Chapter 6

Richard stared at Vanessa.
“My mother ordered Emily’s death?”
Vanessa pressed herself against the grave, shaking.
“I didn’t say that.”
“You told me to ask her.”
“Because Eleanor knows who did.”
Police searched the trees.
The shooter was gone.
Maya placed Vanessa in handcuffs.
“You’re under arrest for kidnapping, child abuse, conspiracy, and attempted murder.”
Vanessa began to laugh.
“You think a cell can protect me?”
“It can keep you away from Sophie.”
Vanessa looked at Richard.
“Daniel has copies of everything. If I disappear, he releases them.”
“Copies of what?”
“Sterling Global paid for illegal weapons shipments. Judges, officers, and politicians accepted money from your company.”
“I knew nothing about that.”
“Neither did Emily until she found the accounts.”
Richard glanced at Eleanor’s vehicle.
His mother sat inside with an officer.
“Who authorized the transfers?”
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the car.
“Charles Sterling.”
Richard’s father.
“That’s impossible. He died twelve years ago.”
“The network did not die with him.”
“Who controls it now?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Ask Eleanor.”
At the hospital, Richard confronted his mother.
Sophie slept in the next room.
Nora stayed beside her.
Richard placed the photographs of the illegal transfers on Eleanor’s table.
“Did Father use Sterling Global to move weapons?”
Eleanor did not answer immediately.
That was enough.
“How much did you know?”
“Your father began during the final years of the Cold War.”
“You mean he smuggled weapons.”
“He believed he was helping people who could not receive official support.”
“And later?”
“The operation changed. Other men took control.”
“Did you help him?”
“I protected the company from the consequences.”
Richard stared at her.
“Emily discovered it.”
“Yes.”
“Did you threaten her?”
“No.”
“Did you order Daniel to stop her?”
Eleanor rose despite her injured arm.
“I loved Emily.”
“That is not an answer.”
“I did not kill your wife.”
“Who did?”
Eleanor walked to the window.
“Your father’s closest partner was Malcolm Vale.”
Vanessa’s father.
“Malcolm continued the network after Charles died. He used Daniel because Daniel hated you.”
“Why did Daniel marry Vanessa?”
“To unite his claim to Sterling Global with Malcolm’s money and connections.”
Richard thought of the corrupted evidence and forged court records.
Malcolm Vale had spent decades buying influence.
“Emily found proof against Malcolm.”
“She planned to give it to federal authorities.”
“So Malcolm ordered Daniel to stop her.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Daniel forced Emily’s car from the road. Vanessa followed. Malcolm arranged the official report.”
Richard’s hands curled into fists.
“You knew all of this.”
“I learned it after the funeral.”
“And said nothing.”
“Malcolm sent me a photograph of Sophie sleeping in her crib.”
Richard’s anger faltered.
“He threatened her?”
“He said if I went to police, Sophie would join her mother.”
Eleanor turned.
“For four years, I collected evidence quietly. Every cold word I spoke to you was designed to push you away from me. I wanted Malcolm to believe our family was divided.”
“You let me become engaged to his daughter.”
“I did not know Vanessa was Victoria Vale until six months ago. By then she was inside your house, and every move I made was watched.”
“You could have told me.”
“You were in love with her.”
“I would have believed you.”
“Would you?”
Richard remembered every warning he had dismissed.
He could not answer.
Eleanor opened a locked drawer and removed a thick file.
“These are the records I collected.”
Bank transfers.
Flight logs.
Names.
Photographs.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Judge Patricia Monroe.
The judge who removed Sophie from Richard’s custody had received money through a Vale foundation.
Another name was Sergeant Denton.
A third was a member of Sterling Global’s board.
There were dozens more.
Richard turned the pages.
“This can destroy the company.”
“It can also free it.”
“Why keep the evidence here?”
“I was waiting until Sophie’s protective trust became permanent.”
“That happens on her seventh birthday.”
“In twelve days.”
Richard understood the timing.
Vanessa had planned to marry him before the birthday.
If Richard became incapacitated after the wedding, she could challenge Eleanor’s role and take guardianship.
Then she could control Sophie’s shares.
“Malcolm ordered Vanessa to marry me.”
“Yes.”
“But Vanessa planned to betray Daniel.”
“Malcolm taught his children loyalty only to power.”
Maya entered.
She had heard most of the conversation.
“We need this file.”
Eleanor handed it over.
“Make copies before you enter it into evidence.”
Maya nodded.
Denton’s corruption had taught them caution.
Vanessa was transferred to federal custody.
She offered testimony in exchange for protection.
Daniel remained missing.
Malcolm Vale appeared on television the next morning.
He stood outside Vale headquarters with attorneys surrounding him.
“My daughter was manipulated and assaulted by Richard Sterling,” he announced. “The claims against my family are a desperate attempt to hide decades of criminal activity within Sterling Global.”
Reporters shouted questions.
Malcolm continued.
“We have evidence that Richard Sterling knew about illegal financial transfers and ordered the death of his wife when she threatened to expose him.”
Richard watched from the hospital.
Sophie entered before he could turn off the television.
“Did you hurt Mommy?”
He crouched in front of her.
“No.”
“The man on TV said you did.”
“He is lying to protect himself.”
“Everybody keeps lying.”
“I know.”
“How do I know you aren’t lying too?”
Richard felt the distance others had created between them.
He did not blame her.
“Because I will show you the truth, even when it hurts.”
Sophie stared at him.
“Did Grandma know bad people hurt Mommy?”
“Yes.”
“Did she tell you?”
“No.”
“Then she lied too.”
Eleanor stood in the doorway.
Pain crossed her face.
“Yes,” she said. “I did.”
Sophie looked at her grandmother.
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Daddy says being afraid doesn’t make hurting people okay.”
“He is right.”
Eleanor knelt.
“I thought silence would protect you. Instead, it allowed bad people to enter your home. I am sorry.”
Sophie did not hug her.
But she did not walk away.
A federal task force raided Vale headquarters that afternoon.
They found empty offices.
Servers had been destroyed.
Malcolm had vanished.
His private plane had left the country the previous night.
Daniel released a video online.
He claimed Richard had stolen Sophie from him.
He showed photographs of himself with Emily.
He demanded an independent DNA test.
Public opinion turned quickly.
News channels discussed Sophie’s identity.
Strangers posted photographs of her.
Richard ordered his attorneys to remove them, but new posts appeared.
He wanted to reject the test.
Helen advised against it.
“If we refuse, Daniel will use the doubt forever.”
“Sophie should not have to prove who her father is.”
“No, but the result could protect her legally.”
Sophie overheard them.
“I’ll do it.”
Richard looked down.
“You don’t need to.”
“I want everyone to stop talking about me.”
The independent test was performed with strict supervision.
Results would take forty-eight hours.
Richard stayed at Eleanor’s estate with Sophie.
That night, the power failed.
Backup generators should have started immediately.
They did not.
Officers secured the halls.
Richard found Sophie hiding under her desk.
He lifted her.
“It’s only the lights.”
“No, it isn’t.”
She pointed through the window.
A line of fire moved across the lawn.
The dry grass ignited in several places.
Flames surrounded the estate.
“Evacuate!” an officer shouted.
Richard carried Sophie downstairs.
Smoke entered through the vents.
Eleanor opened a hidden door behind the library shelves.
“A tunnel leads to the old carriage house.”
They moved underground with Nora and two officers.
Halfway through the tunnel, an explosion shook the ceiling.
Dust fell around them.
Sophie screamed.
Richard covered her with his body.
The tunnel exit opened near the woods.
They emerged into darkness.
A helicopter hovered above the burning estate.
A rope dropped.
Masked men descended.
The officers fired.
Richard pulled Sophie behind a stone wall.
Eleanor stumbled.
Nora helped her.
A vehicle raced from the trees and stopped beside them.
The door opened.
Graham Cole sat behind the wheel.
“Get in!”
Richard did not trust him.
But armed men were closing in.
Graham shouted again.
“If Malcolm wanted me alive, I wouldn’t be here!”
Richard placed Sophie in the back seat.
The others climbed in.
Bullets struck the vehicle as Graham accelerated.
They escaped along a narrow service road.
“Where are you taking us?” Richard demanded.
“To a federal safe house.”
“How do you know its location?”
“I made a deal.”
Richard saw Graham’s eyes in the mirror.
“What did you give them?”
“Daniel.”
Graham handed him a phone.
A live location blinked on the map.
Daniel was moving toward the waterfront.
“He’s meeting Malcolm tonight,” Graham said.
“Why?”
“To trade Sophie’s forged DNA results for a way out of the country.”
Richard looked at him.
“Forged results?”
“The laboratory director belongs to Malcolm.”
Richard’s phone rang.
Helen’s voice shook.
“The test came back.”
May you like
Richard already knew what she would say.
“The report claims you are not Sophie’s father.”
