Chapter 5

I stepped between Madeline and my father.
“Put the gun down.”
Her hand trembled.
“Move.”
“I’m Emily.”
“I know who you are.”
“We’re sisters.”
Her eyes filled with anger.
“Do not call me that.”
My father spoke behind me.
“Madeline, I did not know Elizabeth was pregnant.”
“My mother wrote to you.”
“I never received the letters.”
“She waited for twelve years.”
“I would have come.”
“You chose Catherine.”
“I loved Catherine.”
“And then you let her disappear too.”
Madeline pressed the gun harder against my chest.
I tried to control my breathing.
“Ryan told you my father abandoned you.”
“He did abandon me.”
“Ryan lies.”
“I learned that before you did.”
“Then help us stop him.”
Madeline laughed bitterly.
“You think Ryan is the worst person in this story?”
“Where is my mother?”
She looked at Charles.
“Tell her.”
My father shook his head.
“Madeline, please.”
“Tell your perfect daughter what Catherine did.”
I turned toward him.
“What is she talking about?”
My father’s face went pale.
Madeline answered for him.
“Catherine helped hide me after I discovered Ryan’s stolen accounts.”
“That isn’t possible.”
“She arranged the apartment. She gave me a new name. She promised it would only be for a few months.”
“Why?”
“Because Ryan had found her location. He offered her a deal.”
My stomach tightened.
“What deal?”
“He would keep her identity secret if she helped him recover the financial records I took.”
My mother had sacrificed Madeline to protect herself.
“No,” my father whispered.
Madeline looked at him.
“You have spent twenty years imagining Catherine as a prisoner. She made choices.”
“Where is she now?”
“With the people who helped Ryan escape.”
“Who?”
Madeline lowered the gun slightly.
Before she could answer, a shot broke the motel window.
The bullet struck the wall.
Police dragged us to the floor.
Madeline crawled behind the bed.
More shots came from the parking lot.
Officers returned fire.
A dark truck raced away.
“Was that Ryan’s people?” I asked.
Madeline shook her head.
“It was Catherine’s.”
I stared at her.
“My mother has armed people?”
“She runs the network now.”
My father looked devastated.
“What network?”
“The one Richard helped build.”
Madeline explained while officers secured the motel.
After Uncle Richard died, his criminal partners needed someone who understood the foundation accounts.
Catherine knew every number.
At first, she worked for them to survive.
Then she took control.
She built new companies.
Changed names.
Moved money.
Ryan discovered the network after stealing Madeline’s records.
He threatened to expose Catherine unless she helped him.
“Why did she protect him?” I asked.
“Because he knew where the money went.”
“Did Ryan know he was Richard’s son?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Since he was nineteen.”
Ryan had lied to Margaret too.
He had always known who I was.
He targeted me from the beginning.
“What happened the night you disappeared?” I asked Madeline.
“I found transfers from my company to one of Catherine’s accounts. Ryan walked in while I was copying them.”
“Did he attack you?”
“He tried to take the drive. I hit him with a lamp and ran.”
“Why didn’t you go to police?”
“A detective stopped me before I reached the station. He worked for Catherine.”
“You spoke to Ryan last week.”
“He found me again.”
“Lily heard you tell him not to hurt me.”
Madeline’s face softened for the first time.
“I had been monitoring his calls. When I saw what he was doing to you, I warned him.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“I tried.”
She removed an envelope from her coat.
It contained letters addressed to me.
They had all been returned.
Ryan controlled our mail.
He had changed my phone number twice.
He screened my email.
I remembered how reasonable his explanations had sounded.
Too many scam calls.
Missing packages.
Security concerns.
It had all been designed to keep me unreachable.
“Where is Catherine?” my father asked.
Madeline looked toward the shattered window.
“She was here an hour ago.”
“Did she shoot at us?”
“No. That was a man named Vincent Hale.”
Marcus reacted.
“Hale worked for Richard.”
“He works for Ryan now,” Madeline said.
Ryan had promised Vincent access to the original foundation accounts.
Those records could expose judges, officers, politicians, and business owners.
“Why would Ryan want that?” I asked.
“To control them.”
My husband had not simply wanted money.
He wanted the power my father possessed.
And he had used our marriage to get close enough to steal it.
My phone rang.
It was the secure number assigned to James.
He was guarding Lily.
I answered quickly.
“Is she safe?”
No one spoke.
Then Lily’s voice came through.
“Mommy?”
“Lily, where are you?”
“I’m with Grandma.”
My entire body went cold.
“Grandma Margaret?”
“No. Your mommy.”
Catherine had taken my daughter.
“Put her on the phone.”
A woman spoke.
Her voice was older than I remembered.
But I knew it instantly.
“Hello, Emily.”
Twenty years of anger disappeared beneath one word.
“Mom?”
“I’m sorry our reunion has to happen this way.”
“Where is Lily?”
“She is safe.”
“Let me speak to her again.”
“In a moment.”
“What do you want?”
“The drive Madeline took.”
I looked at my sister.
She shook her head.
“I don’t have it,” Madeline whispered.
My mother heard her.
“Yes, you do.”
“If you hurt Lily—”
“I would never hurt my granddaughter.”
“You took her from armed guards.”
“Your guards were not as loyal as Charles believed.”
My father took the phone.
“Catherine.”
A long silence followed.
“Hello, Charles.”
“Bring Lily back.”
“Give me Madeline and the drive.”
“She is your daughter.”
I looked at my father.
Madeline looked at him too.
Catherine laughed.
“You still haven’t told them.”
“Told us what?” I demanded.
My father closed his eyes.
Catherine answered.
“Madeline is not Charles’s daughter.”
The room went silent.
“Elizabeth lied to him,” Catherine continued. “Madeline’s father was Richard.”
Madeline stared at my father.
“That’s not true.”
“It is,” Catherine said. “Which means Ryan did not choose you by accident. He chose his own half sister first.”
Madeline’s face collapsed.
Ryan had been engaged to his sister.
Then he married his cousin.
Every relationship had been built on secrets from the same broken family.
“Where do we meet?” I asked.
“Bring Madeline to the old Whitmore estate at noon.”
“That house burned down years ago.”
“Not all of it.”
“And Lily?”
“You will see her when I have the drive.”
The call ended.
I turned toward Madeline.
“Do you have it?”
She reached beneath her coat and removed a small metal key.
“Not the drive.”
“What does the key open?”
“A safe-deposit box.”
“What is inside?”
“Enough evidence to send Catherine, Ryan, Margaret, and half their network to prison.”
My father looked at the clock.
We had three hours.
Then Marcus received a call from the hospital.
The officer guarding Ryan had been found unconscious.
Ryan’s bed was empty.
He had escaped again.
And security footage showed him leaving with James Carter.

My father’s most trusted man.
The same man who had been protecting Lily.
