Amazed

Chapter 4

Richard felt the ground shift beneath him.

“Daniel’s wife?”

Nora nodded weakly.

“They married seven years ago. Secretly.”

The paramedics tried to move her.

Richard stayed beside the stretcher.

“Why would she become engaged to me?”

“To enter your home. To control Sophie. To finish what they started with Emily.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Where is Daniel?”

Nora’s eyes filled with fear.

“Closer than you think.”

Her heart monitor began beeping rapidly.

The paramedics pushed Richard away and loaded her into the ambulance.

Sophie watched from Eleanor’s car.

Richard forced himself to walk calmly toward her.

He could not allow the child to hear more.

Nora was taken into emergency surgery.

Richard moved Sophie to a secure hospital suite with Eleanor.

Then he and Maya drove to Sterling Federal.

The bank manager took them below ground.

Box 418 waited inside a private room.

Eleanor inserted the brass key.

The lock clicked.

Richard lifted the lid.

The box contained a flash drive, a sealed letter, a photograph, and an old phone.

The photograph showed Emily standing beside Daniel.

The date printed on the back was six days before her death.

Richard unfolded the letter.

My dearest Richard,

If you are reading this, I failed to stop them.

Daniel has returned under another name, and he is not working alone. Graham is helping him move money through the company. A woman named Victoria Vale is pretending to be his business partner, but I believe they are married.

Victoria.

Vanessa’s legal name.

Richard continued reading.

They want control of the voting trust. They cannot obtain it while you and Sophie are alive. If anything happens to me, do not accept the official explanation. Protect our daughter, even if the truth makes you question me.

Richard’s throat tightened.

“What truth?”

Eleanor pointed to the old phone.

It still held a charge after being connected to a portable battery.

There was one video.

Emily appeared on the screen.

She sat in a parked car.

Her face was pale.

“Richard, I hope you never see this,” she began. “But if you do, Daniel has found us.”

The image shook.

“I met him because he claimed he wanted peace. He said your father had stolen his inheritance. I told him I would help him legally. Then he showed me records of crimes committed through Sterling Global.”

Richard looked at Eleanor.

“What crimes?”

She shook her head.

Emily continued.

“The documents carry your signatures, Richard, but I know you did not sign them. Daniel is preparing to frame you. He says he can destroy the company and take Sophie unless I give him access to the trust.”

A car moved behind Emily.

She glanced into the mirror.

“I am being followed.”

Richard gripped the table.

“Drive away,” he whispered to a woman who had been dead for four years.

Emily’s voice broke.

“There is something else. Daniel believes Sophie is his daughter.”

The screen seemed to go dark around Richard.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Emily wiped tears from her face.

“He is wrong. Before you and I married, I dated him briefly. I did not know he was your brother because he used another name. It ended months before I met you. When he saw Sophie’s photograph, he decided she belonged to him.”

Richard could barely process the words.

Emily had known Daniel before him.

His brother had used a false identity.

Emily continued.

“I had a DNA test performed. Sophie is yours. The proof is on the flash drive. Daniel rejected it. He said the truth did not matter if he could make the court believe his version.”

She looked behind her again.

Headlights approached.

“If I do not return, trust your mother. Trust Nora. Do not trust Graham.”

The video ended abruptly.

Richard sat in silence.

His grief had always been a wound.

Now someone had torn it open and filled it with poison.

Eleanor placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Emily loved you.”

“You knew she had dated Daniel?”

“No.”

“She told you about the box.”

“She did not tell me what it contained.”

Richard stood.

“Daniel believes Sophie is his.”

“He does not believe it,” Maya said. “He is using the claim.”

Richard looked at the flash drive.

It contained the DNA report and records of illegal transfers.

The transfers led to Vale Strategic Services.

Vanessa and Daniel had stolen more than eighty million dollars.

They had used Richard’s electronic signature.

Maya copied the files.

“This is enough for warrants.”

“Then arrest them.”

“We have to find them first.”

Richard stared at Emily’s frozen image on the phone.

“Daniel will come for the box.”

Maya understood immediately.

“You want to use it as bait.”

“I want him away from Sophie.”

Eleanor objected.

“You are not trained for this.”

“Neither was Emily.”

The words silenced her.

Richard called a special board meeting for that afternoon.

He announced that Emily’s safe-deposit box contained nothing useful.

He knew Graham or another traitor would relay the message.

Then he ordered his company’s security director to prepare for a charity gala scheduled that night.

The gala would bring hundreds of witnesses and dozens of cameras to the Sterling Hotel.

Richard planned to announce major changes to Sophie’s trust.

Daniel would not ignore it.

Sophie remained with Eleanor and Nora under police protection.

Nora woke after surgery.

Richard sat beside her.

“Why didn’t you call me sooner?”

“I tried.”

“I would have come home.”

“Graham intercepted everything. Vanessa replaced staff members one at a time. She monitored Sophie’s tablet and your calls.”

Richard looked at Sophie sleeping on a couch nearby.

“How long was the abuse happening?”

“Vanessa began with small punishments. Taking toys. Withholding dessert. Telling Sophie you preferred being away.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Then she fired me. I came back through the garden two nights later and saw Sophie locked in the pantry.”

“Why didn’t you call police?”

“I did. An officer came, spoke to Vanessa, and left.”

Maya looked up from her notebook.

“Name?”

“Sergeant Paul Denton.”

Maya’s face hardened.

Denton worked in evidence control.

He had handled the corrupted memory card.

The conspiracy inside the police department now had a name.

Nora continued.

“I took Sophie to the playhouse and gave her the envelope. Before I could leave, Daniel caught me.”

“Did he cause Emily’s crash?”

“Yes.”

Richard went still.

“He told me himself. He forced her car toward the edge while Vanessa followed in a second vehicle.”

“Why would he confess to you?”

“He expected me to die.”

Nora reached beneath her blanket.

“I stole this from him.”

She handed Maya a small recording device.

Daniel’s voice was stored on it.

He spoke about Emily’s crash.

He described replacing the damaged brake line before investigators arrived.

He named Sergeant Denton.

Richard felt no satisfaction.

Proof did not bring Emily back.

But it could stop them from taking Sophie.

At the gala, Richard entered alone.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted questions about Vanessa.

He said nothing until he reached the stage.

“My family has been attacked by people who believed money could bury truth,” he announced. “Tonight, I am transferring control of my company shares into a protected trust for my daughter.”

Board members exchanged worried looks.

Richard continued.

“The trust cannot be changed through marriage, guardianship, or my death.”

That was not yet legally true.

Helen was still completing the papers.

But Daniel did not know that.

Richard left the ballroom after the speech.

A message appeared on his phone.

Come to Suite 1904 alone, or the hotel burns.

He informed Maya through an encrypted earpiece.

Then he entered the elevator.

Suite 1904 was dark.

Vanessa stood near the window.

She wore a black dress.

The bruise on her cheek had been covered with makeup.

“You look beautiful,” Richard said coldly.

“You used to mean that.”

“You used to hide your cruelty.”

Vanessa smiled.

“I hid many things.”

“Where is Daniel?”

“Watching.”

Richard placed the safe-deposit box on a table.

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward it.

“You said it was empty.”

“I lied.”

She raised a pistol.

“Open it.”

Richard lifted the lid.

Only copies lay inside.

Vanessa examined Emily’s letter.

Her hand began to shake.

“She always thought she was smarter than me.”

“She was.”

Vanessa struck him with the pistol.

Richard fell against the table.

“You were supposed to marry me,” she hissed. “Then you came home early.”

“You made my daughter eat from a dog bowl.”

“She would have forgotten.”

“I never will.”

The suite door opened.

Daniel entered.

Richard had not seen his brother in eight years.

Daniel’s hair had turned gray at the temples.

His eyes had not changed.

They carried the same resentment Richard remembered from childhood.

“Hello, brother.”

Police alarms sounded below.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

Smoke rose beyond the window.

Guests began screaming in the ballroom.

Daniel smiled.

“That would be my insurance.”

Richard heard Sophie’s voice through his earpiece.

“Daddy?”

His blood froze.

She was supposed to be at the hospital.

Then Daniel held up a tablet.

The screen showed Eleanor’s hospital suite.

A masked man stood behind Sophie.

Daniel pointed his gun at Richard.

“Give me the real evidence.”

Richard stared at his daughter on the screen.

May you like

Daniel’s smile widened.

“Or Sophie learns which father was willing to let her die.”
