Amazed

Chapter 1

The woman who owned the mansion grabbed a pair of scissors and cut off my hair because she thought her husband was looking at me too long. She had no idea the house she ruled had never truly belonged to her.

My name is Grace Miller, and at twenty-three, I worked as a live-in maid at the Caldwell estate outside Boston.

Mrs. Caldwell had disliked me from my first week there.

“You’re here to clean,” Vanessa told me. “Not to be noticed.”

I kept my eyes down because I needed the job.

My mother had died when I was little, and I had grown up moving between relatives and foster homes with almost nothing except an old silver necklace she left me.

Then one Saturday, Vanessa hosted a charity luncheon at the mansion.

Her husband, Richard, asked me to bring coffee into the sitting room.

When I entered, one of the older guests stared at me.

“My goodness,” she whispered. “She looks exactly like Eleanor.”

Vanessa immediately turned toward me.

“Who?”

The woman quickly changed the subject.

But Vanessa watched me for the rest of the afternoon.

Later, Richard found me cleaning spilled wine from the hallway.

“Your hair looks nice today, Grace.”

That was all he said.

Vanessa heard him.

An hour later, she ordered me upstairs.

The moment I entered her dressing room, she locked the door.

“You enjoy this, don’t you?”

“I don’t understand.”

“You enjoy men staring at you.”

Before I could move, she grabbed my hair from behind.

“Mrs. Caldwell, please.”

Then I heard the scissors.

One thick section of my hair fell onto the marble floor.

I screamed and tried to pull away.

Vanessa cut another piece.

“Maybe now you’ll remember what you are.”

When she finally released me, I was shaking.

Richard rushed upstairs after hearing the noise.

“What the hell did you do?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I corrected a problem.”

I reached for my necklace, fighting tears.

But the broken chain slipped from my fingers and landed beside the hair on the floor.

Richard stared at the small silver pendant.

His face changed.

He bent down slowly and picked it up.

“Where did you get this?”

“My mother gave it to me.”

His hands began trembling.

Vanessa suddenly looked nervous.

Richard opened the pendant and saw the tiny initials engraved inside.

Then he stumbled backward and whispered, “This belonged to my sister.”

Before I could ask what he meant, the mansion’s elderly groundskeeper appeared in the doorway.

He looked at me, then at the necklace, and his face went completely white.

“Mr. Caldwell,” he said, “call your father immediately.”

Vanessa snapped, “Why?”

The old man pointed at me.

“Because that girl isn’t your maid.”

May you like

He swallowed hard.

“She’s Eleanor Caldwell’s missing daughter—and if that’s true, this entire estate belongs to her.”
