ethan asked.
“Someone threatened her daughter.”
Sarah looked toward the sunrise.
Richard was in custody.
Porter was in custody.
Miles was dead.
Yet the Vale machine continued to move.
“What about the paternity claim?” she asked.
Brooks’s expression darkened.
“The first test says Ethan is not Leo’s biological father.”
Ethan went still.
Sarah squeezed his hand.
Brooks continued carefully.
“The laboratory may have been compromised. We ordered a second test.”
Ethan looked toward the car where Margaret held Leo.
“If the result is real, it changes nothing.”
But the pain in his voice said it changed something.
Sarah faced him.
“You are his father.”
“I know.”
“Biology cannot erase every night you held him.”
“I know.”
Brooks’s phone rang.
She listened, then looked at them.
“The second result is in.”
Ethan did not breathe.
“Leo is your biological son,” Brooks said. “But Victoria’s pregnancy test revealed something else.”
“What?”
“She isn’t pregnant.”
Sarah expected relief.
Instead, Brooks handed Ethan a medical report.
Victoria had forged the pregnancy to gain sympathy.
But blood collected during the examination matched DNA recovered from an unidentified woman buried near Cabin Four.
A woman who was not Lily.
The match showed they were sisters.
Victoria had another sister.
May you like
And according to recovered records, that sister had worked inside the Walker home under a false name.
Her name was Mia.
